What are good cities for "road trips"?

As stupid and "high school" as it might sound, a few friends and I are interested in taking a road trip this summer. What cities would you recommend for a good two or three days worth of things to see and do without struggling to keep ourselves entertained or finding things to make the drive worth it?

I've already visited New York City and San Francisco, but anything else is fair game.

how do we know what you find entertaining?

(probably wrongly) assuming interest in your basic touristy stuff, history, art, nature, food/drink, record stores, clubs, etc (and without actually having been to all or most of these places), I'd say...

Big Cities
Chicago
LA
DC/Baltimore
Boston
Philadelphia

Old Cities
Santa Fe/pueblos/Los Alamos/Bandelier/etc.
Charleston/Savannah/Hilton Head/Sea Islands
New Haven/Providence/Mystic/New Bedford/Newport

Young Cities
Miami
San Diego

Park Cities
Seattle
Portland
Denver

Theme Park Cities
Las Vegas
Nashville
Orlando

Twin Cities
San Antonio/Austin
Tucson/Phoenix

Bubbling Under
St. Louis
Houston
Detroit
Cleveland
Dallas/Fort Worth

GIven its current plight, I think New Orleans should be moved from "Party Town" to "Bubbling Under".
