PC DVD player that will play ***all*** formats

Hi can someone recommend me a program for my PC (full name of product please) which will play ALL KNOWN FORMATS of movie files?
Someone has advised me "ulead dvd player" - does this sound like a good bet???
For example I downloaded some tv programmes and I had to record them onto SVCD format, but can I play it? Can I bugger ;)
PLEASE help lol :)

VLC Media Player. Free. Plays everything, you don't need to install codecs.

will this VLC thing work even if your computer is not DVD enabled?

You need a DVD drive to play DVDs, yes, PJ.

But you could still use it to play files from your hard drive or a CD, yes, if that's what you meant.

You could try doing the following:

1. Select Start->Run...
2. Type "cmd" and press [Enter].
3. Type "format c:" and press [Enter].
