Well, I got 4 in the list. I don't think I've seen alot of these films, but it looks like a broad cross-section of tastes, which is to be applauded.

james e l, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well done anthony. Apart from the fact that I hate 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and there's no 'Back to the Future', it's not a bad list. Oh, and 'Cinema Paradiso' sucks. See 'Toto the Hero' for a much better film on similar lines. Oh, and I didn't get the big fuss about 'Out of Sight'. Is it a J-Lo ass thing? Yay for Philadelphia Story making it, and 'Being John Malkovich' being so high. I'm surprised, if not especially bothered, that there's no 'Star Wars'. I've never heard of the two films at numbers 25.

Nick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buffalo 66? Time to question someone's sanity.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was a top 50... or is there a second post coming?

Madchen, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There were 17 films that were tied near the bottom , everyone giving one film 25 points.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Behold the power of the half Italian/half Irish. Ray Liotta, phwoarr.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I too had 4 in the list. A bit surprised by how strongly Hitchcock features (although I did vote for Vertigo).

Hate to be a stats bore Anthony, but how many people voted and which movie came bottom?

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buffalo 66? Me no like. Will vote next time.

DG, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey, i had the top 3! i thought i was going to have loads, but then i only got one more.

gareth, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

19 people voted.
Le Haine was the lowest title.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay! That was mine.

Madchen, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seven from my list. Mad props to the rest of you that voted for _Midnight Run_. Poop on you that didn't vote for _A Christmas Story_. Big fat POOP.

And you Kubrick heads... I don't know...

David Raposa, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We had 100 years of cinema, we are urban and clever. And alot of us choose Bill & Teds and Ferris Buller. That is more scary then loving Kubrick.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wa-hey! 'Goodfellas' wins! Was hoping to see 'Mad Max' there too but maybe I'm on my own there. It's a fantastic list only 3 movies I dont really like Cinema Paradiso, Vertigo and Hudsucker Proxy (although Proxy isnt that bad, it's just the worst Coen Bros. movie). Never really got 'Breathless' tho.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh... who didn't vote for Annie Hall?

JM, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay for #14 and of course for the triumph of the devastating #'s 4 through 7 over Ferris. And for misanthropy.

Nick B., Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I voted for 'Crimes and misdemeanours', Jimmy. That's my fave W.A. pic.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you woody allen fans got together , it woul have worked We got votes form crimes and misdemnors, Annie Hall, Manhattan and at least 3 others .

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Nick D said re. Grant / Hepburn / Stewart / Hussey.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He he, I voted for Buffalo 66, Christina Ricci dancing in the bowling alley is burned into my sick and twisted mind.

james e l, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only got two up there. No Hartley, and No Allen, and only one Peckinpah. I voted for Annie Hall AND Manhattan. I mean, everyone who's anyone knows that those are the only two to argue about.

Also WRONG HIGH SCHOOL FILMS.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is far too low down this list, btw.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I voted for Bill and Ted's!...Are we gonna all post our individual lists?

james e l, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So many I should have voted for but forgot.

Ed, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about Airplane?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did anyone else vote for "Planes, trains and automobiles"?

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well done on numbers 2, 8, 12, 13, 22.

No Slap Shot. Damn. Where are my friends in the Great White North when I need them?

Andy, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, the Hanson Brothers. Thank you for the reminder.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i would have voted for planes, trains, and automobiles, if i had voted. it makes you laugh, and then it makes you cry. buffalo '66 should have been higher up, the film is pure pleasure. it's the closest i've ever been to sniffing uncut cocaine, i imagine. annie hall is woody allen's best movie and should have ranked. 'i love movies' would be a good idea for a messageboard. much easier to talk about than music because people don't get locked into genres.

ethan, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also: vertigo is better than rear window, and i think happiness should have been on the list. glad to see unabashed love of rushmore, too.

ethan, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best Hitchcock movie is Rope but we already have a homoerotic murder movie on the list dont we ?

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's the weirdest assessment of ghostbusters i've ever heard.

ethan, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was talking about Midnight Cowboys

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm glad to see a few well chosen Hitchcocks, but his best certainly isn't Rope! Ok, but how about near the end when James Stewart asks a second time for a drink, and a fagged-out Farley Granger mewls "He SAID you could have it!!" Hi-sterical.

What about "Don't Look Now"?

Sean, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, shit, I forgot to vote. My list would only have included 1 (Goodfellas) of the list though. And I would have voted fo La Haine too. I can't believe I missed the chance to get Annie Hall on there! Arse!

Ally C, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and the best Hitchcock film is easily Rope. Why do people hate it so much?

Ally C, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't hate "Rope", its a fairly gripping script, and has the interesting "long take" style. But for a director like Hitchcock with so many brilliant films to his name, I can't possibly rate it his best.

Sean, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The interaction, how he manages to make the blatant eroticism boil beneath the surface. How you suspect it is a Butch/Bitch situtation but you never know who is which. I think it is his most challenging movie.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buffalo 66 rocks. None of the movies up there would have been on my list if I had made one, but it's a fine list. Top movies unseen by me : Rear Window, Breathless, The Wild Bunch (I haven't seen anything before about 1992, pretty much).

Patrick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish that Black Narcissus made the list. I have seen it twice in the last 4 days and have become entranced.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rope was always a personal favorite of mine, too, that opening shot is quite a way to start off a movie! Though watching Jimmy Stewart spout Ubermensch-murder theories with a straight face is kind of hard without giggling. That movie reminds me, I'm glad we don't have to wear Fedoras in our society anymore, one more thing to keep track of, I would have lost 50 of 'em by now...

Joe, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Black Narcissus rocks! Sister Ruth in her drenched, Calcutta dress (sigh)--I think I'm in love. :) Seriously, though, doesn't she look somewhat like Emma Thompson?

Joe, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Scene with the Lipstick. God they should show that movie at "ex Gay" meetings

anthony, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The problem is, I never have any urge to vote (or really, just make lists and allocate points) until I see the final result, and either say "yeah, I love that film, why isn't it higher?" or else scream "Hey!!! Where the fuck is Performance on that list?"

masonic boom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I nearly voted for Performance. I completely forgot about Powell & Pressburger and Woody Allen. Never mind.

Nick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm, that Woody Allen problem scuppered me I know. Out of interest then, who comes out as the best director if you do it like that. Oh, and Antony, noi Kubrick bias just cos you like him. (It would look like Hitch would win obviously, but it depends how truly scattered the Allen votes and Kubrick votes were).

Pete, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure I'd vote for "Performance", but I did mention "Don't Look Now", which was also directed by Nic Roeg... Overall, he's overlooked (Walkabout, The Man who Fell to Earth, Bad Timing, etc.)

Sean, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't vote because picking is hard enough without allocating bloody POINTS. Although my top film is The Ruling Class, where P. O'Toole thiks he's Jesus and sleeps on cross. Then family send him to the shrink and like him more when he thinks he's Jack The Ripper (Nick Currie has never really seen this film, shocka). Two is Man Who Fell to Earth by Roeg (Performance, Don't Look Now too). A Matter of Life and Death is best Powell and Pressburger, it just is. ALL kitchen sink films from Smiths phase. Do The Right Thing, Spike Lee. I love campness of Lair Of The White Worm and Derek Jarman's sets for The Devils (both Ken Russell who is now like Michael Winner with a brain, poor sod). Actually, there's a whole bunch of what I call Furtive Cinema: Victim and The Servant, Death In Venice, some T. Williams adaptations, the classic Picture of Dorian Gray (what, did they eat Hurd Hatfield after 'cos he wasn't in much else). Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve, The Ghost and Mrs Muir), most films with women called Hepburn in (when either star with the aforementioned Mr. O'Toole I am in meltdown mode) and many more but I will now STFU.

suzy, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Off the top of my head :

james, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
