I've always found him annoying.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh, he's sweet. Like Garth Crooks!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:50 (twenty years ago)

is that the dj who sounds like someone going "OWAAA WAHHH WAAAAAH OWW"

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I like Gary Crowley. He's like the halfway bearable Robert Elms.

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:17 (twenty years ago)

He's the male Jo Whiley.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Robert Elms halfway is still 50% too much.

soukesian, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:36 (twenty years ago)

As a direct result of this thread, I had a dream about The Crow last night.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I thought I detected a homo-erotic undertone in your original post, even if unconscious.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 08:09 (twenty years ago)

His boyish, genuine enthusiasm for all sorts of new bollocks even though he's about 45 - classic. And for being the DJ in the dodgy-but-classic 'A Solid Bond In Your Heart' video - classic.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

What was the name of that late night ITV show in the early 90s he used to present with the live footage of all the indie stars of the day? That was classic.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 10:56 (twenty years ago)

What about Gaz Top - the Welsh Gary Crowley?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

He used to present The Beat:

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

The Beat was great. I have some awesome footage of the god machine and the jesus lizard from that.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 12:02 (twenty years ago)

ah, the beat! i have tapes full of old pulp, sleepr and, uh, thurman stuff offa that. bless hcrowley - the only man to be thrown off a kids tv show for simulating anal penetration with a banana...and i won a carter usm video and a suede single off his glr show two sundays in a row in 1993!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah The Beat, that's what I was thinking of. Remember watching Blur, Sultans of Ping, Mercury Rev, probably Carter USM as well I should imagine. I thought it started going downhill around '94 with bands like Thurman but I suppose that was the end of that period of UK indie with the emergence of BritPop.

I think my sister had a load of stuff taped from that show but I doubt she still has it.

Haha xpost Thurman were SUCK!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Crowley fans who haven't yet enjoyed it should rush out and get the Jam DVD in which he interviews 'the other two' sprawled on a bed in a provocative and sexy manner.

I'm thinking of Alba, really.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I thought you meant Stephen and Gillian. And Chris Morris. Having sex.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

I rememeber seeing a somewhat sycophantic Crowley interview with Elton John in the 80s: both of them sitting on grass and (this was during Elton's first marriage period)with a toe-curlingly embarrassing element where Elton was portraying himself as an average heterosexual person enjoying marital relations around 3 times a week.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

How exactly was he "portraying" the frequency of his marital relations?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

A large sketchboard on an easel.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

He was literally....

(in a jokey 'all us lads together/too much information - this is Saturday afternoon television' kind of way)

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:47 (twenty years ago)

By going:

"Phwooaaarrrrr, eh? I mean, phwoaaaaarr, do what?"

... every couple of minutes

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

There was another programme he hosted, think it was on the bbc round about late 1991/early 1992 featuring bands playing at the marquee. It was there my friends and i were introduced to the considerable charms of Tara from 5.30.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

TV Cream says he also presented Ear Say and Fun Factory:

http://tv.cream.org/a-z/e/
(scroll down to ear say)

Did he not also do some sort of naff pop quiz on ITV mid 80's - Pop Around or something like that?

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It can't have been as bad as that late night one Phil Alexander used to present a couple of years ago, in which he name-checked my local kebab house on a weekly basis.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Fun factory, i believe was the one with the 'banana' incident, although it was just a 'peeking out of his pants' incident.

He did, the week before, brandish a PIL bootleg.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

i worked with him in the late 90s a couple of times on the inflight radio show on virgin, and he was really very very nice, and great to work with. it makes me happy whenever i see that he's still doing loads of stuff.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha - Phil Alexander used to present RAW the tv companion to the "metal" magazine of the same name. I think i recorded the entire output from 91-94 during my pre-teen metal phase (that isnt a genre BTW).

So Crowley - Classic
