HOW TO REALLY ANNOY THE CAPTURED TALIBANERS

THE BEST PUNISHMENT WOULD BE TO CONDUCT ILSAMIC SERVICES AT THE CAMP REALLY STUPIDLY , AND MESS UP THE PRAYERS AND STUFF, AND PRETEND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING BUT REALLY JUST BE MAKING IT ALL UP.

So blindfolding them, binding their hands and feet, holding them in cages, and denying them rights under the Geneva Convention isn't quite enought then Mike?

stevo, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Combining the two would make them explode with rage.

Jonnie, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'M NOT SAYING IT ISNT ALREADY UNCOMFOTRABLE. I JUST THINK IT WOULD BE EXTRA ANNOYING

I like the "Ilsamic" typo, which conjures up images of either (a) the album Nas would make after becoming a Muslim, or (b) some weird religious variant involving Allah and lots of balsamic vinegar.

Oh dear.

Anyway, about the whole shackling up idiocy (which it is) -- UK reps said the UK citizens they talked to weren't complaining. Hm. Quote from BBC article:

The men, who are among 144 suspects being detained at Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo Bay, are said to have been treated well and are in "good physical health".

The Britons were "able to speak freely and without inhibition" about their conditions, he said.

He added that they had been in contact with Red Cross workers and British officials were passing messages on to their families at their request.

"There were no gags, no goggles, no ear muffs and no shackles while they were in their cells. They only wear shackles when they are outside their cells."

He said detainees "get three meals a day", including a "pre-packed Islamic meal for lunch", as much water as they need and daily medical checks.

"The Red Cross is arranging for them to have copies of the Koran," he added.

"They have also been provided with washing materials, and calls to prayer are being broadcast over the camp public address system."

Now this is all well and good if true, but what about all the ones in the camp who don't have concerned governments looking after them? And why only an Islamic lunch? What, is dinner nothing but pork rinds?

As it stands, part of me is perversely amused by the realpolitik practiced here -- "Can't have them on US soil because of that nasty legal rights stuff? No problem! Cuba!" -- and the rest of me is as usual disgusted by it all. 6 to 5 odds nobody being held there had any damn thing to do with 9/11.

There was a rather good looking female corporal interviewed on TV tonight. If that doesn't annoy the Taliban, it's difficult to know what would. She didn't have a beard either.

letter in the guardian today — which i only skim read on the bus — suggested that a problem facing the anti-al qaeda alliance is that the nature of 9-11 and of international law as it stands is that strictly speaking some of its architects may be beyond ANY legal reach as it's currently formulated. ie they could be opicked up and thrown in pokey, but in any US court they would get off, despite guilt, because al qaeda is not a nation-state, and its actual institutional chain of responsiblity is not yet established (possibly deliberately in re this very difficulty, tho i suspect it's an artefact of felxibility and interanl security) . Which is why everything seems to be being made up as it goes along: we are unfortunately in FRONTIER TERRITORY currently, and law- making is inevitably — perhaps even necessarily? — a junior partner to gun- slinging. (It depresses me when kneejerk anti-Americans make snidey remarks abt "John Wayne" attitude usw: nowhere were the dialectics of frontier justice more exactingly explored than in the Western.)

Apart from an uncomfortable ride to Cuba it doesn't seem to me that they're being badly treated, obviously the camp isn't quite the Savoy but it certainly isn't Andersonville .

DG, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr Noodles, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They could employ Lydia Lunch as the camp's "Tea Lady".
