The other night on Radio 5 they had mini-items about two trends in New York and I wondered if they were true or just MEDIA LIES.

i. Since Sept 11th, women aren't buying high heels and have all gone back to flat shoes for speed of flight in a repeat incident. Racks in trainer (sorry, sneaker) shops (sorry, stores - this could run and run) are empty and all the New Year sales are full of stilettos and kitten heels.

ii. Pyjama (sorry pajama - I told you) parties are quite the thing. Apparently this originated with students in exam time who were up all hours revising and didn't have time to change before slipping round to each others flats (sorry, apartments, yawn) for fun and games.

So tell me.

N., Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's all bullshit, sorry Nick. I mean, yeah, sometimes your friends crash your place and you all then obviously wear pajamas but I'd hardly call that a party. I only know one person who's been seen in public in pajamas, and that was cos she was woken from a dead sleep from a hysterical friend at a bar round the corner so she went to go get her. We all still have our millions of high heels and such - it's not exactly HARD to kick off your shoes and run if necessary. Quite honestly I've never even thought of that.

Ally, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Meeja tripe!

'Jama parties are nothing new. I've run loads of errands around my neighborhood in my PJs, but NOT in this weather which is decidedly cold and sloppy wet. Pajama parties are always classic, esp. if nail polishing and mud masks are involved.

You can't seriously believe that NY women would give up dangerously high heels, no matter the reason; I mean, it's total trademark. And anyway, those women who wear white aerobics socks and sneakers with icky secretarial suits always have been, and will continue to be, awful duds.

Pyth, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sox n sneakers = hot
heels = not

mark s, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot 'revising', Nick.

Josh, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the folks at Puma *did* send free sneakers to all the staff at US Vogue to help them run in case Conde Nast was visited by terrorist attacks. So there you have it.

suzy, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everybody's walking around wearing sneakers and pajamas! it's TRUE!! it's like the washing machine thing. WHO KNEW?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i. I haven't noticed an increase in women wearing sneakers. Perhaps this is because I am a gay man who lacks a fetish for footwear, female or otherwise. (Women wearing white sneakers to work do catch my eye, only because the look is so patently ridiculous.)

ii. Pyjama parties? Nope, not heard of this either, though who knows what those crazy kids are doing these days what with their loud music and their fax machines and their hula hoops...

Michael Daddino, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are you going to show us your public domain karaoke machine now?

ethan, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gay men WITHOUT fetish for footwear = unthinkable!!!! Sorry, this is New York and anyway, didn't you see "Legally Blonde"?

Pyth, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, that last post was a casualty of my inebriated state. Please strike from the record and take no offense.

Pyth, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the sneaker thing is cool, though I don't know if it's true. My cousin always says, "You can trust a bitch in New Balance." The pajama thing is cute, but I hope it doesn't catch on too much, because they're too loose and I when I'm at any type of party and I look at a girl from behind, I don't want to see teddy bear pattern, I want to see BADOONKS. All ass and cheeks. BADOOGA DOONK.

Tomas, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pyth: ah, none taken. Honestly, the only foot fetish I know the gay men in my life to have is matching the color of one's shoes to one's belt -- actually, quite a sensible fetish, if such a thing exists.

, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are you going to show us your public domain karaoke machine now?

Must...RESIST...REFERENCE...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Free shoes. Provided for US Vogue. It's a sick world.

Mark C, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
What is going on in NY fashion that I should know about?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 March 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

All the stores have stocked heinous amounts of pink.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 22 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Shocking pink or cute pink?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Friend: "You're fashionably late."
Me: "I'm not fashionably anything."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 March 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You do definitely mean 'shocking' pink as distinct from 'awful' pink?

Fred Nerk, Saturday, 22 March 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Lynn Yaeger cribs from Harpers and predicts the following 5 trends for spring: preppie, '50s, surf, hardware, and chinoisserie:

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0310/yaeger.php

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 22 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Both types of pink. It's horrifying, I walk into stores and it's like I'm gettig attacked by cotton candy.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 22 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i love pink ally
why do you hate the things i love ?

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 22 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, I love my pale pink shirt- it's sort of the color of the inside of a nice seashell.

I have to laugh, however, at the "cropped cargo pants with drawstrings at the bottom" thing. I actually saw someone wearing them two days ago, and it was kind of scary looking- I can't see how they would flatter anyone.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 22 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I am your nemesis!

OH MY GOD the cargo pants with drawstring bottoms, what in the hell is that? Are they hiding things inside their pants?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 22 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw something in New York Magazine, I think, about how everyone's wearing tall boots over jeans, which defeats the purpose of those cute flares, but still looks great & tough.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 22 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna owns boots over jeans.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 22 March 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a pair of Gucci motorcycle-stylee boots and they are super fuckin' hottt over jeans, so I'm definitely saying this is v fashionable right now.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 22 March 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never liked this look. It always ends up looking puffy and 70-ish.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

buttless chaps are in!! (I am a trendsetter)

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 23 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

black is always a good choice in nyc.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 23 March 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there some article recently about how the pajama thing is taking off (or is this me in NYT-Sunday-Styles-as-limit-of-fashion-consciousness shockah)?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 23 March 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there are always girls running around in those awful matchy velour sweatsuits, I only wear those as pjs so it must be true.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 23 March 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"preppie, '50s, surf, hardware, and chinoisserie"
if 50s and surf stuff is coming back does that mean that we have skipped the early 90s retro period and started all over again?

i dont even understand what fashion is really... i doubt that Costume National or Helmut Lang are going to come out with hawaiian shirts and yet arent they still fashion?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 23 March 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Pink is for real, in Midtown at least.

Today I had lunch at a pink restaurant. At every single table was at least one -- in some cases, two -- woman wearing a very specific color of pink. The pink is like the color of a Ruby Red grapefruit, that is, of a salmon intensity but less yellow. By contrast, my sweater today is a pale baby pink. Was my face red.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

There was also a woman in front of Swisshotel wearing thee patented over-the-knee FAPboots(R) over jeans.

It was drizzling for about 45 minutes today, so in NY that means get out the S&M fly-fishing waders.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

two years ago wasn't it was all about magenta? now pink? CAN MAUVE FISHING BOOTS BE FAR OFF??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And why not?

http://www.tamarahenriques.com/sys-tmpl/nss-folder/pictures/striped.jpg

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate pink, it makes me look like the living dead. WHEN WILL THIS PEPTO BISMOL FASHION TREND END???

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, that's the color description I was looking for.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, it hasn't hit NY yet but next trend~green, right, Mary?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I look bad in green too! Where is the trend for blue?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

right now, in Mary's closet! (light blue)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls: Make me a fashionisto.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a cowboy hat.

Light blue is what I wear all the time. Also black but that never goes out of style.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a cowboy hat! But it's in VA.

I wear: black, blue, white. Always white pants. Always.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a complete liar.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Make me a fashionisto.

*poof* You are a (etc.)

Wannabe fash mag slag types spend all their time trying to bite your authenticically hip-and-street L.E.S. look as it is, Yance-three! Do you see?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I do have a cowboy hat though. An expensive one. I got it at the local Western Store in high school. Here's something I already regret posting to ILX, but who cares: I bought the cowboy hat because my mom and I were taking a line dancing class together.

I can't tell you how embarrassed I feel right now.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink is the new red, etc.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Y-3, please don't sell my Toronto Blue Jays jersey!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wuh wuh?

I still have that soccer jersey for you, f. If someone had bothered to show up to a certain someone's poker game on Sunday they coulda had it in time for soccer this week!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ok ok! This week for sure. I will purposely tip my hand so you won't have to sell my soccer jersey for $.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just being hard on you. It's fine. I won $30 on Sunday, and who knows how much of that you would've taken from me!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you can just add it to my ledger for when the Phillies win the East.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally needs a little accessory called *sock glue*.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sock glue?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Ally I see you are not reading the kneesock and sock threads carefully. For shame:) It is the means by which the Japanese schoolgirls keep up their loose socks.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! I kind of skipped over the loose socks because that would look too silly on me. Actually, my calves are kind of skinny, the bunchiness of the loose socks might help this and make them look heavier?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm maybe just stick with the nice soccer socks that stay up of their own accord. I hope the red and white ones don't sell out before I get up the nerve to buy them.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find red and white ones anywhere! I saw this great piccie in the Victoria's Secret catalog, the model had on boyshort underpants and a triangle bra in bright color, and red and white soccer socks with old school rollerskates. If I could find all of these items and learn how to rollerskate I'd wear that.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

We have to wear the Puma rollerskates that Phil-two linked to in light blue and pink. Hotel Venus has white with red stripes. Or, if you wanna join our girl gang -- I'm gonna get the svea red and white at flying a, felicity's gonna get green, so that leaves navy for you.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the hell is Drew, anyway, Stencil? I haven't seen him around here in ages.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They're at Flying A? I'm definitely in! Navy is my colour anyway. We should wear these when we go to Toronto.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Flying A, Ilx one stop shopping mart. Cool! If you see the red and white running low, pick me up some, k?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

To do list:

bring back 80s clothes from home
find Paul Frank patches
Get Mary's R&W sox @ Flying A

" Mary's pink cardigan " "

I'm glad that doesn't say "lap-dance for Yanc3."

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you are incorrigible

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I know. I'm sure it's gotten really old for everyone else at this point.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i will get to work on getting mr. prior's digits, and if that doesn't happen, rich garces. coolio?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to lapdance hstencil next time I see him, embarassingly and publically, to shut him up already.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a John Deere mesh white/green baseball cap I got in rural Maryland when I was shooting a documentary...

I have a Stetson-style cowboy had when I was in high-mountain cattle country Colorado when I was shooting a documentary...

I have a blue snap-button-down cowboy shirt on the same shoot.

I have a dog collar. Made for a person. I got that on a feautre we shot in Damask
(in Chelsea)...

In sum: I think the idea is used-trendy is good, but getting fetishwear from the real places is better. Especially with hats.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

my to do: stop finding ILx so charming and gtf back to work

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed! The problem is when you get your real cowboy hat in Arizona and you dad, who lives in Arizona, decides he wants to be a beautiful lady and start wearing leopard print cowboy hats, then you never get it back to your urban squallor-iffic home.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, could you all please stop being so interesting. Thx

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, Icalled it Tatu when we were telling bnw about it.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

what? isn't there a store in Paris called Tatu? Like high-fashion from a few seasons ago and with pink and white checkered shopping bags?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that Tati?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. thats right.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

NEW YORK, Dec. 5 -- Trend Report: Now we know what ballerinas are good for. Defections to ballet style are on the rise. The racks and shop windows of Madison and Fifth avenue are filled with full tulle skirts, criss-crossing wrap tops and shades of pale pink, cream, peach and black. Satin ribbon accents adorn everything from waists to shoes (see Victoria's Secret). Legwarmers and armwarmers tie into ballet style, naturally. Salutations to early adapter off-season winter ballerina Mary.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

that damn off duty ballerina look. I blame repeated showings of Center Stage on cable.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to wear my homemade leg warmers tonight, sob.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 6 December 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find my homemade legwarmers, and also, I've noticed some more girls at school wearing ones like mine now, so they're not as special anymore. It makes me sad.

kirsten (kirsten), Saturday, 6 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I fully expect to return from my trip decked in total NY fashion style. otherwise I risk being turned back at the border.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 6 December 2003 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, yeah, I saw someone the other day wearing a short peach layered skirt + black tights + black over-the-knee boots, it was super cool. I'd go for those skirts myself but they aren't flattering on me.. er.. that is the problem, trying to wear ballet style makes me feel perpetually guilty about having quit ballet in high school, 'cause if I hadn't quite maybe I'd be in terrific shape & could wear whatever I wanted.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 6 December 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I found my legwarmers! I wore them tonight and people kept staring. It was great.

kephmas, Saturday, 6 December 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I am getting sick of Milwaukee girls wearing legwarmers and especially of them making ones just like the ones I made last year, so I am going to create a new style. It's called Baker Chic, and it involves a lot of floury handprints and smears of honey and chocolate. It's really hot.
