it is essex isnt it? maybe not technically but it might as well be. this place is a DUD.

londoner, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

it's not far from the dogs though which is classic

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

The dogs actually are in Chingford.

Chingford's ok and only the far side of it is Essex, out past Sewardstone.

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

there you go, so near it is actually there.

definitely classic then

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

This is where a whole bunch of my extended family are from.

And David Beckham too.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

think my bro is buying a house in chingford!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

It's got a tiny little commuter rail link to Liverpool St, which i find hilarious, but very useful, though I get off it at Walthamstow. It's quite close to bits of Epping Forest, which I imagine is quite useful in the summer.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I thought David Beckham came from Leytonstone? Same as Damon Albarn (though probably not in the same house)?

Chingford = the edge of London. People who live in London, especially people who don't come from London, have a tendency to say anything that's further out from the centre than where they live "isn't really London". I don't agree. London stops where the fields start. I grew up in Harlow, about 15-20 miles north of Chingford. As far as I was concerned I was in Essex, and Chingford was the start of London (where the fields stopped). Same with Enfield, Woodford, Romford, etc.

Chingford attractions = dog track & sainsburys.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

its london if it has a london postcode. i have some sympathy for the idea of romford or barking as london, but then i remember that rochdale and oldham are not manchester, and, thus, romford and barking are not london

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Chingford is a nasty little place full of r4cists and neo-fascists in my experience. A lot of the edge of London is like this, people who don't actually engage in London as a city and are second or third generation from the Blitzed out populations who "made good". As such their attitudes often are third hand from some sort of little England-mentality that things were better in the 1930's!!! Such people are easy prey for the far right.

My Dad worked in Chingford and the place always felt horrible to me.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Pete - that's actually a very good description of Harlow (and probably other London post-war new towns like Basildon, Stevenage, etc.)

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Am I right in thinking Norman Tebbit = Chingford?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

man, i didn't half used to love someone from chingford.

its not london, obv.

[apal mistake, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Yup (re: Tebbit).

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Harlow?!?!? Wow, I was born in Harlow. By mistake.

Boris and the Johnsons (kate), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Chingford Tor Ascender to thread.

I like Epping Forest. I mean, it's a forest, what's not to like?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

chingford IS borderline racist, actually. yeah. i like the little village feel of it but on the whole, it is somewhat prejudiced. people are weird here.

londoner, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

David Beckham - born in Leytonstone, grew up and schooled in Chingford, it would appear.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

but on the whole, it is somewhat prejudiced

lol!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Epping Forest seemed to claim him for their own, at least when I was tooling around there in 2004.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

ken, stop being such an english grammar nerd

londoner, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't the english grammar i was laughing at :-D

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

beckham once drew a picture of a greyhound called rosie red that's racing in the walthamstow dogs track because he misses it so much. bless him

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Fantastic: come walk the Beckham Trail!

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

ok then im guessing youre laughing at the understatement. cos if youre laughing at the idea that chingford isnt racist at all then i dunno what to say.

londoner, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Racism is a geographical state of mind.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I knew a Jewish car thief from Chingford. The claim to fame he bandied about on the kibbutz was that as a young 'un he had beaten the crap out of several members of East 17.

novamax (novamax), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

they tried to stop him stealing their flashy new cars, bought with the proceeds from the success of their 45s? or maybe he was just being racist towards them.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I think it was "I told those cahnts to turn their bloody music down, but they wouldn't bloody listen, would they?"

This was before they were famous, so they weren't playing their own stuff.

novamax (novamax), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

oh shut up steve m. i forgot that the idea of racism is a joke on ILX unless its in neon letters and someone is being hung from a tree.

londoner, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Never. I don't think you would need the neon latters.

I'm not sure what Ken was laughing at.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

certainly ken's "joke" would have been better if londoner had said "on the whole, chingfordians generalize too much" but nothing's perfect in chingford.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Thanks tracer for clearing it up.

I wasn't making a joke either!! I just loled innit.

ilx finds racism funny azzahole.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

chingfordites, maybe.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

i call 'em 'Chingies'

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Chingies eh? Wow, this thread has turned into cracker central pretty fast. Youre so cool steve in not bowing to notions of PC-dom and showing those coloureds you don't care about what they think. You deserve to write for Vice magazine.

danperrysbestfriend, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"Coloureds"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

its sarcasm

danperrysbestfriend, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Its sarcasm. I imagine thats what Steve thinks in his head, when being oh so witty and having fun with the idea of racism. Hes so cool, our Steve. Such a satirist.

danperrysbestfriend, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

you seem upset.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

why are you arguing with yourself?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Chingford is a nasty chavvy shithole where white flighters vote for borderline racists like Tebbit and Duncan Smith and live in slummy housing worth half of that they fled from. It's no Wanstead or Woodford, for sure.
But yes, it does have a London postcode, E4- between Bow (E3) and Clapton (E5). Essex officially starts at the River Lea anyway, under the old calendar.

snotty moore, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

lovely thread.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:32 (twenty years ago)

A veritable peach.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

needs more ethan, but you can't have everything.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:02 (twenty years ago)

PC Dom

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:16 (twenty years ago)

dom has joined the police?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

a cop both with a difference and on the edge.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:37 (twenty years ago)

we should make this yet another regionalised thread for idle banter. i'm only a few miles away from Chingford.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:38 (twenty years ago)

i was once in a bar with dorian from 'birds of a feather'.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:43 (twenty years ago)

I always though BoaF was more Theydon Bois - but turns out I was wrong. I had a friend who taught in a school in Hyams Park, which is Chingford borders. Impossible to discipline the kids as their parents would come and beat you up.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

NOT MY DARREN, YOU SLAYRG

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

we should make this yet another regionalised thread for idle banter. i'm only a few miles away from Chingford.

but in the order of scale, a few miles away would be like someone from germany joining the UK watercooler thread. or someone from india posting on the mongrels and sheepfuxxors thread!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Ned's on the watercooler thread and he's in bloody California!

Boris and the Johnsons (kate), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:11 (twenty years ago)

well he's only a few thousand miles away afterall.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Spiritually Ned lives in a watercooler.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

And literally.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

whether ned lives in a watercooler is academic

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

are you saying it's irrelevant?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

in a very unique way, yes

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

how unique exactly?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

literally unique

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

http://www.dreamstime.com/laughinggoat-thumb10320

LOL!, Thursday, 23 February 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I like the church in Chingford.

Duncan-Smith is a borderline racist? How exactly? Because he's a Tory no doubt.

Steve, you still living in Clapton, you big Nazi?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 23 February 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

jawol! we should drink in The Eclipse next week?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

It's a date. The Eclipse is great. No working class oiks.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I met the council leader of Epping Forest once and he was a nastily entitled little cunt.

Is Theydon Bois actually pronounced to rhyme with "NOIZE"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 February 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

what was he entitled to?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

According to ancient Epping Forest common law, he is entitled to convene Courts Leet, where he may act as petty constable for the vill and supervise all frankpledge arrangements.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Is Theydon Bois actually pronounced to rhyme with "NOIZE"?

Yup. Like 'boys', not like 'petit pois'. Also in Essex is a little village called Furneux Pelham, with the first bit pronounced 'Furnucks', not 'Furno'. Don't like no fancy French round there.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

In Tennessee they do that, too. "Lenoir City" = "LENORE CITY"
