Is it tacky & predictable?

A plane has just been flying around our building with a banner on it saying, “WILL YOU MARRY ME SHERRY?” I personally think it’s a bit tacky and predictable given it’s valentines day and all!

What do you think, would you do this or would you choose something more original?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

predictable?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Sherry knew all along.

I am an absolutely sucker for tacky overblown gestures even though I pretend to hate them. Actually I probably DO hate them, if directed at me, but they're great if some other poor woman/man is publicly embarrassed.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I would never predict anyone hiring a plane to propose to me, Valentine's Day or no. I'd like it best if they were flying the plane themself.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

boring. It wouldn't even be original on any other day.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

My favourite ever public proposal is still the guy on Question Time that had said "My question actually isn't for the panel, it's for the lady sitting next to me..." and she looked so wonderfully shocked. She said yes though. Oh, just remembering that has brought a little tear to my eye.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Awwww! Most middle-class proposal ever?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Remember that Pepsi commercial with the skywriter, and the guy brings his girlfriend out to see it as it spells...
Skywriter: "Marry"
Sue: "Marry?"
SW: "me"
Sue: "huh?"
SW: "Sue"
Sue: "OH! (hugs)"

Dude should have recinded the offer, it took her so long to figure it out.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

A friend of mine had a row with his girlfriend once. She stormed off to get the bus home, and he then cycled alongside the bus calling up "Kathleen! I'm sorry! I love you" repeatedly. Everyone on the bus thought it was very sweet but were wondering which passenger was the object of his affections. Kathleen herself pretended to wonder too.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

the plane banner thing would be made much more interesting if a guy parachuted out bearing the engagement ring.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

that face is gold

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

maybe I'm reading too much into it, but these measures strike me as a desperate attempt to impress. I'm not sure if falling for it is more pathetic or equally pathetic.

Or maybe it's just really sweet, I don't know.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Aww, I just watched the QT clip again. What a sentimental old fool I am, but I find the whole thing so wonderfully touching.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

i would love it if a girl starts a mass riot with people holding up a banners saying "KEN MARRY " and they all break into jewellers and steal wedding rings for me to give the girl and then shout "WHO SHOULD MARRY " "KEN!!" "WHEN SHOULD THEY MARRY" "NOW!!"

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

i would never have predicted that riot.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Best face is the guy who looks a bit like Statto from Fantasy Football League hovering over the groom-to-be's shoulder.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Those public attempts are for people who are really insecure, I'd think.

"In private, she might have her doubts, but if I ask her before millions of people..."

Did anyone ever see a "No, I won't!" on such an occasion?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

StanM, will you marry me?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, all this would explain the "fuck off, you loser" hot air balloon I saw on my way to work this morning.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone ever see a "No, I won't!" on such an occasion?

Once on Trisha, the audience just laughed and the guy sulked.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Well, okay then. (xxpost)

(damn! it works! and I don't even know you in person! What if you're not a girl?)

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Is this plane literally flying around the building?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

That QT clip has made me ridiculously happy.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's metaphorically flying around the building.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Is this plane literally flying around the building?
yes, it's gone now. we looked up how much it'd be to hire one.

£250 + vat per hour. pffft! rippoff, text= 10p bargain.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

You all are living very fabulous lives if you can predict events like these occuring to you!!!!!!! Anyway I think it is charming.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I proposed on Christmas Eve and now I'm worrying it was almost as tacky and predictable as V Day :(

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

No way, Archel - cute and sweet, what with that Christmas Eve-y feeling everywhere - lovely.

Yes, the plane thing is charming and great! Cheesy, sure, hilarious, yes, but, hell, it's A PLANE FLYING AROUND JUST FOR YOU!! It even has your name on it! That's awesome. The best would be if there was some kind of sound system set up or someone just came up and gave you a megaphone and you had to answer through that. (haha, but only if the asker knew you'd say yes.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

If you were really organised/psychic you could arrange your own counter-plane to write your answer!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

my plane is on permanent standby :(

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's best to keep it simple. All these planes in the air asking 'will you marry them' is so energy inefficient. I'd get one of those remote control toy planes instead, but not being very good at the controls it'd probably fly straight into her face. The horror!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

With the magic of punctuation you could have made that one post [mod note: craig is referring to posts from deleted racist troll]

Hi, my name is Laurel -- have we met?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking some kind of mini fireworks display for the answer! I would keep it in my bag all the time, just in case. (hahaha, that reminds me of Arrested Development and Gob always having pennies in his sleeves and doves in his pants.) I guess we would just have to commute by bike for years to make up for the energy inefficiency of it all!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

With the magic of punctuation you could have made that one post

and how unromantic would THAT be?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Punctuation can be romantic, a rose for Ken C:

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking some kind of mini fireworks display for the answer!

cheap ass tip: take a hand-with-a-thumb-sticking-out-display. That way, you only need one. Thumb up/down only depends on the direction you're holding the launcher!

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

4 bottle rockets for Yes, 2 for No.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I love overblown romantic gestures, and I'm all for tackiness. Personally, I wouldn't propose in public though, because I think it's something you should do in private. I guess this one's a bit different though, since people don't know who rented the plane, and Sherry'll still have to give his answer in private. So yay!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't two lesbians have a massive break-up row via the medium of banners strung on a bridge over the Worthing bypass last year?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Someone proposed to me once, in public. I accepted too - only to find out xpost, she was talking to someone else.

OK, it was actually a post/reply on a messageboard about britpop, but I could see it happening.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've proposed on a messageboard too, here in fact.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

so did i

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

What was the answer?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

press pageup

Ah, silly me! Congrats to you two! Man-to-man marriage is now legal in the UK, innit?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

remember when the dude from sinister proposed to his girlf at the B&S gig in chicago? that was cute.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

aw yeah. bless the man

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, I was there.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

(It wasn't me, tho.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, I find this stuff rather charming, too. I cried in Walk the Line when Johnny proposed to June on-stage.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. Remember when that dude from Grand Rapids had Momus write a song for the fund-raising album, and he requested a proposal song for his girlfriend?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

No. It was on Stars Forever?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

You know, I think I only heard the "Minty Fresh" song from that, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

It was whenever you could commission a song per donation.

andy --, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

That's for a decanter, not a lady.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Haha. Make mine "RYE".

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Do you drink straight rye? It's getting harder to find.. I had an Overholt & ginger ale a couple weeks ago, and I know Jim Beam still makes a rye, but not much more than that.

andy --, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I don't drink it at all, actually. I just always think of it when I think of those decanter labels, because I once found a "RYE" label as part of a set and was surprised it was still offered!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

that proposal song - Shawn Krueger - is cute, though.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

most impressive of all is to shoot the president, though. that one wins, hands down

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose you all would find a knight in shining armor riding thru the lunch hour crowd to be more dignified?
