Belle & Sebastian (the band, not the cartoon): classic or dud?

I went through a brief phase of thinking dud, but as their latest album is the best thing they've done since Sinister I'm upgrading them to classic.

I also have Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie stuck in my head, which is the main reason for starting this thread.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:39 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe we've never had this before!

what a great idea.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:41 (twenty years ago)

You do realise that there's a large contingent of ILX users that originally met on the B&S fans' mailing list, right?

(and an equally large contingent that hate them, I think)

(classic. And I too now have Le Pastie stuck in my head)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:42 (twenty years ago)

I have Stuart Murdoch's sleazy face in mine.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

I do, I do and I agree.

But I thought it would be could to have a little cat/pigeon interaction. And besides, I want someone to try and defend Legal Man.

xpost

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Are you saying he looks sleazy, or are you picturing him pulling a particular "sleaze face"?

(xpost)

Classic: DJs who play the theme from Eurotrash and Legal Man back-to-back.

(I heard it happen in a club in Edinburgh once)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:46 (twenty years ago)

I think he looks/is sleazy.

I don't like it when DJs play songs like that back-to-back. It's so "ooh look at me I've noticed that Taxman and Start have the same bassline aren't I clever".

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I'm in a bad mood this morning and it's all Sleazy Stuart's fault.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:57 (twenty years ago)

One thing I noticed about the current album - well, the DVD that comes with it: it's supposed to look like a 70s music TV show, but everyone in the audience looks like modern-day art school hipsters trying to dress up in a 70s style. This is, of course, what they *are*, but they failed miserably at actually looking like a 70s audience.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 09:59 (twenty years ago)

(I'm sure I remember someone posting on Sinister asking people to go to the BBC Scotland studios dressed in 70s outfits, for that recording session)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:00 (twenty years ago)

wouldn't it be a bit disturbing if they did actually look like people from the '70s?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

i'd never heard them until this year! i think they're pretty ok.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

anyway DUD, though some songs on the first three lps are nice.

fuck '70s TV, i wasn't even born then.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Nah, not really. After all, that was the effect they were trying to create.

(same as that video the Arctic Monkeys did a bit ago, only theirs was more convincing)

(xxpost)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

worst effect ever

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I agree that it's a bit rubbish - but doing it properly is better than half doing it.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:07 (twenty years ago)

who would have guessed the standard-bearers of nineties twee would morph into supertramp?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)

aw, i've had "sinister" the song stuck in my head all day! a wildly classic band in spite of themselves, and the cause of much joy and anguish in my personal life to boot. god love 'em, they'll probably be played at my wedding and my funeral. and yes, the new albnum is an absolute corker...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I want someone to try and defend Legal Man.

??? Legal Man is great! It's one of my favourite singles ever!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

(the difference being that supertramp's sixth album was good)

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Fortunate Hazel is OTM! I would throw Wizzard and Cockney Rebel in there, too.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

I definitely want Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying played at my funeral.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)

i saw a girl for a while last summer, who only had 2 cds that i could see. she played dear catastrophe waitress whenever i stayed over, and it reminds me of hazy south london summer days

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

what was the other CD?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Atari Teenage Riot — Live In Brixton

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

i think it was flaming lips.

she had some tapes i think

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

last night i kind of understood belle & sebastien. i wanted to play one of their song, judy and the dream of horses, i think. but i dont have any belle & sebastian, so i played alice coltrane

for that moment though, i knew what it was like, to be in a belle & sebastian mood, i was nostalgic for a recent past, tilting at an increasingly unlikely future, and fearful of a shifting present

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:07 (twenty years ago)

perhaps it was an existentialism of a suburban semi order

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

... but you're alright now one hopes?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:09 (twenty years ago)

i regret, sometimes, that i wasn't one of 'those' people. i think in a way, i was, and still am, but it wasn't quite like i thought it would be.

i missed the point, somewhere along the line, never joined the club

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

yes, i think so. i've resumed my normal place, on a hilltop. it was a brief glimpse

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

b&s aren't that big a phenom, out there. literally no-one in my sixth form (1500 people) was into them iirc (ok, exzcept dog latin), back when the broke (96-8). it's only really here on ilx that i've found committed fans. the g/f had 'boy with the arab strap' when i met ehr i guess.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

They are very popular, as indie music goes

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's not like they're not the Go-Betweens or something

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

you went to school w/ dog latin?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:36 (twenty years ago)

ilx-as-lunchroom: who sits together?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:37 (twenty years ago)

come on, are you the oops or the jaymc?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand. gimme sec.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

that's jaymc-esque recall, either way.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

at least I don't have an oops, dude

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:14 (twenty years ago)

"If after half an hour you haven't spotted the oops, you're the oops"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 24 February 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

I DOWNLOADED THAT CRAZY SHIT BUT FORGOT TO LISTEN TO IT.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

They'll always be classic to me. I always buy their new records, but I haven't given them a real, serious listen since Beyond the Sunrise made my ears bleed.
I suppose I'm not the only one who got through the darkest period of my life with B&S as a near-constant companion (not literally, since I was in Texas and they were in Glasgow or something). Met some lovely people--and Phil-two--through that mailing list/IRC channel that doesn't get so much traffic nowadays.

Pork Cheops (willpie), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't hate them nearly as much as I used to when they were inescapable.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I like their new LP.

The Nipper seems more doubtful.

I was thinking last night, of whether it would be interesting to see the TV programme, from which they took the name. I think I never have!

the bellefox, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

their song titles are good for pun-making

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Lazy Line Painter Jane is one of my favourite songs EVER. I have it on single. We downloaded it the other day and I was astounded at how great it was. The rest I didn't much care for. Their last single is also fantastic.
