Terms of Endearment (not the movie, but actual endearments)

There must be a million of these.

- my little passion flower
- lambie pie
- sweetheart
- snugglepuss
- my little cabbage leaf
- sugar buns

We don't just use them for our lovers, but also for our young children.

- punkin
- kidderoo
- lil squirt

I'm interested most in the terms you actually use in real life to people you love, or terms you have heard used in real life situations - as opposed to the ones you heard on tv, read in a book, or those you make up as a joke to mock this thread, my little mockingbirds.

So let's hear it. (BTW, we use them for our pets, too, and those are acceptable here as well.)

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

monkey
li'l
kid
punk
poppet

actually, any word that pops into my head - but those frequently do.

Sweet pea

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

I like 'poppet' but have never had the courage to try it out. It would probably just sound sarcastic.

Couples who use lots of terms of endearment fill me with disgust. Perhaps I am just jealous.

I think some people are just so endearing that you can't speak to them without using terms of endearment. But using them arbitrarily is bad and annoying.

I sometimes call my sister 'kitten', but that is because she really reminds me of a kitten.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

I think that every single time I've ever used a TOE, it's been veiled contempt.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't used many TsOE romantically, but platonically there's: punkin, kitten, kid(s), dear, ducks, babe, luv, my little tuff pastry, sweetpea, lambkin. I, too, love "poppet", will have to see if I can work it in.

Used on me: petal, lola, lulu, petunia, kid.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

OMG, how could I forget "doll" -- use it all the time.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

The one I use for my beloved, meted out once a year as a code name of sorts: panserbjorne. Which suits him. I used to refer to him as "my particular favorite" (rather than boyfriend), but my daughter put a stop to that.

My children, when small, were known as "beekers", after the muppet show character. On our blog, the collective offspring are now referred to as i principi and le principesse.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

i love endearment. i try to invent some new terms sometimes, just to keep things fresh. that said, here are names i use (or hear) fairly regularly:

sweet _____ (cheeks, meat, cakes, baby, etc.)
baby
lover (sometimes mockingly, sometimes not)
sweet pea
sugar ____ (cake & lips are most frequent)

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

my dog:

little bad manny
my rotten one
the tiny little gentleman in the white woollen coat

estela (estela), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

My mother always called me honey girl or honey child (sometimes honey chile). But I'm lazy so everyone is just honey or sweetie.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

This thread made me remember Don't Ever Call Your Sweetheart By His Name. Esp. sugarlips, because of rhyming with motorhips :)

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

This thread made me realise I'm nauseating:

Checkens
Chickarnis
Little bee
Pickle/sweet pickle
Punkass
Creature
Pippin
Egg
coconutcake

Some are used for specific people, so are sort of nicknames, really. Coconutcake stopped being used when I realised that my 9-year-old nephew would probably not like it as much as he might have when he was 2.

I like to call people SUGAR SHANKS.

I also like the -face suffix. Sweetface (term of endearmant for me man), niceface, cuteface, dollface, awesomeface. Also works for bad: jerkface, the only insult I could call anyone forever, up into college. Somewhere I started referring to Sting exclusively as Hilarious Head.

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sting's is not a term of endearment, BTW.

poppet is good, yes. i used to HAET it which is perhaps why i like it now

t0dd swiss, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

I was mostly kidding, Abbott, but it can be bro appropriate.

milo z, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

I just know folks who end every sentence w/it. OTOH, I used to sing "Shiiit bi-i-i-i-i-itch" in seven descending notes every time I opened the door to greet the roomies. Very warm joke, it was.

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

I liked to call my kitties "little chickens."

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Personally, I use
Puddin' (for all friends)
Beardo (for boyfriend)
Sugarlumpin' (for specific really old friends)

Andi Mags, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhere I started referring to Sting exclusively as Hilarious Head.

That's genius. For some reason some friends of mine used to call Deanna Troi on TNG "Trixie", so that's what we've always called her.

For Mister Monkey: Monkey. This can be confusing when my brother and his wife around because she also calls my brother Monkey. But we are both Monkey in our house.

For the dogs: Ninos, or puppaninos.

For the cats: Mittens. Even though neither of them has mittens. Also pindys.

Everyone else is chicken.

i call the people i care about kid. me and the girl i used to live with used to call each other doll. i used to call the dog "little man".

those pretty much cover it.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah kid is great, 'though I worry that it sounds condescending.

G00blar, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

i would probably worry about that too if i weren't so much better than everyone else.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I call my nephew bubs. Friends, family, significant others: sweetie, or dear.

ken c, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

We rarely call each other by name, we always use the following (yes, we're one of those 'smug' couples)

peanut
pumpkin
petal
biscuit
sweetie
sweetpea
sweetcheeks
poppet
dear (this one cracks our friends up)
darling
babe
pet
baby
lover
lover-love
pumper
shagger
petal-boat (mispelt sign on a greek beach that we've adopted)
crumpet

I'm sure there are many more. I also call the girls in the work pet, doll, love and chick. If I was a guy I'd get slapped.

rumpie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hot pocket

That's good.

Jordan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

My favorites are names you call your kids that are all well and good until around age 7 when suddenly it is red-faceningly embarassing for them. Like POOKIE or LITTLE MAN.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I saw a father calling his little bot (say, 4 years old) 'honey' today in the supermarket. I like that.

G00blar, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

hehe boy

G00blar, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I like women who call everyone honey constantly, to the point where it becomes a bit of punctuation. See "sug" as said by Ms. Gribble in King of the Hill.

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I call the cats: Pumpkinheads or Bozos.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

my dog never got embarrassed by being called little man. : (

judging by the tail wagging, he really seemed to dig it.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I call my son "Peanut" or "Monkey Man" a lot; my daughter gets called "Bean," "J," "Little J" or occasionally "Bella." Husband gets called "dear," "honey," or one of a couple nicknames that might or might not make sense to anyone else - "Marathon" or "Scrubs." Also, I recently started calling my best friend "Petty Crime."

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I was often, and am still, called "putzie" by my mother. "put-zee" not "putz-ee."

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

I call my friend Satch or Satchmo, I don't know how that one got started since she is a wee redhead spattered in freckles. Everyone else calls her The Russian, also unknown origin.
