i mean, look, youre chatting up a girl and she tells you that she loves dross like love actually, do you say' hey i fucking love that film!' or do you just say that actually you prefer wanky arthouse or foreign films? or do you just pretend you never heard what she said.

dirtydenc, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Bored now.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

apologies

dirtydenc, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

stick to the threads you already started or revive old ones on the same subject.

one year passes...

pop quiz -- would it be fair to generalize about romantic comedies that it's usual for there to be rival suitors?

two main plots i guess:

- misunderstandings lol
- chicks dig jerks

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 6 January 2008 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

i told a girl i went out with once i liked rom-coms.

i shouldnt have.

mr x, Sunday, 6 January 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

yea a lot of them don't like them too.

a friend of mine makes fun of this guy I know because he told her he liked them

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

NEVER tell a woman you like these things. seriously. even if you think it might make you seem cute or whatever, NO. its a wrong move. i dont know why i told that girl, i think my guard was severely down. youre a MAN, you gotta be like 'i hate those crappy corny films! die hard or nothing, bitch'.

mr x, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

(obviously you shouldnt say 'bitch')

mr x, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Yo, Bitch, let's get some KFC and watch Escape from New York..."

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

not the best alternative thats been offered.

mr x, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Another plot staple:

- Opposites hate each other then oh noes we love each other the end

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Erm, any girl you "chat up" using While You Were Sleeping as fodder ain't worth the effort, bub.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Which is more naturalistic, rom-com or action thriller?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

another plot staple:

-fucking retarded male lead gets shit together, impresses nathalie portman

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

- Doris Day verbally spars with a gay dude, marries him.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I've patented the line, "Hmm,yeah I haven't seen any of those."

Kerm, Sunday, 6 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

"what are these films you speak of?"

mr x, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

girl, tonight is ALL about "while you were sleeping"

da croupier, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

crepey

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

then we'll follow it with a little "knocked up"

da croupier, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

And tomorrow you'll wake up to "The Seven Year Itch" amirite?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 January 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

I genuinely like romantic comedies, I often watch them with my friends, so I don't see why I shouldn't admit that. It hasn't done much bad so far.

But you probably only get the decentish ones in Finland, not like "What Women Want" or "The We3dding Planner" or "Nine Months" or such shit.

xp to Tuombot

Abbott, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Do you know in America the only foreign films we get are fucking sentimental pap and arthouse pronz?

Abbott, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

I should warn this board: plz not to see Dan 'IRL' or 'in real life' starring Steve Carrell as it saps all the jollity and posture from one's sould for a good 76 hours.

Abbott, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

da croupier, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

haa that sounds great!! u-tube??

and what, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Why wouldn't a dude admit it if he likes (some) chick flicks?

I'll take 'What Women Want' over Mad Max or Braveheart any day. And I think Where The Heart Is is the most watchable Natalie Portman movie.

Is crazy/beautiful a chick flick?

milo z, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

sadly no one's put his climactic screams of "BABE, WAIT!!! BABE, WAIT!!!" on youtube yet

No, we get those too. I've actually watched What Women Want with friends, I don't think it was that awful, though obviously not the best among rom-coms either.

What about telling a girl you like the new shins songs? Better, worse, same thing? I think you can be a jerk and still like a romantic comedy here and there. Or a shins song.

last season of West Wing would have rocked if Toby and Josh had battled it out for the love of Allison Janney.

milo z, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

ha the only reason i kept watching west wing into the 4th season is because i was waiting for that to happen!

horseshoe, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

My favourite Meg Ryan film is Addicted to Love, where she and Matthew Broderick are both these sort of stalkers, who meet while spying their respective exes, because they're now seeing each other, and then they decide to put a revenge upon them together. That's a refreshingly different premise for a rom-com.

milo z, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

The whole thing about women finding a guy irresistible b/c he likes romantic comedies is as insulting as the idea that a chick who likes NFL or college basketball is every dude's wet dream come true. They're lousy stereotypes all-around, in both directions.

dell, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

rom-com premise: dude who likes rom-coms and a chick who likes the NFL. CAN THEY MAKE IT TOGETHER?

but I think I should

milo z, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

that movie is so bad and provides none of the compensations of even a mediocre romcom.

horseshoe, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

kate b is crush of shame so i'm not going to say don't watch it.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

What was that one romantic comedy about a guy who is writing a movie or book and he must choose to end the movie/book by making the main character (based off of him) choose between the exotic girl or the homemaker (based off the girl helping him write the movie/book)? That one's my favorite.

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I have a good friend (male) who loves romantic comedies in secret.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

protagonist must help/befriend the rival suitor in almost all cases i can think of

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

that certainly never happens in real life

roxymuzak, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

:/

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

roxy can you think of any romcoms where the rival suitor is NOT a snivelling, irritating jerk? i can't

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

because usually in my experience the real problem is that the RS is actually kind of nice and cool

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

hm, maybe love actually, the subplot where dude is in love with his bff's wife?

roxymuzak, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

mm yeah, i haven't really seen any of those

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

:D

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

i loved serendipity the first time i saw it because i was on a plane, and because the girl i was dating at the time was quirky/romantic/flighty like kate b's character. last time i saw it i decided it was DREADFUL, and that the kate b character was actually a little psychotic. i DO love (good) rom-coms though.
