Hiring vans in London

Hi,
I have to hire a van to schlep some of my friend's stuff from Hammersmith to Mortlake.
Could anyone recommend me a good company?
Also, I'm a bit nervous about hiring anything big, but i've got to fit double mattresses in, what size of van should I be looking for?
I saw a small van from enterprise but it looked like no mattress would fit in at all...
Any ideas?
George

National have always been good for me.

hire it from somewhere a bit dodgy, it will be cheaper and less paperwork and also they won't care if you scratch it a bit (tho you will prob have to leave a deposit in case you do anything big). i was gonna recommend this place in whitechapel that will do you a huge van for 24 hours for £50 but if you're starting from hammersmith that would be a bit daft. actually it's prob had to close or change its name or something by now anyway.

If it helps, I hired from a company in Wandsworth, which is fairly nearby. They were called... Hunt Trucks and their service was absolutely fine. I even pranged the thing (a big black extra-long Transit that made me feel like George Peppard) and they only charged me half of what they could have for the repair.

I'm sure the company will tell you which van you need. If they try and foist a Luton on you, make absolutely sure that a Transit would be too small.

And don't be ridiculous, Emsk - pay an extra few quid and you'll have proper insurance, well-maintained vehicles and stuff. And you can be damn sure that if you scratch a dodgy van you'll be escorted to the cashpoint by some heavies before you can claim it was scratched before you got it, honest guv.

we did scratch it! they didn't give a fuck! and we had insurance!

Okay, take the risk because someone irresponsible didn't end up paying for their mistake! Why not!

live a little, mark

??? i am confused. there was nothing at all wrong with the van (actually i have remembered the one we scratched wasn't that one, but the one from an even dodgier place in mile end somewhere, still, apart from that story is exactly the same), all the insurance stuff was there, we got the deposit all back... ?

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Then what's dodgy about it?

that's quite a spacious van.

oh! got you. it just feels dodgy. there seem to be about 5 different businesses operated by the same lot of guys, wheelin' (i don't mean drug) dealin' vibe in their, um, office. tho not even slightly intimidating, come to think of it, and i am quite easily put on edge in certain surroundings. also dodgy little local place rather than big chain like easycar or whatever, cos in my/my friends' experience those big ones do whatever they can to fuck you over for as much as poss.

xpost what is she doing here?

Demonstrating the size of a double mattress.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Vans are just dodgy in general.

the last time i hired a car was from this place under a railway bridge and the office was a caravan. it was great!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

although, isn't easycar's euston "office" also some caravan at the train station car park?

I don't know how you can accuse Markelby of not living a little when he is the only person here to have gone out and CRASHED a huge fuck-off van.

I know a good man with a van, but he lives in Walthmastow so he may not be practical. Reliable and very cheap, and you get the man along with the van.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Who is your man with a van in Walthamstow and does he do house moves?
