Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

i think tea tree oil is supposed to help.
or maybe that's for oily scalps.
i don't know.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

no, oil wouldn't help an oily scalp, now would it...

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I get winter flakes too! Dry Prairie whatever. Neutragena has an excellent shampoo that treats it and also is a nice shampoo.

ACTUALLY tea tree oil in many circumstances does exactly the opposite of what you'd assume oil to do (ie it is used very, very regularly in natural and semi-natural zit treatments). This has nothing to do with dandruff however, as I haven't got an idea about it.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

sweet, thanks Huk. I'm havin' a t/gel party ASAP.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

everyone is of course invited.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

can i make a slightly different suggestion?

rather than using the T-gel "daily" shampoo, use this stuff, the hardcore original:

http://pics.drugstore.com/prodimg/14489/200.jpg

but only use it once a week. for the rest of the time, alternate between days using water only, and days using a mild baby shampoo (eg johnsons).

my hairdresser recommended this when i was 15, and i've never looked back. as an added bonus, the T-gel gets rid of all the nasty clart built up by my dax hair wax habit.

i can't recommend this enough.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

i'll give it a go!

i usually only wash my hair once a week anyways! sometimes even less! perhaps this is the problem!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Beware that T-Gel doesn't work for everyone, i.e. it made my dandruff MUCH worse, and totally dried my hair out. Strangely enough, I switched to Loreal Elvive Anti-Dandruff, and that fixed the problem in about a week. I have no idea why the medicated one didn't work and a bog standard cosmetic anti-dandruff did, but there you go.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 11:16 (twenty years ago)

head and shoulders only work if you wash your hair more than once a month

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I have dry winter scalp, too, and none of the medicated stuff ever worked (same reaction to TGel as Colonel Poo) . Head & Shoulders has a new line of shampoos and one is for dry scalp. That took a couple of weeks of washing with it every day (and using a separate conditioner because I have lots and lots of hair) but now I am itch free and can wear black without worrying about what a scratch will do. Good luck on your search for a compatible shampoo.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Shave your head! I used to have a flaky scalp when I had hair, and now I don't. Or, go bald.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Scalpicin kinda works to ease teh itch

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

fuck all that, get Dr Bronners. I'm serious, they come in clear plastic bottles with all this crazy Chistian cult stuff written on the label, and are readily available in health food stores.

i swear by em because the lack of chemicals are real good for your skin, particularly in the winter when it gets dry. good for your scalp too.

T-Gel works if you have scalp psoriasis rather than dandruff. Which you could have if you get less sun and more stress in winter. It is hideously itchy and gives off big weird scaly flakes. H&S will do FUCK ALL for it but TGel works (or T-Sal even better) cos of the pine tar and the salicylate (asprin compound).

My scalp's a vertiable snowfest. Embarrasing when I go to the hairdressers :/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 17 March 2006 06:04 (twenty years ago)

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 13 February 2009 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

get a couple different types of shampoo w/ difft active ingredients and rotate them. selenium is well recommended.

goole, Friday, 13 February 2009 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 13 February 2009 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

Shave head and get out the nivea.

not_goodwin, Friday, 13 February 2009 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

it could be your radiators turning your apt. into the sahara - try getting a humidifier or turning the radiators off most of the time

"dry scalp > your balls dropping off because of the cold, tho"

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

1. Humidify
2. Wash hair less; use dry shampoo for the roots in between washings if you're one of those people who "has" to wash hair every day.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Get a brush w really stiff bristles and give your scalp a tough scraping I mean, brushing. This is really good for circulation, in addition to feeling amazing.

Do you use any kind of conditioner?

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

i think it's caused by city water because when i shower at my parents' house it goes away. how do you counteract that besides not showering?

Hans-Jörg Butt (harbl), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

does using dr. bronner's really work? i used to wash with it after going to hairdresser because i wanted to wash out the gunk + straightness but i didn't notice any reduction in dandruff. maybe if i did it like every day.

Hans-Jörg Butt (harbl), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

Damn psoriasis on my head is now in my EARS as well. I can hardly shampoo the inside of my ears with tgel :(

C.R.E.P.E (Trayce), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

four years pass...

surely there have been advances in the field of dry scalp since this thread was started lo those many years ago

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 2 January 2015 07:22 (eleven years ago)

Ketoconazole, seriously. A lot of dandruff, especially seborrheic dermatitis, is caused by an overgrowth of a certain kind of yeast. It also clears DHT out so you get some hair regrowth as well.

Jaq, Friday, 2 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)

yeah i tried a bunch of different dandruff shampoos and ketoconazole (as "nizoral") is the only one that works for me.

sleepingsignal, Friday, 2 January 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

pro tip will try thks

local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:20 (eleven years ago)

I use Regenepure DR because it doesn't have sulfates (which I react to).
