Habitat for Humanity needs help.

does the AmeriCorps still exist, or did Dubya completely defund it?

USAF did alright by me for this purpose.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Just move to New Orleans and get a job, that would be helping.

You're bound to find some nude models for your "art" on Bourbon Street.

AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps both require a college degree, from what I've heard.

USAF started making people go through a real boot camp recently, which I'm sure is a disappointment to many.

Not ALL AmeriCorps programs require a degree, to my understanding.

I feel your malaise. I am half a semester short of finishing school FER EVAH and the last thing I want to do is finish the fucker. Just get me outta here.

My advice is thus:
1) Suck it up, and finish the degree. It will be so much easier now than any time in the future. And ANY degree shows that you are trainable and makes getting a job that much easier.
2) Then pick something like Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Teach for America (my favorite - Mississippi Delta '98!) or something and travel to a whole other part of the country. It could be an AWESOME experience for you.

Don't just up and leave what you are so close to finishing. Seriously.

brad pitt did that - worked out ok for him! i say go for it!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Just finish it. There are situations -- most of them involving potential employers -- where having 7/8ths of a college education can look worse than having none at all: it lets people conclude you're a big unreliable quitter who lacks the fortitude to actually work your way through an unpleasant situation. And when the situation you couldn't work through isn't terminal illness but rather, umm, "college," that doesn't look so flattering. Even if you have real hardships and problems that are giving you trouble.

The Legionnaire is a volunteer.

Most often, he has come to the Legion to escape from his past.

Generally, he has joined because of a personal or family crisis or an upheaval in his social or political life. Striking examples of this can be found in the mass enlistment of Alsatians after 1871, of Spaniards in 1939 and of Eastern Europeans after 1945.

For others, those who are unable to deal with the limitations of a middle-class life, the Legion represents a life of adventure.

In the enlistment procedure, selection is very tough. Many candidates are turned down for medical reasons, or after a thorough study of their individual cases. The legionnaire is seldom an angel but never a criminal.

Once he has joined, under an assumed name if he wishes, the legionnaire enjoys an unequaled protection for as long as he serves, because of the anonymity rule. Only he can decide when to break it.

i just want to go some where and start over. is this even possible?

That's what America is all about, isn't it?

Why wouldn't it be possible? Of course it's possible. Now, if you have loans/debts, that might put some limitations, but not that many.

20 credits is how many semesters? I don't know, if you can finish it's better to finish, but if you can't, you can't.

20 credits is a little over one full semester in most schools!

my senior semester in undergrad was 20 credits.

Help is needed in New Orleans - but there's no affordable place to live (for the level of work you can get.)

Finish school, even if it's the easiest degree you can get and you get all C's. Just finish. Then focus on what you're going to do next.

Also, I think there's a dog rescue ranch in New Mexico or somewhere like that. You could proably live in a car and work with dogs all day.

im just so sick of living a life i hate

I think you're having a hard day, or maybe are depressed, which might have something to do with your situation, and MIGHT NOT. Are you eating regular meals? Sleeping? Not going overboard with drink, etc? Things may not seem so overwhelmingly bad if you just tweak one or two of those things.
It's never a bad thing to finish school. It's not like you'll miss your big chance.

ten months pass...
So what happened to logged out?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

I hope he's happy with his choice.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

I hope he's ok, but I am thrilled with the tiger info. Tigers! Room and board and TIGERS!
Also, is there a reason all of these old threads are being revived? it confuses small brains like mine....

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

random button. sorry :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, seriously what would have been wrong with finishing the 20 credits and THEN starting your life over?

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

NOLA is pretty rough these days. I'm not sure it would be the best place for a random outsider to be.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I have the same feeling but sometimes you just *have* to. A way to break with your past, a way to not have to drag your past with you? I don't know...

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

No, really! it's not like this is the only ancient thread that has been revived!
I think I'm just reading way too many threads. And getting duped, until I see the dateline.
I always want to weigh in! In a debate that happened in 2003!
No worries, Nathalie. I'll sort it out eventually.
