s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

hi

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

hi dere.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, sure - the long-term aftermath is fine.

Who are CAN and why is everyone talking about them?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

I like this album, it's geniunely groovy.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Mark -- how is MTL?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's rainy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

dudes i think im coming to chicago (my first time) for a few days in early june! anyone wanna go record shopping/drink some beers in three months? any good shows b/w 6/7 and 6/10?

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

and yeah tago mago kicks ass

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Who are CAN and why is everyone talking about them?

Can is the ultimate Krautrock band. And Tago Mago is their best album.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I always feel like I should like Can more than I do. Someone just burned me Soundtracks so I should go listen to that and report back, but too much of the Can I've heard so far is like some formless hippie jam session. I forget what album it's on, but "Spoon" is good.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

a city thread in its early stages like this feels like some sort of community meeting where everyone's just arriving and taking off their coats.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Btw, you guys, I have already told Pete via Friendster that I'm down with hanging out in early June -- but I don't know anything that's going on yet. But we'll plan an outing, for sure.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

a city thread in its early stages like this feels like some sort of community meeting where everyone's just arriving and taking off their coats.

It's more like we all got really worked up earlier in the day that we're now treating this as a respite.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

jmc, soundtracks is my traditional favorite can album. it totally rocks, esp "soul desert" and "tango whiskeyman" and "dont turn on the light..." and "mother sky." so, most of the album.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

too much of the Can I've heard so far is like some formless hippie jam session.

Jam session maybe, but not hippie, and far from formless. Amanda nailed it when she said "funky."

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

No, wait, "groovy." Either way.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, groovy. A steady, undulating groove. When I think funky I think of something tighter, this is loose and groovy.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Either way, it's hard to call it "noodling."

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Can wasn't a hippie band? It doesn't have to be a pejorative, you know.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Is that not the best word? Groovy. I really like the combination of v+y. Divvy. Skeevy. Groovy. Vy. It looks like a letter and it's child with the capital V and the lowercase y.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, see I do think there's noodling, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

"paperhouse" (first on TM) was the first can song i ever heard, and still might be my favorite. its super-subtle and understated, but theres just this awesome atmosphere to it. it sounds way more like its from another planet than 99% of stuff descirbed that way.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, new thread.

I bought one Can album but I didn't really get into it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

There was, yes, unexpected noodling.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

dude theres nothing wrong with a little noodle

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, see I do think there's noodling, though.

So did Faust.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

I like noodling in the right context. Like NY and Crazy Horse.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Built to Spill noodle like crazy!

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, new chicago thread. ooh, CAN. (i'm doing the non-chicagoan thing of looking in at the start, coming back one day when drunk, posting, wondering if that's creepy or not, and pretty much going about my non-chicagoland ilx business and leaving yous guys to your funtimes. It's nature at work. or something.)

(MTL is indeed freakin' rainy and grey. It's supposed to snow later this week though.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

DC is 80 degrees and glorious.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

See, but try "Halleluhwah" on for size. Twenty minutes of not noodling. Just fucking grooving.

See also, Captain Beefheart's "Tarotplane".

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty sure Tago Mago was the first one I heard -- borrowed from an old co-worker back in early 2001. Didn't really get into it but heard that Future Days would probably be more up my alley, considering I liked Stereolab. Heard that and it was a little better but still didn't wow me. I don't actually own either of them, though, so it's possible if I went back to them now I'd find something to appreciate.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, again, I'm not saying that "hippie" or "noodle" are pejorative terms -- it just wasn't really what I wanted out of Can as someone coming to the band as a Stereolab fan.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

i'm doing the non-chicagoan thing of looking in at the start, coming back one day when drunk, posting, wondering if that's creepy or not, and pretty much going about my non-chicagoland ilx business and leaving yous guys to your funtimes. It's nature at work. or something.

Analyzing too much. Minus one point. You're welcome here.

Didn't really get into it but heard that Future Days would probably be more up my alley, considering I liked Stereolab.

OTM. Future Days is my favorite, and my entry into Can.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - I am embarrassed to admit that when I heard this song the first thing I thought of was Happy Mondays' "Hallelujah" and how they were basically identical -- I had no idea that what's-his-name was ripping Can off so entirely. Then I did a cursory search to see if anyone mentioned Can and HM in the context of ripping-off and I came up surprisingly short. What's up with that?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I'm not embarrassed. Whatever. I enjoyed some Happy Mondays in my day.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Hallogallo" by Neu!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

it just wasn't really what I wanted out of Can as someone coming to the band as a Stereolab fan.

Dude, you started a thread with the word "Hallogallo" in the title.

Can >>> Neu!

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno about future days. title track and moonshake are k-great, but the other two are pretty boring

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

haha xpost extravaganza! John is way ahead of me.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

I've only heard the one with the can on the cover.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Was it me who started that thread? ;-)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe so, but I like Neu! plenty.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

I've only heard the one with the can on the cover.

Oh wait, Ege Baymaslksut35lh ... have I heard that? I think I have. Huh.

At first I thought you were talking about The Who Sell Out.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Was it me who started that thread? ;-)

heh. Check the spreadsheet.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

ive been in an amon duul/popol vuh phase for krautrock for the past couple months. maybe ill pull out the can this week!

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Why couldn't you have named the thread as I requested?

I'm eating tofu while listening to Meat is Murder. Pathetic, but completely coincidental.

whiskeytangofoxtrot (unclejessjess), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Btw, the best part of the Mr. Roger's episode I saw over lunch was when, after singing a jazz little ditty at the end, he took a "solo" on a toy trumpet and gave an "OH SHIT, THAT WAS HOT!" look towards the camera between every note.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

That massage was so good that I totally can't spell now.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

Is it four times better than, uh,

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Jenny - Sorry I missed you tonight! I was off at a coffeeshop doing some reading and writing. I told A. how good you found the massage - she's pretty stressed about school, so she was really glad to hear it.

Did you have music? Blonde Redhead?

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

re: house of beautiful women - the best moment was when I was moving in and had these two guys from Starving Art1sts moving my stuff up the stairs and all the gals were lounging around the living room and I'm seeing these moving guys' reaction and thinking awwwwyeah.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

i hate my life

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

Got massaged!

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

Good idea!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

(Get, I mean, but you got it!)

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

I may be banned around there, but you're hanging on by a thread.

gbx is clearly the most noise on the chicago thread, tho! he went on a bike adventure with ddb!

laurel might be giving him a run for his money, since she, like, hangs out with jon and ian and laura and stuff -- but she's also never heard steely dan, so.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 March 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

Tonight I had a couple in from SF for a bar mitzvah (the lady was a Jew, the guy Catholic, the jokes write themselves). They are in the "industry" and invited me to their restaurant in San Jose and gave me a strangely sincere invitation to stay at their condo in the Mission.

They told me some interesting facts about Oregon that I would like to run by our OR correspondent: the speed limit is 55 on Interstates and you are not allowed to pump your own gas? Based on these things they held OR in low esteem. 55 on the freeway???? Holy shit! I'd be in jail constantly.

whiskeytangofoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 17 March 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Eric----why has your roommate not responded to my email?

whiskeytangofoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 17 March 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

It's true that you're not allowed to pump your own gas.

I have no idea about the highway speed -- it seems like it's the same as every other relatively populated place. Certainly I've been in cars doing 70+. But I don't drive.

We also have no sales tax.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 17 March 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.suntimes.com/output/business/cst-fin-tall17.html

hooray! I hope this gets built.

Jeff. (Jeff), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

WTF is up with the gas thing? I avoided getting gas the whole time I was there because of this. I didn't notice the freeways being especially slow, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

I've always heard it was a make-work program. Although a quick google suggests that New Jersey (where you also can't pump your own gas) introduced the law in the 40s thinking it was best done by professionals.

I don't understand people who obsess over pumping their own gas. Someone explained once that some attendants "overfill" the tank, and this is bad. If that's true, then, OK, sure. But then again you could probably just ask for $20 worth or whatever. Some people also seem to really enjoy pumping gas. I'm not a driver, so I have never gotten used to it, but I always hate it when a driver asks me to pump the gas.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Why have I not gotten to sleep yet tonight? Er, this morning? Bah. Maybe I'll try now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, everybody! Where's Kenan? You can't pump your own gas in New Jersey, either, because full-service service is subsidized by the state somehow in an attempt to create jobs. I don't know the ins and outs of it but the most annoying effect is that gas stations are quite often NOT convenience stores like um Wesco (is that strictly a MI thing?) or TigerMart or whatever, because no one gets out of their cars. LIke, where I'm from if you need ice for the BBQ, you get it at the gas station. Not in NJ! Oh rats, XP.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, I think at best I am a Friend of Noize BUT I did hang out last night with Laura & Ian & ddb, and talked about bikes!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

i loved driving in portland, people were courteous and let me merge when entering the freeway. i also saw a horrific motorcycle accident driving back from seaside. wet pavement + twisty hilly road + motorcycle + ancient pine tree = dead guy.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yipes. I have to admit that I am irrationally terrified of car/motor vehicle accidents. Terrified.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Also, where's Kenan? I was worried last night.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I don't mind the concept of someone pumping my gas (so to speak), it just seems unnecessary and at the time I didn't know how it worked.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, now you have me worried too. What happened last night?

I would be all about someone else filling up my tank, but don't you have to tip them? Or do they just charge more for gas?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Neither, Sarah! Because the state pays for it, somehow -- otherwise, yes, full-service usually costs more.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, then. Fill 'er up!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Who wants to come see Love is All Sunday night at the bOttle? Nick has a ticket. I LOVE their cd, so I'm going to buy one too. Also, I'm going to get tix for the AlexWhite/Cococoma/subraces show on the 31st. I'm basically going on a shopping spree on the EB site.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I miss full service gas stations.

Jeff. (Jeff), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

It's Spring Break next week, so I am allowed to go out on Sunday night, HOWEVER, I will be at the Hungry Brain seeing Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love with Dan.

I would like for someone else to pump gas -- my mom went to full serve up until 1995 or so. Then I taught her how to do it. She would drive around until she found a full service station. There was one right next to the drive-thru, so you could get your beer/wine/whatever AND get a full tank of gas without ever stepping foot out of your car. That's good shit.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hey! Sharks is probably going to be playing a gig on April 8th, at Ronny's. We're thinking we'll get an engineer from Blam! to come down and do a live recording, so we have a demo. We need another band to fill out the bill, however, and we'd prefer not to play with the guys we've played with before (H1rud1n and Ru5ty P1p3s). Swell guys, all, but we'd like something new. Know anyone willing to play with an upstart band with only two gigs under its belt?

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Delaware also has no sales tax.

I used to work at a gas station when I was in college and I have shown many a New Jersyite how to pump her own gas. And a couple how to check oil. Thank god nobody ever asked me anything more complicated because I don't know shit about cars.

The nicest police officer I ever met was outside of Portland. He let me out of a speeding ticket (I PASSED him!!! Because he was in a Bronco and I'd never seen that) even though we had expired tags and no proof of insurance and looked like we should have been growing pot in the back seat. If there had been any room, what with the bongos and hippies all crammed back there.

xpost: Yay, Evan! Where is Ronny's?

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hee, "bongos and hippies". You people!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think you were in my dream last night, Jenny. I wish I could remember more, but Maddie woke me up by putting a cookie on my head.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ronny's is the Best Unknown Venue in the city. The only other bands I've heard of playing there are some Camp Gay bands that played a few years ago (before I lived here, mind). It's super-divey, and other than Sharks, the only people that hang out there are middle-aged neighborhood hispanic dudes. Most of the time its dead empty. Ronny spends most of his time watching cop shows. The "venue" part of it is decent-sized front room that rarely gets used for more than the occasional [INSERT WORD FOR MEXI GIRL 15TH B-DAY]. The beer is cheap, the pool is free, and it's just 2-3 blocks south of the California blue line stop!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

I have it on good authority that CA is making moves to make smoking illegal (SF restaurant owner and anti-smoke advocate). (I think I'll put this on FRM where it belongs...)

whiskeytangofoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Wait. Jordan. Was Maddie putting a cookie on your head part of the dream? Or did that really happen?

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, are there dominoes? The divey Mexican bar in Jersey City always had an old man at a card table, laying out dominoes. (XP re Ronny's)

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I'm going to get tix for the AlexWhite/Cococoma/subraces show on the 31st.

that show's gonna be a blast. the cococoma 7" should be available by then, bill dropped mine off wednesday night. can't wait for the submarine races lp, those songs are great pop songs.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Plus, when we played our first show there, for my friend's bday, Ronny and who I assume is his wife ROASTED A PIG and laid out a whole spread for us. GRATIS. He made more money that night than he does in an entire month of operation, I think.

Average Sat. = 5-6 people
That night= 60-70 people, drinking LOTS.

xp is Alex White as good as I've heard she is?

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Wait. Jordan. Was Maddie putting a cookie on your head part of the dream? Or did that really happen?

Oh, that really happened.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

"quinceanera" is your word GBX. (i still don't know how to place diacritical marks. stupid me)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

It's a lesson for everyone: Dream of me, get cookies.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

That's the one, alright.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)
