I spent a nice few days in Atlanta, but you need to see the rest of GA - Savannah, Macon, Jekyll Island and its neighbours and, yes, Athens. Also, go to South Carolina while you're there. The coastal towns in the southern part of the State are adorable.

I tried to like Atlanta, and some of the stuff around Little Five Points and whatever is OK, but...bleh. BUT, it is also the gay capital of the South (well, excluding Miami...and New Orleans...OK, it's the gay capital of the Mid-South), which is worth something.

The Ren-Fest is nearby in Fairburn. My favorite comedy shows there at the Tortuga Twins and Dead Bob. Atlanta has Agatha's Mystery Dinner Theater and Georgia Aquarium which are both expensive. There are these exhibits which I've heard are good. The World of Coca Cola is an obvious stop. The Plaza Theater is in the Virginia Highlands area which has good Thai restaurants. Also right in that area is a squishy downstaris venue called The Drunken Unicorn which happened to have cool J-Rock the day I went down there. You might want to check out the little hippie section of Atlanta called Little Five Points. The High Museum of Art is in Atlanta. Everyone goes to Stone Mountain Park for the laser show. You can bring a blanket and food for the lawn.
I might not be the best guy to ask about what clubs to go to but there's quite a few in a cluster in midtown like Opera club.
If you were serious about finding out what music shows you can go to in Atlanta I would just browse ticketmaster.

If you're an awesome-grocery and international foods nerd like I am, you'll want to check out the Buford Highway Farmers Market, the Dekalb Farmers Market and the Korean markets up in Duluth, especially H Mart. I probably make it to ATL a couple of times a year, and I make sure to bring a couple of coolers so I can take home interesting groceries that I can't get here.

the lack of preparation and such is kinda bizarre here cuz usually there's panic well in advance and by the point the snow or whatever actually comes in everybody's long since bought their milk, whiskey, and bread and got their snuggies and netflix on. i mean schools were closed a couple of weeks ago on account of 'it is very cold' - not even a threat of snow or ice.

The Georgia State Patrol found about 2,029 vehicles were left on metro Atlanta interstates after Tuesday’s snowstorm brought the area to a standstill.“One of the efforts that GDOT needs to get the roads cleared is to get these cars removed from the shoulders and we want to facilitate that in a very safe way,” Paulk-Buchanan said.Vehicles not picked up Thursday will more than likely be towed.

If you left your vehicle on an Atlanta interstate, you’ll need to head to one of two spots Thursday at 10 a.m. so various state agencies can get people back to their vehicles, a Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman said late Wednesday.People who left their vehicles on I-20 and I-285 west should report to the Westlake MARTA station (parking area), 80 Anderson Ave. SW, Atlanta. Those who left their vehicles on I-75, the top end of I-285 and the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85) should report to Mount Paran Church (parking area), 2055 Mount Paran Road, Atlanta.“We’re bringing the gas and we’re bringing the energy (to recharge dead batteries),” Natalie Dale, GDOT spokeswoman, told Channel 2 Action News. “You bring your keys and your driver’s license.”That’s welcome news to those who abandoned their vehicles, but were told earlier Wednesday not to go get them due to road conditions.“If people can wait, our suggestion would be to wait before getting vehicles,” Sgt. Greg Lyon with Atlanta police said Wednesday. “We’re not trying to impound vehicles, but there are situations where we’ve had to move vehicles.”http://www.ajc.com/news/news/atlanta-weather-abandoned-cars-may-be-moved-towed-/nc6ZW/

― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 April 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)
Assuming he'll have one or the other, I'd say Poncey-Highland or Midtown or Virginia Highlands would be his best options. West Midtown is in the process of getting gentrified (in spots), but there are still some places that might be affordable.
Home Park is right by GA Tech, but it's notorious for robbery.

― adam, Thursday, 24 April 2014 17:21 (eleven years ago)
"Techwood" really doesn't exist anymore. It was leveled in preparation for the '96 Olympics, and they threw up some mixed-income new apartments and called it Centennial Place. tbh, I don't know that area super well (driven through it a couple times on my way elsewhere), but it doesn't look frightening. I just wouldn't want to live there because of the traffic congestion.

Nah, they're coming. "A few years" is probably an accurate guess. The East Point/College Park/Hapeville area is undergoing a half-organic/half-planned revitalization that sooner or later developers will catch wind of. (Unfortunately, East Point seems to be lagging behind the other two, but we've got a new mayor who isn't shy about getting the work done to catch up.)

i'm trying to stay relatively walking distance from my gf's neighborhood (basically the spot where midtown, downtown and Old 4th Ward all come together, right between Gladys Knight's Chicken & Waffles and the Fox). it's been a bit of a chore. so far the best i've come up with is a basement apt in the Summerhill/ Peoplestown area, between Grant Park and Turner Field. unfortunately it's not open until middle July.
