This is the thread where you document the biggest bargains you couped of the day.

Benjy's happy hour all items £1 and i got this salad thing which is normally £3.29 for a quid. Sweet. The drawback obv was that I ate salad :(

Aw, man, I thought this was going to be the thread where we name and shame those cheapskates who always bum cigarettes, never pay their share of the tab, skip rounds, don't pay the bills, etc. etc. :-(

We could do that too!

If we named them, it wouldn't be cheapskates anonymous!

I have exactly £0 until the end of the month (well technically more like £-2000), so I'm doing excellent bargainous things like, er, not eating at all.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

The advantage of that is, if you do it long enough you'll never have to buy anything ever again! Disadvantage: executors of your estate won't thank you for a huge overdraft.

Me too, Archel... A tip: pasta with salad dressing is, I have discovered, nourishing and quite tasty.

yeah. not eating doesn't count as bargains because you're getting nothing for the money!

Today as accompaniments for our dinner, we had parsnips (9p a bag), organic potatoes (15p a bag) and turnip (5p for whole turnip). I wuv my local Tesco if you go about an hour or so before they shut.

Whenever shopping, I always grab some drinks/snacks to finish before I leave the supermarket, thus not paying for them. Since shrinkage is factored into costs whether people rack stuff or not, I'd be ripping myself off if I didn't.

when you're at a bar or restaurant, go to their bathroom and steal their toilet paper!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

although i guess thats theft and not a bargain

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Well, they don't normally make you pay for it - but is there a "reasonable use" clause?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 23 February 2006 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I take free tampons from this one tampon machine at school. That's as close as I come to the "old people who bring baggies to the buffet" deal.

today at lunch my mother wanted me to ask for a to-go cup for a glass of soda that i didn't drink. i vehemently refused.

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 23 February 2006 04:54 (twenty years ago)

i made rice pudding tonight because i didn't want to throw out a carton of milk that had just reached its sell-by date.

i gave my little dog a 'new toy' but it was really just a shoe box with a treat in it.

estela (estela), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:59 (twenty years ago)

we had really amazing catering at an event in switzerland but couldn't eat everything. being broke and not wanting any of the lovely treats to go to waste, we tried to carry as much as we could away with us. i ended up with a whole roast chicken wrapped in newspaper stuffed into my purse. it was a fairly small bag so it looked i had a bowling ball or something similar jammed in there, and the promoter gave me a really odd look as we were leaving.

My college boyfriend flunked out after his freshman year, so the following year I kept him hidden in my dorm room and fed him with food from the dining hall. I'd go back for seconds and stuff it all into tupperware containers. The staff thought I had a huge appetite. If campus security saw him they'd kick him out, so he could only leave the room at night. We did this for the whole fall semester.

Also, when he broke his glasses one time, rather than getting a new pair he used a pair he'd found at a party. They were green women's frames.

We have a friend who used to go to the Swedish Sailor's Bethel on the west side of NYC because they give out free sandwiches—two pieces of white bread and a slice of bologna. Finally they caught on and asked him for a donation of one dollar, so he stopped going there.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Beth, was your college boyfriend played by Chevy Chase?

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Well, he DID have a dimple in his chin.
