Will a Porn Actor ever become a real Movie Star?

This is totally not to knock the efforts of those acting in the porn business - the stuff they go through is pretty insane. But will someone like Asia Carrera, Jenna Jameson, Peter North or Ron Jeremy ever REALLY make it as a legit, mainstream movie actor? What will it take?

Anecdotal appearances aside - Jeremy's role in "The Boondock Saints", Asia's appearance in "The Big Lebowski".

Asia Carrera was in Lebowski as... uhm... a porn star. Girl's got quite a range.

It would probably hinge on them getting a fairly large part (snigger) in some kind of teen ('gross-out'?) film, where they actually put in a good performance... without anyone brave enough to give them a chance at a serious part straight away (and this is even having gotten past their potential morals/ethics), it's more likely to be a gradual process.

... and Jeff Bridges was in Lebowski as a dope-addled 70s throwback, so?

Schwarzenegger was in some 70's porn IIRC

Didn't Marilyn Chambers do a couple of straight movies in the 70s/early 80s before returning to porn?

Lurker McLurkerstein, Friday, 10 March 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

She was in "Rabid" but that was after she'd done porn

I could see horror flicks as being a good post-porn-start.

Some would say that Ron Jeremy is the closest thing, doing little character actor bits here & there. The docu on him goes into this very topic.

Traci Lords is the obvious answer here. To my knowledge no one else has managed to have much more than a few very minor parts here and there and I assume you are not counting folks like Stallone and Arnold who did some porn bits before breaking big.

Well, to be 'in' a porn film wouldn't be enough.

They'd have to be seen to be 'in', if you see what I mean. (or having someone in, etc)

Otherwise, someone adding some news footage would make the Queen a porn actor.

ALthough, she's not done much mainstream either.

JENNY MCCARTHY?

In Germany, there's Gina Wild (now using her real name, Michaela Schaffrath) who's doing well in B movies and as a general "famous for her fame" type celebrity, and Sibel Kekilli, whose porno past came to light after winning Best Actress at the Berlinalle for "Gegen die Wand" two or so years ago.

Sly Stallone did some stag reels, I think.

If you're including people like Jenny McCarty, who was a Playboy Playmate, there's tons of these people who've been in mainstream movies.
I imagine Big Loud Mountain Ape is referring to people who've done actual porn, not just posed for naked pictures.

In the 70s, Jamie Gillis was a big porn star who went on to be in mainstream movies, like "Nighthawks" with the aforementioned Stallone (who was not in real porn, just softcore stuff - like Schwarzenegger and Madonna, who was in a softcore movie with an S&M theme called "A Certain Sacrifice"). But there hasn't been anyone who's become a mainstream *star* yet.

My German examples were both in hardcore, as a Google image search will show. Whoopsy!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 10 March 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure how or if Marilyn Monroe fits into all of this, but she does come to mind. Porn in her day wasn't on the big screen and mass home video didn't exist anywhere near today's level. I would think x-rated notoriety had to have been a bit more subdued in those times. But she was very well known for her photo shoots and did perform in a hardcore loop or two. Odds are, in today's world, she would have done mostly hardcore and been quickly written off.
