Audiobooks and iPods

How do you listen to audiobooks on the ipod? I have 2 computers, 1 at home which isn't connected to the internet, and 1 at work that is...I use the work one to download podcasts & audiobooks, while the one at home has my entire music library so is therefore the one my ipod is registered to or whatever... but I can't seem to get the audiobooks to move from my library to the ipod!

I read somewhere in the pdf user manual that you can download audiobooks from audible.com--I assume that makes it easier, but shouldn't there be a way to listen to audiobooks w/o using the apple-recommended site?

This whole...designated library thing and all that crap to supposedly not contribute to rampant illegal music downloading is a big pain.

What?

Audible's audiobooks have some special features ("bookmarking") that you can cause any M4A to have by changing the extension, I think. And I think the iPod has a special "Audiobooks" category for it. But... yeah, I am not sure what the problem is here. They are just like any other files, surely? Where are you getting these audiobooks?

It sounds like the problem is more that this person is syncing the iPod to the non-internet computer with the music library, and then having problems loading just the audiobooks from the other one.

Oh, yeah. If your iPod is syncing automatically to one computer, then it isn't going to let you put things onto it from another computer. Do it all manually.

How do I do it manually?

I thought it just involved checking the box for the file on the library on my comp and then clicking 'update ipod,' but the audiobook has failed to appear on my ipod after many tries.

Thanks...

Preferences -> Update manually. Something like that.

Then you need to drag the files or albums you want onto your iPod. Play around with it, you'll get the idea. But if you set it up to "sync" again, then it will delete all the files that aren't on your home computer.

Or, wait, iPods have little "preference" buttons on the bottom of iTunes these days, don't they? It's probably there. I don't feel like plugging mine in right now to test, sorry.

Ahhh....you have to drag it.

Thanks!

five years pass...

Okay, what's the best streaming app for listening to books over my phone? Is there an Audible subscription or something where I can just pay so much and hear whatever for a month?

eight months pass...

I have never listened to audiobooks. Any recommendations for free books from libravox to listen to?

not from librivox but if you google around, a few people have downloads for the cassette-version of William Gibson's 'Neuromancer' floating around if you're a fan...that's probably my favorite audiobook of all time. Gibson reads it...he has a weird reading style, but it's really cool if you can find the links.

I originally got mine off gre3ylodge
