There's a street near me called Farm Park View, which is a tiny cul de sac alongside a sixties shopping parade, with nothing but a long wall and some wheelie bins. No park, no farm and certainly no view.

(Inspired by the mention of Japan Crescent, London N4, on the Hornsey thread.)

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Bythesea road, Trowbridge. About as far inland as you can get.

Stoney Batter Mermaid Road in northern Delaware, USA. Not a mermaid in sight.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Plus, battering mermaids with rocks is wrong.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Norfolk House Road in Streatham. Surely, Norfolk Houses (like Norfolk Windmills) are nowhere near South London!

Cuair Crithlonracha (kate), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Nutsy, when you've basted the mermaids in Stoney Batter are you meant to fry them?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

There's a John Nash Drive near me, named after the venerable bisexual craziman mathematician - it has two schools on it; one for severely mentally handicapped kids and one for Educationally and Behaviourally Disturbed kids. So it's actually kind of apt.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Which reminds me, ken, that in the Goodies Book of Criminal Records, there's a mock-up of a solicitors' letter from a law firm whose address was 987 Short Lane. I remember that made me laugh a lot at the time.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine lives on a road called Ambush Street. Which, given the area he and I live in, is probably very appropriate.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Every time I see this thread I wish Bono had had the wit to write a song called "Where the Streets Have Inappropriate Names"

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Any street named Euclid that isn't completely straight.

(There's one in San Francisco and one in northwestern Chicago suburbia)

Cuair Crithlonracha (kate), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

You gotta dig the van as well.

Chalk Farm Road. Wrong on so many levels. Well, at least three.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, well what about Prince of Wales Road?!??!

It's not in Wales, there are no princes there, and errr... I bet Charles has never set foot on it!

Cuair Crithlonracha (kate), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I used to go past a Butt Hole Road every Sunday in Conisborough, South Yorkshire, UK. Mum didn't like us giggling about it on the way to church.

bobpeck (bobpeck), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Gaping Lane in Hitchin. I've always wanted to walk past with a marker pen and insert an "F" and a "G" in the appropriate places.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Fgaping Glane?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I grew up on Grand Boulevard, which was a tiny suburban street in a central NJ housing development. Not "grand" in the least.

I don't think King Arthur had much jurisdiction over Western Oregon, but you never know.

reddening (reddening), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

i live right off of "Level Road," which climbs a steep hill and is very hilly and windy in general.

it's not really that funny, though. sorry.

Titty Ho (in Raunds, Northamptonshire) is very disappointing.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 02:20 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
There's a Pleasant Road in Southend town centre - a lovely place for a summer picnic on a Friday night, I bet.

darren (darren), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

near my high school was the intersection of quakermeetinghouse road and cheese factory road. both the meeting house and the cheese factory are long vanished. i still think "cheese factory road" is one of the best road names ever.

For many years in downtown Cleveland, prior to the revitalization of the late 80s/early 90s, the street where a lot of hookers plied their wares was Prospect St.

phil d. (Phil D.), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Manchester, NH has a Come Street. I've never heard it pronounced, but I guess it's appropriate enough as it's a residential area and folks be coming there a lot.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Spadina Ave. in Toronto - not inappropriate per se, but sounds very close to something inappropriate.
I like pronouncing it "Spagina".

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I once lived on a Forest Range (Levenshulme, Manchester, UK), which had no trees at all. The roads around were all named after trees. They didn't have any trees on either.

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Aww, that reminds me of Avenue Road in Swiss Cottage.
-- Cuair Crithlonracha (masonicboo...), February 28th, 2006
