I'M GETTING FAT (oh no!)

I'm still a slip of a thing, but I have noticed the emergence of a real gut ... and my weight is up 15 lbs. from a year ago. Must be bad 'cause I eat as much, and the same things, that i ate a year ago. Where will it all end? Am I going to end up like Jabba the Hut?

everything turns to shit once you hit the thirties, doesn't it?

Unfortunately yes. You need to get into the habit of eating less (no second helpings). I did this recently (not deliberately - it was connected with being unwell with a back problem...fetching food became a chore), and my weight has started going back down - reversing a long trend.

David Inglesfield, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i still could probably do with puttin a stone on.

gareth, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grrr. I think the problem is actually in your YOUTH Gareth. You were probably a fan of HUNGER STRIKERS whereas I was a fan of the fat child who had to eat the giant chocolate cake in Matilda. Eating = Winning! Also it equals the BLUBBER chiz chiz. I think too much of my LARD is actually from BOOZE whot horror. Maybe also the burgXoRs but *touch wood* I think my eeevil Double Cheeseburger Craving is coming to an end. That was a rough one.

Sarah, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm young and I'm getting fat. Although Ricky Ts warning last week prompted me to go the GIME. Oh the GYM. Of course.

I might go today again. yes although it was thursday when I went last and my limbs are still stiff and sore.

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Soreness (at first) is a good sign - of course, you probably already know that such aching means you're working muscle groups that haven't been worked in quite a while. Just don't overexert yourself and work out every day for 2 hours or something. Consistent, short bursts of activity should do the trick. I've been swooshing away the inches on my posterior with my Tony Little Gazelle contraption.

And do NOT get discouraged by the lack of immediate returns. Also, do NOT get overcocky from the small signs of progress - "Oh, look, I have the hint of a six-pack forming in my gelatinous belly; where's that Monte Cristo?"

This thread really deserves more attention.

Eat a healthy breakfast every day... kills that craving for greasy bacon & egg sandwiches at 11am. Booze is a difficult one. Wine seems to make one less tubby than beer.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what if yer breakfast is greasy bacon & egg sandwiches? godly creations, those are ...

and lasagna with loads of cheese and tomato sauce ... beef enchiladas buried under cheese ... i gotta cut out the cheese i think

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah so now my whole body feels like shit after yesterdays "work out".

Ronan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cut out cheese, or if you must eat it get the part skim stuff. cut down on carbs, although multigrain anything's preferable to wonder bread et al. drink water - 48 oz or so a day to start. cut down on booze, beer especially (that's been my downfall as of late). cut portion sizes - particularly difficult in america. if you can, substitute tempeh & tofu & other soy products for meat. fish is good, the less dressed the better; sushi is pretty key and quite filling and energizing.

If you feel this way, you could benefeit from eating a whole grapefruit a day, as that is a natural fat burner :)

Gale Deslongchamps, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
Actually, I love grapefruit juice. Drink it sometimes with breakfast.

Recent doctor visit - " You're fat and you need to use hand lotion. "

Thank you modern science. He also told me to stay away from the ghetto

Queen G, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i got sick and couldn't eat solid food for a little while and half my fat went away. it was kind of nice, except for the rest of the being sick.

three years pass...

I just recently won the weightloss competition at work but have since regained the kilos plus more, what with the introduction of profiteroles on the christmas menu (you can fit a whole one in your mouth and still continue walking normally, the same cannot be said about cake)and alongside the influx of mince pies into the supermarkets. also, college has ended, so I'm moving less. is there a way to lose this weight whilst reading/sleeping? my sister says 'no'.

Read mucky books / dream mucky dreams.

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

stop eating

Surmounter, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

profiteroles? Casseroles that come with your annual Christmas bonus profit? Pro-fit-roles, some kind of edible good that is ostensibly fitness promoting? Some kind of yum pastries? I've pretty much only heard of break 'n' bake cookies & Hamburger Helper so, like my ground beef, you're gonna have to help me with this one.

Abbott, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

Cream puffs filled with ice cream instead of whipped cream. And doused in chocolate.

lindseykai, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

get one of those vibrating things you put on your ass to make it smaller

Surmounter, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

i dont know i'm having an eating situation myself lately, i can't stop. it's messy. i don't think there's a solution, until you just stop (the messy part, not the eating), and figure out what works for you. but i'm 24 and my metabolism is off the hook, i really don't know how i'll feel about this in 10 years. downhill completely i suspect. terrifying.

Surmounter, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

i need to lose about 12 kilos. :-(((

stevienixed, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

Being fat isn't so bad as long as you actually keep somewhat active and aren't eating total shit.
I've always been pretty fat, but I've seen pictures of my Ukrainian forbears and in spite of being destitute peasants who couldn't afford butter they were all quite hefty. So I eat a lot of beets and sour cream and thresh wheat occasionally while wearing a babushka and I feel alright.

saudade, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus Stevie, you just made, carried, and gave birth to a baby. Don't be hard on yourself? And I bet you've got a smaller weight than me anyway (being 5' 9" does give me some nice weight gain/loss leeway tho).

Abbott, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

Scientists Say Just Standing Up May Be as Important as Exercise:

In most cases, exercise alone, according to a team of scientists at the University of Missouri, isn't enough to take off those added pounds. The problem, they say, is that all the stuff we've heard the last few years about weight control left one key factor out of the equation. When we sit, the researchers found, the enzymes that are responsible for burning fat just shut down.

Get a lectern, or putter around.

Kerm, Sunday, 16 December 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

That's pretty interesting. I gained about 60 lbs when I switched from retail to a desk job. I quit smoking at the same time so that compounded the problem. But I'm hardly ever upright these days. I'll have to give it a shot.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 16 December 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

despite me now being 21, my mother took a special walk across the supermarket to inform me about the calorie content in an individual mince pie, what with me just loading the trolley with 12. This was made all the worse by having to earlier abandon an H&M trouser purchase as 32" just wasn't going to happen. I think losing 3 kilos should do it, but now is harly the time of year in which to try.

o-ess, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

it's true standing up is rough.

i knw, i'm not really trying yet, i don't think. january, i can get thinner again.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

this one place, the gourmet tart company, can be held to account for my impending obesity.
I saw a woman getting a calliper test on the tv last night, I fear that they will soon be able to conduct such a test on me.

o-ess, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

Try being the kind of person that has to pace when making decisions. Make sure to wear sensible shoes.

Abbott, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

right! my pacing definitely helps.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Get a dog so you have to walk the dog.

Abbott, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I have a finch, which requires too little a movement. I once saw someone walking a rabbit, which has its virtues

o-ess, Thursday, 20 December 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

over the past four months i've lost around 25 pounds, thanks to going to the gym every day and doing 45 minutes of cardio, as well as weight training, and eating between 1200 and 1500 calories per day, including booze. i've pretty much cut saturated fat and processed food out of my diet. i've got another 10-15 pounds to go before i'll be really happy with my weight, but nevertheless, it's totally possible to lose weight and not feel like you're starving yourself or exercising 24 hours a day. i actually rather like running now.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Thursday, 20 December 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

how much is 25 pounds in stones?

darraghmac, Thursday, 20 December 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

Three large rocks a cobble and a pebble.

Ed, Thursday, 20 December 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

14 pounds in a stone

ken c, Thursday, 20 December 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

cheers, yeah i could do with losing 25 of those alright.

the fact that i'm too lazy to go look up how many pounds are in a stone doesn't bode well, i feel.

darraghmac, Thursday, 20 December 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

today's actually going well, I didn't have chocolate for breakfast. It is quite likely today wont mean another kilo gained.
