Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 13 March 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

i saw this dude on the train the other day with the worst shaving rash i've ever seen on his chest. if my chest was in such a state i'd be doing my shirts up a little higher than that.

Well, yeah, okay. Cyclists.

BOXXY BROWN, Monday, 13 March 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Unless you have a career in modelling in certain niche markets, or play in college water polo, um... yeah, what ESOJ said.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I imagine it's kind of hard to shave yr own upper-mid-back, or ass.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

you just have to reach around

Pretty fuckin' lame, except in athletics-necessitated situations.

I EARNED this hair. And me wife likes it. I'll be damned if I'm shaving/waxing it.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:28 (twenty years ago)

John Irving's book about the making of the movie of Cider House Rules has an amusing anecdote about the filming of The World According to Garp and hearing the screams coming from Robin Williams during his chest waxing session.

lovelace, are you insecure, or just thoughtful?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Not "totally gay" in the sense it seems to cut across orientation lines these days. But I will admit to being more baffled about why a gay guy would do this than why a straight/metro guy would. I mean, if there's one consistent mantra in gay personal ads, it's "No femme guys! If I wanted a girl I'd be straight. I want a REAL MAN." And then the same guy who wrote that will shave, pluck, manicure and perfume himself and expect potential dates to do the same. Doesn't make sense to me, but then, that could be said of the majority of things my gay bros do.

I'm going with thoughtful. From my own experience, I've found it's almost 50/50 wrt girls preferences towards hairy v shorn guys. One gf I had convinced me to shave my chest, and it wasn't really that bad. It revealed some muscle definition I never knew I had!

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

chesycat, the only gay guys who tend to enthusiastically remove all their body hair are those who are so totally built they can easily and absentmindedly squash anyone who says "er, waxing all over is pretty femme, mmkay?"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

that would be a good point if it were true! (ie, there are plenty of shaved wimpy twinks out there, along with plenty of hairy muscle bears who could have them for dinner).

cheshycat (chëshy f cat), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Well, while it isn't mutually exclusive per se, muscle building for strength is different than muscle building for mass. The latter is more likely the model (no pun intended) for people who want a career appearing in magazines, ads, or what not -- where you're likely to get the enthused self-waxers. The former are for people who want to become more physically agile, whether it's sports, doctor's orders, or what not. But this is SPLITTING HAIRS at this point. (sorry)

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

eighteen years pass...

have noticed more of this among dudes of all orientations recently. i trim everything, but not the full shave.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 10 October 2024 17:12 (one year ago)

I've managed to lose the preponderance of my body hair the natural way, by getting so old that my follicles have forgotten how to do their job. I kind of miss my eyebrows and eyelashes (nb: they still exist, but in a much-attenuated barely-there form.) otoh, I haven't sprouted large amounts of ear hair, so there's at least one common aging-person hair issue I haven't had to deal with. Yet.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 10 October 2024 17:28 (one year ago)

three weeks pass...

Have cartridge razors been mentioned in the “technological backwards steps” thread?
I kinda gave up on shaving my face in the last year or two, and started trimming my beard with hair clippers instead. I had always preferred to be clean shaven, but in order to shave at least every third or fourth day, I would reuse the same dull cartridge for months because of the expense. Idk if this is a failing of technology, or the impact of a duopoly that spends billions of dollars on marketing or what. But it was really difficult and painful, and I was still very unhappy with the way I looked most of the time.
I found that I didn’t mind the look of > 4-5 day stubble quite as much as I absolutely *hated* the 5 o’clock shadow and 2-3 day stubble. To shave every day (or *at minimum* every other day, which is what I would prefer) I would need to learn to use a safety razor so that I can throw away the blade after a few uses and replace it for pennies. The steep initial investment, fear of lacerating my face has discouraged me so far.

But yeah by a similar logic, I’d always trimmed everything but not the full shave. That is, I would want to be hairless ideally but the idea of prickly stubble on my chest, arms and legs etc bothered me more than the hair.

I have done a full shave recently and I really like the way it looks and feels! The stubble is actually nbd? I kinda don’t want to go back
OTOH I don’t really see myself maintaining it every few days vs. going at it with a trimmer every few weeks (or months)
Might just be an occasional indulgent self care thing going forward idk
But it’s nice

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 3 November 2024 18:56 (one year ago)

I’m booking my first full groin waxing this week. Very excited

beamish13, Sunday, 3 November 2024 19:02 (one year ago)

Deflatormouse, i trim everything every 3-4 days. after the initial month or so, it really doesn’t take long. i ao prefer it— i always loathed having a hairy chest and belly.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 3 November 2024 19:50 (one year ago)

Oh damn, trimming takes me a pretty long time, maybe more than an hour. The chest is quick and easy, but the arms and legs are a PITA. I honestly think shaving every 3-4 days would be a lot faster and easier than trimming that often (but find I can get away with not trimming for a few weeks, and that I really don’t see much difference midweek)

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 3 November 2024 20:27 (one year ago)

might just be different hair and body composition— i have very thin hair, not going bald but it’s the same as my mom’s — just incredibly thin, fine hair. so trimming it with a 3mm takes like ten minutes before a shower every 3-4 days

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 3 November 2024 20:55 (one year ago)

I'm with table. Shaving is not really an option. The one time I tried it on my chest it lasted a few days, then it started itching horribly, then it proved the perfect irritant for someone I met that week.

Nabozo, Monday, 4 November 2024 14:15 (one year ago)

I don't think this makes much difference if you are using an electric trimmer powerful enough to use on your head or face

The one time I tried it on my chest it lasted a few days, then it started itching horribly, then it proved the perfect irritant for someone I met that week.

^this is where it makes more of a difference and why I am never going anywhere near my junk with anything lower than a 1 guard

i meant in terms of appearance, fwiw

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 00:09 (one year ago)

I recently shaved my pubes. A friend has a hernia and we got discussing them; I was born with one just above my dick and had a massive scar. I wanted to see what the scar looked like these days, or if i was just imagining it being there. But its still there, about 5 inches long, under where my pubes have grown since i was 12 or 13. And for that, i'm now incredibly itchy from where spikey stubble on my balls rubs against my legs, and my penis looks weird the couple times i've seen it in the mirror. Not weird, I guess. It's just a different colour to the rest of my skin, which I didn't learn until now. It looks like i've got a dick and balls tan. I don't like it, and I can't wait for the pubes to grow back. Just to acknowledge a scar I didn't really ever need to see again.
