Hipster men and testosterone (or lack thereof)

So I was in several hipster ground zero bars in Williamsburg, B'lyn, this past weekend, and couldn't help but notice that I'd never been in so many bars where the sausage factor was so high but the testosterone level so low as to be almost sexless. What gives?

Can we have a decent hipsters thread, actually? (obv not this one) We haven't had one for ages!

Is there anything non-hipsters would like to know about hipsters, or vice versa?

I dislike when "testosterone" is used as a shorthand for "essence of man." Hormones are complex little fuckers and we don't know exactly their effect. It's a bit lazy and not entierly accurate. That said, the Dilberts where Wally was sweating little tadpoles of testosterone were funny.

Which candy bars do hipsters like?

It's like how I make a point to never wear vertically-striped button-down shirts and try my hardest to avoid wearing blue button-downed shirts, and never wear wristbands or hats or anything like that - I have certain people I can't stand and I make a POINT, almost obsessively so, to avoid dressing or acting like them in public, because I know I'll regret it ("ugh, I was THAT GUY last night, fucking A what's WRONG with me, UGH) so from an instrospective anthropology hobbyist POV, I'd say the effeminate fashion and behavior schtick of w'burg-style hipsters (there are other kinds) is sort of a way of expressing a pointed group antipathy with bridge-and-tunnel manhattan bar cloggers, with their happy-hour dress, excessive hair product and horribly tried and broken pick-up lines.

it's basically what The Warriors was about, but forty thousand times more boring.

one year passes...

Revive! Inspired by a particularly fascinating episode of This American Life.

couldn't help but notice that I'd never been in so many bars where the sausage factor was so high but the testosterone level so low as to be almost sexless

I honestly don't know how to parse this. Unless the men seemed very listless, I doubt very much that their testosterone was at play. Sexual behavior is social behavior, particularly in that setting. Also, there seems to be insufficient proof that testosterone equals aggression. What DOES seem to be born out again and again is that it leads to the desire for dominance in status, and the way that desire is expressed can be aggressive, yes, but can also be through antisocial behavior and rebellion. Your habitual shoplifter likely has a good bit of testosterone. It can also be expressed through diplomacy, even through care-giving -- through whatever means are required to increase social standing. Testosterone seems to reveal itself most directly, in men and in women, by allowing a certain boldness and certitude. The person with testosterone tends to be "the decider," even if only in small and meaningless ways, and tends to defend their position as such.

How do ILXors rank, I wonder...

kenan, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Apart from Barcade, I've seen plenty of people at all of those where the main helping-me-move issue would be less upper-body strength and more "getting everyone to remember show up at the same time and not hungover"

nabisco, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

I only went to Cokie's once and the thing I remember most was that the stripey paint job in the back room reminded me of a roller rink, and the bartender was stuck on NYT crossword and let me try. It was fun.

NB: I did not partake of the namesake product on that occasion or for many years following.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer Trash Bar to Luxx about three hundred times over.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

Remember those silver poles randomly spaced between the tables and the floor at Luxx? They inspired a bunch of sometimes-ILXors to posit an NYC club at which you had to fit between a set of bars to enter at the door. And the fuller the club got, the closer together the bars would be set.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Whaddya know? A thread with "hipster" in its title turns into a Williamsburg bar thread.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Perhaps that's why striped clothes are so popular with hipster girls and boys, to blend in with their natural surroundings among the poles at Luxx.

It had the worst sight lines ever and the most disgusting toilet-o-filth. It certainly had a lot of shiny mirrors, though -- a hipster's favorite view.

x-post Wow, a thread actually staying on message with the OP's topic!

felicity, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

I did the best I could to change the topic, really I did. I'm sorry, ILX.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

That would be cool, except I live on the 4th floor, and far enough north that I would wind up bombing Harlem.

nabisco, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

I don't go to upper east side bars, nabisco! Wait, I don't go to bars.

nabisco, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

nabisco, why are you trolling Wbug pick-up bars to find people to help you move? Asking someone for moving help must be the #1 gamekiller ever.

felicity, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

none of them would be of any use helping somebody move

I'm trying to decide how I feel about those being called pick-up bars. Not that they aren't, but surely they pale in comparison to the kinds of mid-Manhattan bars where people are explicitly trying to live out Sex and the City.

nabisco, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

pale in what comparison?

kenan, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

A certain (real-life) Chicagoan I know refers to Nick "n/a" and Sarah "McClusky" as hipsters. Not in a disparaging way, but it is still weird to hear them called that.

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

Umm, I guess she's KitCat, not McClusky now. Still, same person.

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

that's hilarious.
I remember the big hipster beef between nick and yancey back in the other half of the decade where nick was holding it down richmond style while fellow W&Mster Y had emigrated to the large apple and they had many differences of opinion on what was a valid life stance. then n+s moved to chicago and got married. a beef remake would be interesting for 2008 but none of em don't post hardly t'all no more

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

They do on the Chicago thread.

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

sarah posts all the time! And nick's around, he just keeps weird hours sometimes.

kenan, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

I can see why someone might lump them in w/ those I consider hipsters, and as I said to a mutual friend earlier, maybe if I got to know purported hipsters (Wicker-Parkians here), maybe the term would be meaningless and we would all just Get Along. Still, the things that might identify them as hipsters (and if you think about it, they're not hard to pinpoint) are not contrived, and also, those things are pretty limited.

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

let's take a moment to discuss what exactly a hipster zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

kenan, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

No thanks!

But you gotta admit that it's interesting to have that moniker applied to N & S! And likely to others in our peer group.

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh--"peer group"

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

masculinity in the Anglosphere is often associated with the "survival ethos" of the lower classes, so feminie posturing by men may very well be a sign that they are comfortably distant from that class. thus, the new "alpha male" is the gentle, feminine man.

burt_stanton, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

it's true. we're a generation of men raised by women.

latebloomer, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.
