Why does the business world not realize that *WALKING* is the most cogent protocol for interviewing a candidate for employment, or just having meetings?

I realize that, given the size of certain companies, and non-cooperative weather can obviously be obstacles here.

But even something that forces one to move a little bit?

I do some of my best work walking to get lunch. I like to work while subway-surfing (or even sitting?) too.

bit unfair on people who can't walk, innit?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 March 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

Since I'm obviously advocating that people with walking handicaps HAVE to walk in this instance... Darwinism, motherfuckers.

(Jesus, this was just a thought for the common case. I don't expect handicapped people to rise up, throw their wheelchairs and crutches into the open air, and say "Hallelujah! Hire me!")

It's harder to hide my drunk, though.

why does the ILX world not realise that *TAKING THE PISS* is the most cogent protocol for dealing with ... oh, fuck's sake, i'm sure you can fill it in from here.

had an interview two hours ago. walked around the site with the hiring manager and saw all the labs & all the tech.

Grimly, I'm not saying you had a good point by bringing up the walking disabled. I just think using the word "unfair" was a bit silly. The way you phrased it implied that, somehow, I made no allowances for walking-disabled people for this strategy, and that they deserved to be shut out for employment.

Da Na Not! (donut), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

... or what I meant to say is: that I expect companies to ONLY use the walking strategy for interviews. Of course that's not expected to happen ever, anyway.. but even if, I doubt people who can't walk would be denied just for that reason.

I'm not saying you DIDN'T have a good point, etc. etc. god, I need to watch my negatives in my statements

in my boss days, i sometimes used walks when i needed to have "serious talks" with people. i think it's a little relaxing, gets you out of the territorial thing of "step into my office." just made things less tense.

b-b-b-but i was just being silly! if i did have a good point, it was purely accidental ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

stupid. in most places, the boss will walk somewhere round the office. this is well-known to him / her. for the candidate, even getting there on time / not in a mess is daunting. The idea of strolling at an even pace, knowing which way to turn, how to avoid the bum, whether to pat the dog...the useful thing about an office is that it's a controlled environment.

alternatives - standing while you work, dancing in your chair
