Boro Park/Crown Heights, Brooklyn

I'm spending a few days in NYC next month - not enough time, really - but one thing I'd like to do is explore the Orthodox Jewish nabes of Boro Park and Crown Heights. (These seem a bit more approachable than Williamsburg - from what I hear, the Satmars are more reclusive.) Anyone have any suggestions? (hi, JBR)

i don't like borough park AT ALL... it's very dingy and depressing.

Eastern Parkway, dude! I just asked someone I know, her sister lives over there. When are you coming? Apparently Purim is Monday night (3/13) and Tuesday, 3/14, which is supposed to be a good time, but I don't know to what degree the festivities are open to the public and how much they're strictly among the community.

She also says the new Jewish Children's Museum is a huge hit, get off the 3 train at Kingston Ave and it should be right nearby, and there's a Mendy's deli downstairs from it. Also try the stores & restaurants on 13th Street (Boro Park) b/c it's bustling and lively and good to watch (on a Sunday, natch). I think that's all I got -- where's Jody?? XP: hahah!

Note: I have never been to Boro Park! Also, I am approximately the least Jewish person in the world. It's just kind of a hobby.

Awesome - and the Jewish Children's Museum helps me answer the nagging question "what am I going to bring home for my kids?"

Haha my street! Not surprised that the guy from F1sch3rs was "unprofessional"; that's just how he rolls. Their grocery store has a twitter account that he uses to say things like "Hot girls shopping in store again"...or so I've read.

Also I don't mind one way or the other w/r/t "organic" coffee, but I think of those two places is vegan and the other one gets baked goods from Balthazar. I know which one *I* want to try.

its funny--if you dont know either place and have a set of preconceived notions about gentrification youd probably assume that fisher is black and the breukelen guys are white.
