From the BBC:

Irish rock stars Bob Geldof and Bono are among some 191 nominees in the running for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

Geldof was nominated for organising last year's Live8 charity concerts, while U2 frontman Bono was proposed for campaigning against world poverty.

Other nominees include former US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Israeli dissident Mordechai Vanunu.

OK, Geldof and Bono are absurd enough....BUT WAIT

The list of nominees includes:

* Former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, for helping secure a peace deal in Aceh

* US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton

* Indian scholar Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

* Austria's SOS Children's Villages

* Former Illinois governor and death penalty opponent George Ryan

* Indian anti-child labour campaigner Kailash Satyarthi

WHAT. Did the US nominate him? Is this some kind of funny joke?

If I remember right, anyone can nominate anyone else. Malkin probably had a write-in campaign.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 February 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

he made the world safe for insane fundamentalist crusaders

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

the horrible irony is that if he wins, i will shoot myself to death, and possibly others.

lamebrains (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

i mean possibly shoot others, not shoot myself to death or to others. that doesn't make any sense.

His comic books were quite nicely drawn.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 February 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 February 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I think we might havew to nominate teeny for 2007, Mark, but I'm up for it if you are.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 25 February 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Upon informing a friend of mine of the nomination, I became aware that this friend knew only of comic-book John Bolton. After looking UN John Bolton up on Wikipedia, he announced that comic-book John Bolton deserved the prize more.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Saturday that the world body is hobbled "by bad management, by sex and corruption..."

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 26 February 2006 06:24 (twenty years ago)

i was gonna say, you can nominate ANYONE. shit, someone could nominate trife for this award (and bolton is to the UN what trife is to ILX, so why the hell not?)

doesn't mean that he'll win, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 26 February 2006 06:33 (twenty years ago)

trife : ilx :: andrew young : un

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 26 February 2006 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Bush 'n' Blair were nominated last time, weren't they?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 26 February 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

that is correct.

maura (maura), Sunday, 26 February 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

First of all, ask how many people has Bolton killed?

Usually, the honor of a nomination is reserved for murderers like Tookie Williams or the supervisor of the Rwandan massacre, Koffi Annan.

If Bolton can be proved to have embezzled billions from the U.N. directly and through his son, he may have a shot a winning.
