18/20

It's all in the eyes.

#13 dude rules.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think #13 is a lady.
I got 14/20.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

*double take*

Wow. Maybe. I dunno. I'm sure there will be more opinons.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Whichever sex, the person still looks vaguely vampiric.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

17/20. and im pretty sure its a guy.

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

18/20

lady #13 certainly does look manish though. something in the forehead.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

#18's is how bad I imagine my fake smile looks.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

17/20. 13 is a definitely a creature of the night.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

9/20 and yeah, number 13 is a scary looking thing. I thought she was genuinely smiling, though.

*fake smile*

josh in sf (stfu kthx), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

spot the fake smile

Brad Baillod (Bnad), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Damn. I knew I should have had patience with that search.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

11/20. A few were just guesswork.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

15/20. I might have gotten more, but I said a few were real when I thought they were fake, just because I thought I had chosen too many fakes already.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit, I expected to get hardly anyone right, but I got 16. Admittedly I based almost all my answers on the eyes, rather than the actual smile. And some looked like they were laughing before i even started the video.

I'm sorry guy #19, for not believing in your smile. And the asian girl was too cute for me to think she'd LIE to me.

Golly! This is all very exciting isn't it?
Oh...

Øystein in line (Øystein), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

16/20. Most of the fake smiles were pretty easy to spot, because they didn't involve any other muscles than those around the mouth.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I was exactly the same about the asian girl.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

9/20
Damn, I thought I had it all figured out.

Pork Cheops (willpie), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

So what consitutes a "fake smile"? Does it mean that all of the fakers are actually unhappy?

I'm picturing the researchers showing people clips from Everybody Loves Raymond or something, and filming them when Doris Roberts says "buttocks". And then if they don't smile, the researcher says something like, "well, just fake it then.."

Dave will do (dave225.3), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

the fake smiles also seemed to fade prematurely. 19 *was* a fucker.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

10/20 My only redeeming point? I got the Asian Girl correctly.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 16 February 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

18/20. I think #13 is a man.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

This is strange: I knew 'we'd done this', but the postings on this thread seemed exactly like the thread I remembered.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

17/20

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

18/20. Just went by whatever smiles made me feel like smiling myself. Surprised it worked.

Father Brian Eno (Father Brian Eno), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

12/20. I agree that they should have clarified what makes a smile fake. If they'd said half the people were being shown a funny video clip and the rest were just asked to smile it would have been better.

Those of you who got 16+, how optimistic are you and how well did you think you'd do before the test?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 February 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

i'm more optimistic than now, and thought i'd do well. naturally.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 16 February 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

now=not

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 16 February 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that they should have clarified what makes a smile fake. If they'd said half the people were being shown a funny video clip and the rest were just asked to smile it would have been better.

That's not the point: it's your ability to tell, like in real life, when people fake it. Based on your gut feeling. Or whatever.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

But what is fake? They are all smiling if smiling is raising the corners of your mouth.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Huh? It's being able to tell if they make a *fake* or *genuine* smile. You can see wrinkles if they make a genuine smile. Their eyes remain the same if they don't.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

WHAAAAAT!? When they filmed these people, did they say, "Smile!"? ANd then did they say, "So did you mean that or not?" What is a real -vs- fake smile in a lab environment, I think is the more specific question.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

i got 14/20. i blame it on being fixated on the creepiness of 13. also, 16 seems like someone i want in my life... maybe as a mentor or father-in-law?

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dave, I don't know, I just know that I'm good at spotting a fake or genuine smile. ;-)

I think they probably just said: smile if they wanted a fake smile. *shrug*

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

16/20 And #13 wasn't creepy, that's just your ordinary everyday goth gender-confused kid :P

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

18/20, I missed #4 and #10.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

14/20. #13 is a woman! with choices!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

This one's real Nath! ☺

Dave will do (dave225.3), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

maybe they just presented people with various pictures, some of which people found smile worthy, and some of which they didnt, and then told them to smile regardless of whether they thought they SHOULD smile.
