The only one I ever bought specifically to get the DVD was that Sunday Observer that had Dune in it. I wanted to watch it, but was f*cked if I was going to pay for it. ;-P

Yeah, so I was suprised when I couldn't find a thread about it.
Is this a UK only phenomenon or does it happen elsewhere?

According to said article newspapers don't make any money from it.
The Guardian does it once a month.
Instead of subtitles you get to see a crappy transcript on the internet. What about deaf readers, eh? RAW DEAL.

i've never been involved with DVD promotions but i've done cover-mounted CDs and the rights/legal issues etc were tortuous. mind, that was - gulp - getting on for eight years ago now.
the plan with these giveaways was simple: hook people into the product with a big giveaway, then wow them with how ace the paper is so they keep reading it. problem, of course, is that everybody else is doing the same thing, meaning people keep reading their paper of choice and pick up another one every so often when there's a DVD they like; or they don't bother with a paper of choice at all and just pick and mix depending on who's got the best film.
hellfire, i bought a telegraph the other week for "saturday night and sunday morning". that said, as a hack i do try to read a cross-section of papers, so for me this can be quite a good way of ensuring i see something different each week ;)

― grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)
The point is/was that the sales spike doesn't cover the costs of the DVD. I'm not sure I believe this though, they must be piss cheap to produce and usually they license crap, which is covered with the logo of whoever owns it anyway.
Yes, the article is like a hissy fit in print.
― PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)
It probably doesn't work, as grimly says, but most papers get sucked into the giveaway arms race just to tread ciculation water. Is that metaphor mixed enough?
hellfire, i bought a telegraph the other week for "saturday night and sunday morning".
That's nothing - to get His Girl Friday I had to buy the Express.

Note how The Guardian saves costs by fooling the public with the (vastly inferior) remake, in which Alan Whicker has a nice chat with the Lord Summerisle on the veranda.
― Alba (Alba), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)
the sun was a bit cheap, making you send away for the recent Carry On dvds thus ensuring nobody bothered. (you could also pick them up in person from news agents like 'dillons' and 'martins', ie the unpopular newsagents. i didn't like the way the adverts concentrated on the popular colour films and just mentioned the better b&w ones as an afterthought)
― koogs (koogs), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)
yes - but of course if everyone's doing it, it makes the ABCs a joke (qv bulk sales etc).
my publication doesn't do the DVD thing. which means i can feel much better about its piddly circulation ;)

they also did 'taste of honey' the same weekend - interracial sex, smiths' lyrics and all.
that said, both were BAFTA choices rather than Telegraph choices.
what do you do with the dvds you don't care for that you now have lying around due to buying the paper it was in? oxfam? dustbin?

I feel a bit cheated that my favourite, which I already own two DVD copies of (Region 1, has a nicer box and was the only version available when I bought it, and region 2, which came out later and had an extra commentary track so was worth getting again), is now being given away for free to people who will never get round to watching it.
Actually I guess I own four copies already, since both editions have two discs, containing original and extended versions of the film.

Fair enough that they trim away all the extras and commentary etc with a free disc, but to make it a pain the arse to watch seems a bit excessive.
That said, the Guardian's free Dune DVD the other week was class (great transfer and sound) so am looking fwd to snagging The Wicker Man for free tomorrow - given that it's one of the best British horror movies ever made.

There was quite a gd piece by Matthew Sweet in the Guardian today, abt the way that DVD and DVD rentals have supplanted the FREE Euro flick education/enlightenment that used to be one of C4 and BBC2's most pleasing 'services' - I don't think he mentioned newspaper giveaways, but again the papers have given away films by ppl like Wenders, Chabrol, Forman etc
There is a gd bk to be written - at least, I wld buy one copy - abt the 'rise and fall of arthouse cinema' in the UK, the way it was marketed/exhibited/distributed etc
― Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 9 February 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
"Ever seen Last Year at Marienbad?"
Well now I picked up the DVD of that just last week!!!
(he mentions the newspaper giveaways, btw)
I think BBC4 does an OK job broadcasting foreign movies. Some of the role occupied by late night schedules on BBC2 and channel four could've been passed onto film four and BBC4 (what's the % of homes with digital these days?).
He should've mentioned local libraries - I watched my first Tarkovsky film after picking up 'Nostlagia'. Haven't used any other renting services.
