:-(

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 13 March 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

I was just talking about him yesterday, about how it would be great if he could last until next year for the 40th anniversary of winning the European Cup.

RIP Jinky

Not entirely unexpected, but still... :-(

I shed a wee tear at work when I heard the news this morning, and again when reading the tributes in the paper. One of the greatest. I once had the privilege of seeing him play - it was a charity thing to celebrate the closing of the Jungle. He scored a belter off the side of his boot from about 30 yards out. He must have been nearly fifty, yet he still had class. I'm glad I got the chance.

God bless you, Jinky.

I saw some footage of JJ on the news last night, and he was like a little dog running around with the ball.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy Johnstone, Celtic, 23 caps
Willie Henderson, Rangers, 29 caps

That Willie Henderson must have been some player, eh? Better than Jimmy Johnstone obviously...

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Willie Henderson was some player, as his close friend Jimmy Johnstone would be the first to tell you.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

... not remotely in the same class as Johnstone tho

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

As his good friend Willie Henderson would be the first to admit :-)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

What happens if they all get booked?

Celtic players to all wear seven

Celtic players will all wear the number seven on their shorts in Sunday's CIS Cup final as a tribute to club legend Jimmy Johnstone.
Johnstone died on Monday, at the age of 61, after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

There will also be a minute's applause ahead of the final against Dunfermline at Hampden Park.

"The club have been allowed to wear the iconic number seven on their shorts," said Celtic chief Peter Lawwell.

He added: "In Jimmy's playing days, players only wore numbers on their shorts so this is a fitting tribute.

"We have also agreed with the league that we will have a one minute of applause before the game, which will sum Jimmy's vibrancy up more than a silence."

Lawwell added that Celtic have "developed a number of ideas to pay tribute to Jimmy", at their next home game against Inverness, next Wednesday.

It's a bit of a daft idea but I'm sure Jimmy would have loved it!

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

They will wear their usual squad numbers on their shirts.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy Johnstone v Bobby Moore, Wembley 1967

Jimmy was a sub against the then World Champions in '67

Moore: Will they let you play when you grow up?

Jinky: Fuck off blondie, they're keeping me for the hard games.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Teh LOLZ!

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oh right, just shorts.

Disappointing.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

No new tribute programme on the telly like what they did when George Best died, but there will be a repeat of The Lord of The Wing (which I've got anyway) on BBC Scotland on Friday night.

Best Jinky story I read today = he's shit scared of flying and he doesn't want to go to the return leg of a game over in Belgrade. Jock Stein promises him he can stay at home if Celtic win by four goals. He promptly scores two and sets two up, allegedly celebrating the last by shouting "I don't have to go now". Stein grudgingly let him away with it.

Big Jock loved the wee man
