today i ran into a friend of mine that i have known for 3-4 years. we always had a platonic friendship, but the last couple of times i have seen him have been quite different ... the air has been thick with sexual tension and we flirt like crazy. anyway he gave me his phone number. and i know several reasons why i should call him (like cos i LIKE him and stuff) but i also can think of a few reasons why i shouldn't call him such as:
1. i am scared i will make an ass of myself cos i am shy.
s. there is the possibility that seeing him could upset a person we both know and love dearly.

so should i call him?

di, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think you should. Recently I've taken the more active approach, and admitted to someone I had a crush on that I liked him. However it's not a happy ending for me, but I don't regret having told him.

And don't worry about making fools of yourself, he would probably appriciate that you had the bravery to make the first move.

jellybean, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you could impress him with your counting skills!!

di, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

3. i think you should call him
k. i myself would find a reason why the affair is doomed from the off and tell myself this reason and convince myself and not call him

di, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

di your life suddenly seems strangely parallel to my entire high school term.

ethan, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why not call him right now? Ask him what he's doing tomorrow night.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh no not today. maybe tomorrow i think.

di, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

does anyone wanna call him pretending to be me so i don't have to do it? yee i'm such a wooss.

di, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suppose I could try, but he would suspect.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mount the fellow

mike hanle y, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hanle y now you are just being lewd.

di, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am going to phone him tomorrow. you can all beat me to death with my own shoes if i don't.

but what about the mutual friend? should i let this person know in advance? or should i wait and see if there is anything in this crush before i upset the apple cart?

di, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talk to your mutual friend first and say you were thinking of calling him to hang out for a bit. Judge accordingly.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your own happiness worth making an ass of yourself for, and the person will get over it.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

did u call?

ducklingmonster, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no. i convinced myself that *crush* would never do anything that might upset our *friend* so i decided it was a waste of time trying.

di, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, that would be suggestion number "k." from Doctor mark s.

(Personally, I think you should call him. He did you give his number instead of asking for yours, did he not?)

felicity, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i called him last night, to see what he was up to. he were going to bed! due to 5000 word article deadline monday that he hasn't started, but said if i knew anything good happening he would come with. i was myself on my way to a party but i made it sound unfavourable cos i didn't want "first date" to be in a room full of strangers.

he has my number now. the ball is in his court. i'm relieved about it cos i REALLY don't like calling people. i spent an embarassing amount of time last night running to and from phone-booth before gettin the nerve.

do ya think he likes me, a wo-wo-wo-oh?

di, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, congrats, Di! Hope you'll invite him to something soon . . . or crush will call you . . . or that you're just happy to have hit the ball back over the net. :)

felicity, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Echoing Felicity there -- hurrah! May goodness happen.

Ronan, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six months pass...
that guy was such a dick. i hung with him one night and he kept going on about how great it is that rock stars have groupies. lame-o! whaddaya know, i have another great big huge crush now.

di, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But crushes are sooooo nice though, aren't they?

C J, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, crushes are horrible.

rosemary, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

crushes are nice, they are harmless and mental. its love you have to avoid, that shit can make you really really sad.

di, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Being crushed on can be kinda nice, though it's not happened much with me! Ah well.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The most classic kind of crushes are the secret ones, so you may be underestimating yourself, Ned.

felicity, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps...but I tend to look at myself as through a glass darkly, if that's not too cryptic.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think anyone has ever had a crush on me. I feel better about that now - knowing they are supposed to be secret! I can pretend!! Yay!!

C J, Sunday, 21 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I very rarely have crushes. I would dearly love for it to happen more often.

Sean, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I'm just not going to attempt an answer to the initial question because it's too close to the bone of recent events in my life, and - given that I managed those events like a bull in Llardo accessory store - my response would be invalid.

I do, however, have a related question about crushes: What is wrong with a person who attracts crushes [particularly from younger women] but also seems to be a no hoper when it comes to relationships, love, and dating? [A chocolate fish to anyone who can answer satisfactorily this perplexing question.]

bnw, Friday, 3 April 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

If you are thrilled by someone, even thought you have a partner, then do it, because you never know where attraction, passion and lust can lead you. Don't be swayed by security and comfort. Excitement and fireworks are what life is all about.

its always good to get a lot of different opinions but seriously my advice is just about 100% the exact opposite of this

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Friday, 3 April 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

unless you are 18 in which case you should probably break up with your girlfriend and watch this new crush relationship fizzle and die so you can learn a lesson

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Friday, 3 April 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

leave the girl, and the job. build a new life for yourself in the wild.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 3 April 2009 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

Must admit, had to google McCandless. My POV is from coming out of a 10 year relationship & finding out that it wasn't the first time I'd been cheated on. The old adage "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em". Never thought I'd join that camp, but all experiences are leading me to believe we are not meant to be monogomous.

Hard like armour, Friday, 3 April 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

And if you are discreet and no-one finds out about it, then where is the harm?

P.S., cutty & bnw - yes & yes. I have retained some standards. They've just shifted somewhat from the morals that were instilled in me by my wonderful parents. Now I find myself turning to the darkside - the "me, me, me/take, take, take" generation. There's only so much you can give before you start to think, "Hey, you know what, I'm not such a bad person, maybe people should give back to me for a change."

hard to crush on same person for any extended period of time after actually getting together with them. either gets better than a crush or gets old pretty quickly after that point.
