let's discuss embroidered leather jackets

i just started noticing them this winter. elaborate stitchwork all over ... the most common style seems to be black stiching on black leather of abstract patterns, but some use multicolored thread, with girls, escalades, al pacino as scarface, "money, power, respect," etc ... do you have one? do you want one?

I am not black or from Bed Stuy or hood rich, therefore 'no' to both questions.

Any pics? All I can think of is cowboy coats w/Nascar shit embroidered on them.

Let's talk about Irina's kickass warm-up jacket instead.

i started seeing these a year or two ago. they're sorta goofy,. there was one guy i saw on the subway a lot who had a baby-blue one, with white stitching. looked kinda sissy, frankly, but it was obviously supposed to look hood.

jeans w/embroidered pockets, too. hip-hop is having its embroidery moment.

She's CRAFTSY - she gets around
She's CRAFTSY - she's always down
She's CRAFTSY - she's got a gripe
She's CRAFTSY - and she's just my type

Seriously, TH, Irina. Get with the program.

Oi, these are EVERYwhere and I just don't geddit. What I like better is one kid down the street who has, like, an old-fashioned letter jacket, red wool w/ yellow leather sleeves. Now THAT'S kind of sharp.

Was just at the MAGIC (men's apparel) trade show in Vegas and saw a lot of these, especially marketed to a hip-hop audience -- saw plenty of Scarface jackets and some with Negro League baseball team logos.

I have trouble understanding why a lot of licenced merchandise exists in the first place, but a leather jacket with an all-over embroidery of SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS blew my mind. Who? Why? Do thugs like Spongebob?

I saw some VERY cute pink bomber jacket with embroidery on Diesel Kids site. I so crave to dress up Ophelia with it but I doubt i'll find it here. :-(

The worst type of jacket is those sports-generic leather coats, you know what I mean? The ones with the logos of ALL 32 NFL TEAMS on them. Or all 783 NBA teams, whatever. My point is, people should pick a goddamn team and wear their things, not spend $500 on a coat that displays ALL of the teams. What does that even mean?

WHO PUT THIS THING TOGETHER?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 27 February 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Is this a new thing? Did they go out of style and are now back in on the coasts but they never went out of style here in the midwest? Or is it a specific style that's new? Anyway I see them plenty here, nascar and pro ball ones mostly although I've seen a couple of scarface-type ones too.

No, no, these are, like, one-color embroidery on a solid-color jacket; everything is only shown in outline, not in applique or any solid colors; and it's as if the whole thing is done with only one line of stitches, one little picture/scene after another, all connected. Kind of neat but quite un-tough.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 27 February 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

ah, fancy.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 27 February 2006 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the solid colors on the one pictured aren't very common. I haven't actually seen one like that.

“We can and do embroidery on leather,” says Al Wilkie of Caddco Designs, Wills Point, Texas. “But I must admit, at the first show, the first time we put a piece on the machine, we each took a long, deep breath.”

Couple years ago, a vintage airplane ephemera shop in Burbank had a WWII-style brown bomber jacket with this painted on the back...

...a 1939 World's Fair card table.

I would have sold everything I had to purchase it, but it wasn't for sale...

I want to see someone combine the Scarface meme with the all-NBA-teams-ever meme and the Neighborhoodies thing too, just to cover all babses.
