President Bush, his now-arrested advisor Claude Allen and further evidence of follies

He sure knows how to pick 'em.

US President George W Bush's former political adviser has been charged with allegedly stealing more than $5,000 (£2,900) from department stores.

The president said he was "shocked" and "sad" on hearing the news about Claude Allen, who resigned abruptly as his domestic policy adviser in February.

The Montgomery County police report

The Target Loss Prevention Manger contacted Montgomery County Police and through the police investigation it was learned that Allen had been receiving refunds in an amount exceeding $5,000 during last year. Some of the fraudulent returns were made at Target stores and some at Hecht’s stores. He would buy items, take them out to his car, and return to the store with the receipt. He would select the same items he had just purchased, and then return them for a refund. Allen is known to have conducted approximately 25 of these types of refunds, having the money credited to his credit cards.

Throughout 2005 he obtained refunds for items ranging from clothing, a Bose theater system, stereo equipment, and photo printer to items valued only at $2.50.

Okay, who the fuck tries to rip off Target for something worth $2.50?

Focus on the Family gushing over Claude's original appointment and then regretting to see him resign shortly before this all came out.

"We applauded his appointment to the Bush White House, and now we are sad to see him leave," Brandt said. "He has championed the values and programs that we hold dear — he has been a stalwart for marriage, for family, for abstinence education and for the sanctity of life. He has been unwavering in his dedication to the things that our constituents value."

But will they post something now saying, "Um, er, well, we support shoplifting too"?

Geez: that sounds like actual thrill-seeking kleptomania.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

*sigh*

dude having a serious personal problem = lame excuse for partisan glee, Ned.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Personally I'd say more misanthropic glee over the state of the species.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

To Ned's defense, at least it wasn't a serious personal problem that led to several thousand people dying. I wouldn't call it "glee" as much as "relative partisan ribbing".

..or at least directly lead, etc.

I do feel sorry for the fellow - and amazing to hear the resurgance of compassionate conservatism...

"When I heard the story last night, I was shocked, and my first reaction was one of disappointment, deep disappointment - if it's true - that we were not fully informed," Mr Bush said on Saturday.

"Shortly thereafter, I felt really sad for the Allen family."

You can almost see his face going from angry to sad...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

And like we wouldn't be hearing the end of it ever if it had been, say, Obama.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

York at NRO, meanwhile, has his thoughts:

We know now that Montgomery County Police contacted the White House in January with some sort of inquiry about Allen. The issue reached the highest levels of the White House staff, and Allen discussed it with chief of staff Andrew Card and counsel Harriet Miers. He reportedly told them that it was just some sort of misunderstanding involving his credit card.

Right now, it is not clear whether the president knew about the problem at the time, but Bush said on Saturday that, "If the allegations are true, Claude Allen did not tell my chief of staff and legal counsel the truth, and that's deeply disappointing."

Of course it is reasonable to believe that Allen, if the charges against him are true, might well have lied about it to his employers. But White House officials surely must have put two and two together when, a few weeks after the call from Montgomery County Police, Allen suddenly resigned. So why, then, did the White House claim so confidently that Allen simply wanted to spend more time with his family?

The answer to the rhetorical question is obvious enough; question is if the intended audience gets the meaning of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Family has mad cache of plastic tchotchkes he can steal and sell on eBay for a dollar a pop, no reserve.

(Sorry if I'm not being kinder to the fellow kleptomaniacs of the world, but I had one as a roommate in college... and kleptomaniacs are not necessarily always people to be pitied.. sorry.)

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I had forgotten that moron who plagued you. What a dip!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

lame excuse for partisan glee

If Focus on the Family and other RRW groups didn't harp so much on the moral iniquity of others and their own righteous upstandingness against the forces of relativistic depravity, then the grounds for such glee would be considerably undercut, you know.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Rather.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah you guys, I know. It's just that a group of people (the left, among whose numbers I count myself) that likes to think of itself as* morally and ethically above its opponents would do well to avoid such morally & ethically icky stances as gloating over the misfortune of others. If for no reason other than the rather obvious one: that this sort of thing isn't partisan, it's human, and you'll howl like wounded animals when the shoe's on the other foot - as it surely will be, again & again, karma being a bitch 'n' all.

What this means, I guess: the right repulses me, but the left disappoints me, and while I can get over revulsion - it's just a sensation - disappointment's a lasting ache.

*I should rather say "revels in thinking of itself as" here

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

you'll howl like wounded animals when the shoe's on the other foot

Actually I'd probably be even *more* scathing in that case.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 March 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

(And as it Allen's lawyer is doing his client no favors at all here. Almost a month and a half after this incident, and well away from any publicity at all, and he's still taking a "It was just a misunderstanding and we just want to talk to Target's lawyers" stance. Dude, you've HAD your time!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 March 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Geez: that sounds like actual thrill-seeking kleptomania.

I dunno, actual kelptomania is pretty rare. DSM-IV says only 5% of shoplifters actally have kleptomania...it's a complusive thing where the stealing's just to relieve pressure rather than for actual gain or need of the objects. This guy definitely had a specific scheme, at only two stores, stealing objects he'd already bought to get refunds. That just sounds like a really lame way to get extra money, not a specific compulsive behavior. If you're dumb enough to use your credit card for this kind of a scheme, you've earned your own arrest soon enough.

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 12 March 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

So the weird rumor getting traction today is that it was Claude's evil twin brother who did this and blamed Claude.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Rumor source?

(PLEASE SAY IT WAS NRO PLEASE SAY IT WAS NRO)

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Oddly enough, The New York Times and NPR.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

haha i'm so broke right now the 1st thing i thought was "shit that's not a bad little scheme..."

geoff (gcannon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Just get $$$ back, not a credit card.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

So does that mean "I want to spend more time with my family" == "I must keep much closer tabs on my twin bro"?

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Hahahah, perhaps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

So the weird rumor getting traction today is that it was Claude's evil twin brother who did this and blamed Claude.

maybe this isn't so strange, it would explain the in-store videotape and also Claude's "I know nooootheeng" aka the Sgt Schultz defense.

sad. and not worth dwelling on if only because the Bush admin will provide us with something better to slam, probably in a few hours.
