It's been photoshopped. The larger lady was there in the original shot but the smaller women have been added later. They are too far away from that back wall to be casting such hard shadows on it (Particularly evident around their hats)

I've seen counters that high, usually the stove is on the other side, so you don't want it low. It's for passing things between rooms, or just "opening up" the kitchen.
