In the red corner.... a delicate herbal infusion enjoyed by millions.

Seconds out. Round One.

Trevor, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tea tastes of nothing and can only be made to taste of crap things.

Bread tastes of nothing but is more versatile and can also have its form altered into toast. bread wins this one.

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tea has given its name to the light meal at which it is consumed, so wins hands down as a result. I can't imagine inviting anyone round for afternoon bread.

MarkH, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tea makes chocolate and cake taste better.

nickie, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One cannot prepare cucumber sandwiches for afternoon tea without bread though can one?

I am avoiding both this month and I have concluded bread is harder to avoid than tea. I have not had real tea since Jan 1, I miss it.

Emma, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tea + butter = no. bread + butter = yum. mind you cream crackers + butter = yum.

OK, try again. Alternatives to tea = other hot drink... hot choc = ace, coffee = blurgh. ALternatives to bread = snack substrate... crackers = yum, ryvita = yuuuuum.

Tea has no alternative = winner.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tea is silly. I sometimes think people would smoke carcinogenic leaves if they had been brought up watching others do it.

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This thread was inspired by watching "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" last night, when one of Mark Lamarr's guests suggested that bread is better than tea, resulting in Lamarr's passionate defence of tea. I'm still undecided, but then again I could murder a cuppa right now...

Trevor, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bread is closer to beer than tea, therefore bread wins.

RickyT, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

RickyT, if you were down the pub and someone offered to get a round in but meant a round of toast I don't think you'd be very impressed. Bread is really not very close to beer when it comes down to it.

Emma, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Flip a coin, that decides my answer, then flip again to decide my answer five minutes later. That said, I consume more bread than tea.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

on the other hand, about 2 or 3 quids worth of toast would be pretty impressive. that's got to be like a loaf's worth of toast. corr! what a stack.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bloody hell Emmma!!!! I would *LOVE* it!!!

Sarah, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tea wins over plain storebought bread for being interesting, but homemade bread wins over tea because nothing in the world is greater than homemade bread. Tea also makes good meals when dieting.

Maria, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pish and fie, Ms Hamilton. Beer is made from grain, water and yeast and so is bread. Tea is made from water and tea leaves. Therefore beer is more like bread than tea.

RickyT, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes but not enough like it to satisfy the thirsties. And tea is liquid like beer whereas bread is solid so where does that leave us eh?

Emma, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fish and pie, Mr T. A bucket full of grain, water and yeast is not an acceptable thing to come back with from the bar.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A ball of dough is not an acceptable thing to come back from the bakers with either.

RickyT, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if a picture paints a thousand words then why can't i paint you.

goeff, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jel, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You rebel.

We all know muffins are best with tea.

Maria, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Really? I prefer mine with butter and jam.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer my butter and jam with crumpet.

Trevor, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer my butter and jam with aforementioned homemade bread. Also good with tea.

Maria, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never had butter and jam with my tea.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this afternoon i had tea and muffins (with strawberry jam and butter)...and watched ready, steady cook. i must stop my rock'n'roll lifestyle.

jel, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Best of David Gates & Tea. I think not.
Baguettes and galettes and pains au chocolat ==> Bread wins (for now)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tea has rituals.Bread has toast.

ducklingmonster, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
how come random googler never revives threads like this. actually when was the last random googler revival anyway?

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"random googler revival" sounds like one of those Baptist church tent revivals in the American south...

"Welcome all ye Random Googlers to the Tenth Annual Smokey Mountain Chapter of the Random Googler Tent Revival, Praise tha Lawd!"
