UK people - a direct debit question

Hello,

I have a direct debit agreement with a finance company. 2 months ago they accidentaly cancelled the direct debit so they had to send me a new direct debit mandate that I filled out. (One of the normal ones with the instruction the the bank manager blah blah blah)
I sent it back and the finance company sent me a letter thanking me for setting it up again and confirming that the money would once again start to be taken on the date stated.

However! The finance company did not take their money, they called me and said that the bank had dishonoured the payment because I had not instructed them to let the finance company take the money. I don't understand this.... I have a few direct debits set up and to my knowledge I have never had to contact the bank seperately.

I have since filled in a new direct debit mandate but I'm worried that the same thing will happen again. I NEVER default on payments! Silly people. Is it worth contacting the bank?

Thank you!!!

What seems to have happened is: the bank didn't get the new DD instruction in time.

Usually you don't have to contact the bank separately when setting up DDs (though some people advise you to when cancelling them). Possibly the finance company have fucked up here, or the bank didn't receive the instruction in time. But yeah why not just write to the bank this time to be on the safe side.

You might be able to confirm the DD online, if you have online banking.

I thought the slip you fill in has to go to your bank, whether you send it directly or whether the company sends it on your behalf. It sounds like the company didn't do this. I'd get in touch with your bank either way.
