Were Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick really drunk in The Days of Wine and Roses?

Had to be. Otherwise - best performance of 'being drunk' ever.

Seriously - anyone know?

Any other movies where it came out later that actors were drunk / high on film?

I know Richard E Grant wasnt really drunk in Withnail and I (hes not a drinker) but to get him in the drunk mindset the director made him get mega-smashed on a night out, so he'd have a memory of drunkenness.

Also, the scene where he drank lighter fluid they put vinegar in the bottle without telling him, so his shocked gasp and "you got any more??" reaction was real :D

"Once A Thief". Fairly crappy 1965 thriller with Alain Delon, Ann-Margret, Van Heflin. However the performance by John Davis Chandler as a Andy Warhol lookalike junkie with paedophile tendencies is so convincing he must have been on smack - nodding out, lips stuck together with drool and saliva... it's amazing!

Top 5 Drunks on Film:

1. Ray Winstone (Nil By Mouth: in the kitchen at his mother-in-law's)

2. James Mason (A Star is Born: opening scene and at the Oscars)

3. Michael Caine (Educating Rita: pretty much all the way through)

4. Johnathon Price (The Rachel Papers: at the dinner party)

5. Richard E Grant (Withnail and I: in the cake shop)

Winstone is staggeringly accurate in his drunken-ness.

Worst Ever: Tom Cruise (A Few Good Men. Laughable.)

Lemmon and Remick are both fine in this, though the TV play was also exceptional. One main problem is Remick still looks great when she's 'bottomed out.'

Edwards also needed to omit the Mancini music in a few scenes.

and Edwards said he and Lemmon were heavy drinkers at this time; both of them, and Remick too, apparently became sober afterward.
