mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen a trailer yet (this concert seems like forever ago doesn't it?) but it's been getting talk on local hip-hop and pop radio (duh) but also lots of hype on the atlanta altrock station - are fallout boy fans really stoked for a cody chestnutt concert film?

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

slocki i saw you come into the theater but didn't see you afterwards. we were about ten rows below you, near, uh, kardi, who wouldn't put his fucking blackberry away.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

the movie: it's basically a 50/50 split between regular doc footage and live concert footage, with the show unfolding chronologically around scenes detailing the inviting, organizing, anticipating and executing of the event. chappelle comes across as magnanimous, generous and (duh) very funny, especially in the scenes where he's just hanging out and visiting with people who live in the vicinity of the show. the performances are great too - dead prez "hip hop", talib "get by" and badu "back in the day" all kill. (the only artist i wasn't crazy about was jill scott, who seemed to miss the bit about the 'party', but whatever, ymmv).

gondry does a pretty amazing job congealing the film's weird little tangents into a full-bodied narrative, and in balancing some of the heavier moments (fred hampton jr's speech - "you better not edit this") with the laughs (chappelle freestyle battling a dude from the crowd, mamma jokes in rehearsal, etc etc).

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

badu was wicked

i thought it really struck a perfect balance between the doc stuff, the funny stuff, and the music stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's what I was wondering about; how tight the film is, vs how loose some of Dave's stand-up can be(I've seen him wander around stage and somehow result in an hour of extra time that isn't material/funny).

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm so excited.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

RT has this at 92%.

we're going tonight, and will probably have to get shitty seats in a packed house.

kingfish da notorious teletabby (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 3 March 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

oh ebert

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 March 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

he's so, so wrong about it being a "disorganized movie," too. wtf. hear of one eisenstein.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 March 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

He acknowledges he doesn't like hip hop but tries to fairly assess the film anyway. That's more than most people would bother to do. Truly, do you expect anyone who dislikes the music to enjoy the film because of the cinematography or the editing?

everything, Friday, 3 March 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

that's not what i was calling him out for!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 March 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Are there any scenes involving the conference call(s) between most of the artists, Gondry and Chappelle? There are bits of that interspersed between most of the tracks on the soundtrack. Some of them are hilarious.

Booklet for the soundtrack has a dedication to Dilla. They must've been printed very shortly after he passed.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 4 March 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I saw it today and liked it. I've never seen any Dave Chapelle comedy before.

I was pleased to see him eating at HA HA'S PIZZA in Yellow Springs, Ohio - I used to go there!!

i loved it!!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Sunday, 5 March 2006 07:05 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was great, but it did start to drag a little near the end.

I want the DVD to just have about 4 hours of Dave hangin' out, wandering around, practicing schtick with Mos Def, etc

kingfish, Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

hhaha i knew someone would bring up the ebert review

latebloomer: keeping his reputation for an intense on-set presence (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

1) I find a lot of rap nihilistic and negative, but the musicians featured here seemed accessible and positive; (2) Nevertheless I was pathetically grateful when Lauryn Hill and the Fugees sang "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and when many of the others sang what used to be called songs. Thank God for melody

HONGRO HONGRO HIPPOS

kingfish, Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 6 March 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Could have done with less Talib Kweli. The concert footage was about as good as you could expect (even though I don't care so much about the Roots, Kweli, Jill Scott, etc.), but I really loved all the backstage scenes when they were interviewing people from Ohio and the last shots when the drumline is getting ready to leave and they're hugging and talking with all the performers.
