Why is it snowing when the sun is shining brightly? Are we living in end times?

No, that's just something really NICE that happens once in a while.

It's gone now. I knew I should have gone out and run around in Lincolns Inn Fields while I had the chance.

I ate myself. I want a pie. (kate), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Right now, this mix of sunshine and snow in North Wales has a kind of end-of-the-world feel about it.

From my office window, i have a lovely view of the sun soaked snowy Pennines. If i had my camera, I’d post a pic.

Hmm. Due to updating, my lovely sunny and snowy north wales view now resembles a Lodon pea-souper circa 1955.

I got momentarily excited at the thought of a snowbow but then realised that that probably wouldn't work.

Yeah, we don't have snow here ever. You have to drive to go see it.

Sunny snow is wonderful, especially when you figure in the "it's not really cold when it snows" factor. The light is the best. This might be a really weird tangent, but I only really realized a few years ago that I'm kind of obsessed with different qualities of light, or at least that's how I wind up framing everything -- that's what art reminds me of, what I wind up trying to describe when I write fiction, how all my memories of being young are organized, and so on. And growing up in southern Colorado meant lots of sunny snow. Lots of sunny sun, too. It probably helped that my bedroom window faced out on open prairie and sky.

In conclusion: embrace the sunny snow. And if you come across any pictures of sunlight in southern Colorado, please let me know. (Like this one, which begins to capture the weird darkness of the shade indoors when the outside in sharp, unfiltered sun. I believe that's the arts center in Pueblo, Colorado, where I once served as a prop for a Jesse Jackson speech.)

Sorry, please continue talking about London.
