Eh? So Washington got burned and all the anarchists born too late missed it, who gives a flying one?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The what?? And me a historian, too.

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty inconsequential really.

DG, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We got the Star Spangled Banner out of that one, right? Dud.

Kris, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And the 1812 Overture?

Madchen, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, the 1812 Overture came out of the Napoleonic Wars, to which the War of 1812 is - if I remember what it is right - a kind of sideshow (Nap Wars being the actual second world war - WWII is more properly the fourth*)

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Would the Seven Years War be the first?

Steven James, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boring.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

War of 1812 produced that Battle of New Orleans song by Johnny Horton. Had things like the British running through the bramble. Bramble is the new Black.

Steven James, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Seven Years was much earlier (called the French and Indian War in US) and resulting in the French leaving Canada (well, politically anyway) and took place years before the American Revolution. The war of 1812 did go on at the same time as the Napoleonic War, and the 1812 Oveture is by Tchaikovsky, and celebrates the victory over Napoleon in Russia. The British were more concerned with France and Napoleon at the time, so the "American War of 1812" wasn't that important to them at the time.

So again it was a case of the French helping out the young U.S.-hey that includes Napoleon selling Louisiana to the Americans to raise money for his European wars (Louisiana having been regained from Spain when Napoleon occupied the Iberian Peninsula.

Why are we talking about this again?

tOM p, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

becasue someone said their ILM taboo was the 1812 war .

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hopefully Mike H will post here. It's good therapy.

Steven James, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

indeed, the war of 1812 was a consequence of the napoleanic war...because the british royal navy was very weary of neutral ships reaching Europe, it attacked all ships including American...and kidnapped so-called british deserters off american ships. The US senate thus wanted revenge on the british government but did not have the power or capacity to attack Britian itself...Britain being way to powerful and all...thus, they decided to attack British North America aka Canada. The war started in 1812 and ended in 1815. the Americans first invaded upper Canada...but with help of the natives, the canadians repelled the attack. And when the americans decided to invade Montreal, the french Canadians with a force outnumbered 5 to 1 destroyed the bloody american invaders, which led to the canadians invasion of the USA and the burning of Fort Washington. The war ended in 1815, both americans and canadians beleived they won the war. But let's get things straight, the americans started the war, and invaded us...we kick you out and invaded you thereafter...and the battle of new orleans you won...well...peace was signed in britain a feww weeks before but didn't reack north america in time...thus the battle was a dud, and had no consequences...so there you go, take it from me...this is why and how the war took place...for more info. e-mail me...

You are a history major arent you Max ? Brillant Summary. We learn about as matter of course in Socail Studies

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Which bit is "Upper Canada" and — unless it is merely a silly name — why the fuXoR did the Americans not invade LOWER Canada first?

mark s, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Upper Canada is further up St Lawrence River and so easier to get to, no tramping through Maine for many miles first.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is so neat telling everyone about Canadian History.
I love Canada .

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'ah, but we saved YOUR ass in world war three!'

everything i know about england i learned from that simpsons episode set in the future where lisa almost gets married. the part when the guy's father says lisa's weak chuckle is a 'boisterous american laugh' sums up everything robin hates about the simpsons, i suppose.

ethan, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I like the Simpsons. The only Murdoch product I've never boycotted, and that's saying something from me :).

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Max, I thought that it was the burning of City Hall in Toronto (then called York) which led to the Canadian invasion of the US. And *that* is why the White House is white, because they had to paint it white to cover up the scorch marks where the Canadian troops tried to burn it down.

MarkH, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I refuse to post on this thread

Gale, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight months pass...
1812-1814-Mark the City Hall in Toronto was burned by a couple of anarchist alcoholics who got drunk and decided they didn't like their government. A completely internal matter that had nothing to do with America. Besides the next day they all got hanged outside the building they had burned down the night before. The white house on the otherhand was burned down by the british in 1814.

Some Person et cetera, Friday, 1 November 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The town of York was razed by American forces that sailed across Lake Ontario. Don't know about city hall. Don't even know if York was incorporated by then.
