coffee syrup is a local delicacy?

Autonomous University of Zacatecas (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 March 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't find a pic, but, I give you the Spuderito (I've never tried one, seems like a dumb idea).

Since 1965, Rick's Burgers has been dishing out a gooey fusion of grilled burgers and Mexican food to Pasadena locals and Caltech fast food junkies. There's nothing fancy about the place, but it doesn't need any extra frills, thanks to its most famous dish, The Spuderito. The memorably monikered concoction is flour tortilla stuffed with French fries, melted cheddar cheese and hot pepper sauce. It may not sound like much, but it's a mind-boggling, tasty concoction. The owner likes to brag that folks drive all the way from the beach to conquer their Spuderito cravings -- and at less than two bucks, how can anyone go wrong?

The francesinha is an Oporto delicacy which consists of jamming as much meat (including ham, sausages, etc.) as you can between two sauce-drenched pieces of bread. It is often accompanied by french fries, and an egg placed on top for maximum heart attack yummyness. I eat 'em at least twice a week:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/relojoaria/francesinha.jpg

The tripe tho, not so much fun. It's a local delicacy because there's a legend that says that, when this one king decided to go off to Africa to kill himself some infidels, the city of Oporto gave him all their meat, so tripe was the only thing they had left. Which is a pretty rubbish reason to keep it as a local delicacy now that we have the other stuff again:

There's a couple of restaurants around town that specialize in burgers bigger than your head (with timed "eat it all and get it free" challenges for the Vascular de Gamas of the world). Rockie's is the only one where cute girls on roller skates will serve them to you.

As a high schooler in suburban Pittsburgh, my lunch consisted exclusively of tastykake coffecakes accompanied by Fresca. It is a wonder I made it to adulthood.

Great thread! Here I was convinced that my father was the only person in the universe who ate Taylor pork roll. Over the years there have been times when he lived in places bereft of this delicay (including now--Alabama apparently hasn't discovered Taylor pork roll). During this times of want anyone visiting our family from pork roll enriched locales were required to bring some with them. I myself have packed frozen pork rolls into my suitcase to deliver to good ole dad.

My brother seems to have inherited pork roll love, but can't find any in his current home of Oakland or in the greater Bay area. He begs me to send it to him FedEx.
