Golders Green to Brighton - round or through the smoke?

Just going to drive in a couple of hours time from Golders Green to Brighton.
The question is, do I drive THROUGH London (congestion, traffic jams, traffic lights, bad driving, hassle) or AROUND London (congestion, traffic jams, M25, takes forever even to get to Gatwick)
I'm starting to err on the side of driving through the city.
Opinions please???

round, we made the mistake of driving through once to Gatwick (from Walthamstow)and it was a bit of a mare, you really get caught up around Croydon etc.

Go round the north circular to the hanger lane gyratory, then head out west on the A40 until you get to the M25. Trust me, you don't want to go through town.

he's right, although we now go round the 406 to the A13, then you can be at the big bridge in 20 minutes on a good run

a13 is good for the e17, 16 in the clip and 1 in the hole. hobbs route...is the right one, if you don't want to be a tad bit late

Yeah, I'd kinda started doing the A406 / A13 thing and you do save quite a lot of time.
It's just a bit of a 'lonely' route if you get my gist, maybe I do need to see all those shopfronts and cherubs faces pressed up against windows on my way down.... it's more the M25 bit I find depressing, it seems you're driving an age on the M'way before you hit Gatwick.
The decision is made as soon as I leave home, whether to turn left or right... maybe check back here to see the decision I made ;) LOL Thanks for your responses!!!!

If you're determined to go through town then head out on the A3 or the A2, but not the A23.
