GP registration, health care etc. do you know lots about it?

My foot is playing up after a football accident and i would like to have it seen to (just to find out what happened).

I guess, my GP would be the first place to go? Except despite having lived in london for 3 years my GP is still registered in Milton Keynes, which isn't very convenient.

So.. what do you reckon i should do? register with a GP ASAP and book an appointment? Will this take absolutely ages?

A+E is out of the question because it really doesn't seem immediately pressing (i can still walk around and run albeit a little awkwardly). Are there maybe some walk-in (irony?) centres that I can go to?

It's been a lingering problem for a year or so and I haven't had it looked at, but a couple of incidences over the past month had aggrevated it i think and I feel i really ought to get it checked out.

any ideas?

It's kind of a postcode lottery.

In Bloomsbury, I registered with a GP fairly quickly, but had to wait ages for an appointment. In Streatham, I had to wait because they were only signing up new patients on certain days of the week, but as soon as I was registered, I was seen that day, and given a referral within a week.

In my experience, clinics (where they have several GPs and nurses and specialists all gathered together in the same practice) tend to be better and quicker than individual GPs. You'll get seen quicker, and specialise problems with often get referred in-house rather than you going on a waiting list for a nearby hospital.

There was something on the NHS website, about find the nearest GP or clinic to you, which was very useful.

Also, don't delay, do it quickly - because the sooner you do it, the more quickly your medical records will get transferred. It's really neither difficult nor traumatic.

aha yes! thank you! i just found a few around my place. and apparently i need to get some kind of form which i can do tomorrow and i have my NHS number.

and supposedly, i can drop in to a GP place even if i'm not registered to receive treatment for up to 14 days. well i'll go and find the one by my house tomorrow morning to find out!

Thanks!

i hope my foot holds out til then (although i did have another game just last night with it being dodgy, and played a blinder)

I went to get a dodgy ankle (random dancing incident - came down wrong from Busted jump) looked at, and they gave me these amazing anti-inflammatory pills which had me up and jumping about again in a few days! The magic of modern science!

oh well you see, i have a dodgy ankle too, and some MAGIC COLD PAIN RELIEF SPRAY had got me up and running (i played footie yesterday!), but the problem is when i hurt it, i heard a crack, and i don't know whether that means it's something more serious than just like dislocating a joint or anything.

Well, in that case, they will probably send you for a scan of some kind.

(I had the magic scan, but they just said "well, you had some kind of old sports injury which has healed funny" and I said DANCING!!! it was DANCING because I MORALLY DISAPPROVE OF SPORT!!! like some kind of weird inverse of ... what was that film called anyway, where the new kid bring crazy, ungodly DANCING into the uber-conservative neighbour hood?)

see this is why i'm worried... i don't want this new injury to have funnily healed by the time i got to do a scan! but i guess there's no other way but to just get through asap.

i'm a bit worried as this is the second time someone has busted their foot at an ILX kickabout. most of me aches but fortunately nothing broken, sprained or whatever. i do need to register with a local GP tho.
