Key figure in guiding Saints to our only major honour, the FA Cup in 1976. RIP.

Heard the rumour at around midday. Very sad. Last player to score in every round of the FA Cup!

:(

RIP Ozzie, you were Chelsea through and through.

I saw him play a few times for real, and in my Chelsea dream team he's up front with Zola being supplied with ammo by Charlie Cooke, Pat Nevin and Alan Hudson. Of today's lot on Terry is in there, with Frank on the bench. The rest can fuck off - overpaid fucking showponies.

Look at the photo on the BBC link above - that's what footballers should look like, not like the ponces of today. Did you catch Osgood rolling over and over when he got kicked in the air by the likes of Norman Hunter and Tommy Smith? No chance. Again - RIP. Blue is The Colour.

I meant

...only Terry...

Tears on keybd.

I hope England will wear black armbands tonight.

'Did you catch Osgood rolling over and over when he got kicked in the air by the likes of Norman Hunter and Tommy Smith? '

Judging by the 70 replay, Ossie would have kicked em right back

Never saw him play, a few years to young, but met him on the way to Stockholm in 98. The whole plane was singing 'Born is the King of Stamford Bridge'. he was thoroughly embarrassed, but loved it all the same.

Great story!

I remember a game v Crystal Palace, possibly in 1974-ish, one of my first games, where he blasted one in from the edge of area. I think Keith Weller got one too. Also saw him when he briefly came back in around 1979.

One of the better things about the Roman era is that there's a greater appreciation of that 70s side. I can see him putting up some kind of permanent memorial to Ossie, which would never have happened five years ago. That was always Bates's weak point.

Pete W (peterw), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Osgood fell out with Bates IIRC.

Too young...

I loved his name above everything really - so rich with the mud and musk of the decade.

I think I might've seen him play - Nov '78 at Goodison, if he was back with Chelsea then. Don't remember much about the game other than we won 3-2 and all Goodison applauded Duncan McKenzie's early opener for Chelsea.

Were you there with your entire family, Michael?

Just thought it might make it more poignant if you were.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Just my Dad. I've a feeling Osgood wasn't back from the States then but, y'know, we were there - waiting for him.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

I remember Osgood well - a player I really liked to watch. RIP.

Anyone else read 'Ossie the Wizard'?
