Homicide: Life on Somerville St.

so my ballsy girlfriend bought a beautiful old home in a pretty fucked up part of town (note: in midtown Memphis "fucked up part of town" = four blocks from $750, 000+ foursquares and craftsman bungalows). We probably hear gunshots and tires squealing in a 200-yard radius from her house an average of 3X/ month. We usually don't get too rattled by it, as most homicides stem from an argument between people who know each other and are often related or, in this case, likely drug/ gang beef drive-by's, etc. But tonight, I'm pretty sure something went down between the back yard and the gas station parking lot directly behind the house. I mean, I could feel the force of the shots vibrate IN MY CHEST. Within about four minutes there were police cruisers circling the block, cops w/ flashlights running through the backyard, looking under my car(!) -fairly exciting for 8pm on a Thursday night...

so, ILX, regale me with tales of gunfire in yr hood

I was in traffic about six months ago, honked at a woman who stopped at a railroad crossing for no reason (not slowed, full stop). Her boyfriend/brother/husband doesn't take kindly to this, and as we near each other side to side a half-mile later, he decides to open his door (while moving) and flash a black semi-automatic at me. Woman sees this, starts slapping him about the ahead, peels off into a turn lane and runs a red to get away.

Still got their make and license, but when I tried to call the cops, they transferred me between three different stations and I just gave up.

He wasn't going to do anything in the middle of traffic of course, but his wife getting pissed and hitting him was awesome.

jeez, that's fucked. I've not had the pleasure of someone pulling a fire arm on me. See, that's the thing. I walk to the store in question fairly often, and usually after dark for beer, eggs, etc. I've never felt threatened. The wildest thing I encounter is crackhead transvestites giving blowjobs in the in the men's room - but overall they're pretty friendly. My biggest concern now would probably be stray gunfire.

A guy I worked with in Detroit was at a Farmer Jack (grocery store) that he sometimes referred to as "Farmer Crack" due to its bad location. He was walking in to the store and saw an asian man back out of a spot too quickly and kind of come close to hitting a middle aged mom-looking black woman. She got pissed, they argued about it a bit, then she pulled out a gun and pointed it at him while saying "I ought to blow your ass back to China or wherever you come from". He took off, the woman put the gun back and continued on into the store like nothing happened.

I heard an altercation a few months back and looked down from sixth floor window to see two guys in the middle of a usually busy street, one with a gun pointing at another who was walking backwards. The armed man ran up to him, took the other's backpack, and ran away. They seemed to know each other so I didn't call the fuzz... I assumed it was some weed thing. Cars just passed by them without slowing down. Oakland city nights, baby.

Twice, in two seperate neighborhoods, I have seen a body lying in a park near my apartment, with bright lights and police investigators at work, and both times I didn't figure out that the cameras weren't news crews until I heard somebody yell "Cut!" One episode of "Homicide", one of "Ein Fall für Zwei".

The first night we moved into our place in Jersey City, we heard this "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM ... AAAAHHHHHH! MURDER! MURDER!"

As it turned out, the guy was not murdered, but shot six times IN THE SAME LEG.

I saw a couple of guys cross the street the other day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

so how did the street react?

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

With due trepidation.

i saw a dead dude four blocks from work a few weeks ago. not really as "exciting" as one might expect.

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, he's dead. You expect him to dance and sing?
