1000+ posts in under a month? Way to waste time, people! OK, so to wash the unpleasant taste of discussing whether GwynJen qualify as "hot moms" (answer = ew no), we should redirect into...uh...hm...cherry blossoms! I think I'm going on Friday night, to avoid crowds and deadly UV radiation.

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Ohh...I didn't see this one. Fuck some cherry blossoms, DC hotels shoot up their rates 18x higher whenever someone says the word "cherry blossoms." I'M SORRY CRAPPY CITY THAT THIS IS ALL YOU GOT BUT FUCK'S SAKE.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

i've actually never been, so i figure it'll probably be lame and then i'll go drink beer instead. but i like the cap. area at night a whole lot more than during the day, so it's worth a go.

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

I will leave the hot moms discussion where it was.

I HIGHLY recommend going to see the Cherry Blossoms, Zack. Go once in the daytime and once at night - both times are really pretty. The view from the FDR Memorial accross the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson is pretty amazing with the trees in full bloom.

But, man you wanna talk about crowded? Jeesh.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

oh the blossoms are nice but yes, CROWDED. I had a v. bad experience the first time I went to see the blossoms, not because of the crowd but because of PEOPLE I WAS WITH, leave it at that. So Tom and I went back on a weekday and it was much better.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

I just found out one of the most awesome pieces of pop trivia EVER:

Re: Linda Blair

During the early 1980s she had a passionate relationship with singer Rick James, but left him when she could no longer handle his drug addiction.

Yes, I had a brain fart and had to wiki her name.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Wait so is she really an aerobix instructor in the Exorcist?

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

why would I read one chicago thread? I never even been there.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

So, check this out....CUA Law, the fine institution from which I will be graduating in just under two months, has decided to have Rep. Rick Renzi from AZ as our commencement speaker.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Renzi

The best quote I read in there is

Due to the various ethical charges that have been raised by Renzi's opponents, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington labeled Renzi one of the "13 most corrupt members of Congress"

I am so ready to get the fuck out of that asylum.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I will be doing an official, same-day taste test of Five Guys and In-n-Out. I will consider my results to be conclusive and irrefutable.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

i was in DC for a "protest" once, in college. i just walked around and looked at stuff. pretty nice!

i'm just here building bridges, folks.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

im going to chicago for the first time in early june, so ive been occasionally poking my head into their thread. head into thread! im rappin, im rappin, im rap-rap-rappin! rap-rap-rappedy-rap-rap-rap-rappin!

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

gbx, you're welcome to be here. This, like any other extension of our nation's capital, is national property to be enjoyed by all.

But stand on the right side of the fucking escalators!

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

If u want to build bridges you need to agree with us that this city is pretty crap though!!! We should arrange a Chicago-DC summit.

Also, Renzi is a DOUCHEBAG also commencement speaker buh?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

That picture is missing a couple of hotels. There's a Hilton Garden Inn I can see from my office window not on there. IT'S WORSE THAN YOU THOUGHT.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ally, I'm graduating from the same law school he graduated from, ergo, he's showing some alumnus pride.

He graduated in 2002. What the fuck? I have more legal experience than he does.

Ugh. This makes me realize that moving to CA is going to be a GREAT move in the end.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

earthquakes, dude

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I just thought it was pretty, like a park. I was only in the capitol area, though.

any summit would have to be in a neutral location. Cleveland?

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I want to find some thread for good time-wasting conversation again since the rest of iLx is pretty useless.

I have been to both Chicago and DC several times. Which thread do I take up?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Earthquakes, yes. And mudslides, bad traffic, smog, and orange people.

But damnit if Feb. in the high 70s didn't just make SENSE.

I would be in support of Cleveland. We could go to the Rock-N-Roll Hall three times, and then leave.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

here on the dc thread, we let you get a word in, edgewise.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

but only edgewise

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Sam, we seem to be attracting a few non-DCers lately so this is as good a place as any!

I dunno about Cleveland...what is there to do there? Does it indeed "rock"?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Cleveland = The Flats = DRINK AND BE ACCOSTED BY HOMELESS.

Also strippers if you go to the West Bank.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

dude cleveland totally rocks

Homeless Strippers?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Renzi spent $436,590 of his own money on the election, in addition to large donations from Mantech International executives, who were the largest single source of outside money for the campaign.

FUCKBAGS
you people think LM, GD, NG and Boeing are bad...

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever been to Cleveland.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

I might've driven through it, once. But I'm not really sure. I've been to Buffalo. That place was fairly crap, TBH.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I've been to Cleveland a bunch, actually. My brother and sister in law used to live there while he was a pilot for Continental.

I could see myself having a good couple of days there, but it just seems to be...kind of sedentary and dull. Beer, sports, food. Repeat.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Beer, sports, food. Repeat.
thats a pretty good life!

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I WAS GONNA SAY!

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

OK so I finished my fed & VA taxes but TurboTax online is trying to make me owe like $6000 to the District, which is the most constipated bullshit ever, so I skipped them for tomorrow. Jesus Christ.

Also I did actually fuck up my Systems Engineering midterm bigtime! Time to buckle down and make Super A Pluses on that group project and the final so I don't get a broomstick shoved through my pants by ex-NASA beardos. Life = Fun

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Happy birthday TOMBOT, you owe the govt both arms and also your balls"

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

I filed fed yesterday but still haven't filed MD or DC. I'll have a go at DC today but I'm filing an extension for MD because I need more time to figure out how NOT to owe those fuckers over two grand!

Meanwhile, Mr. Q keeps getting letters from MD demanding to know why he didn't file a 2001 MD tax return. That would be because HE DIDN'T LIVE OR WORK IN MD, NOT FOR A SINGLE DAY, IN 2001. We moved to Bethesda in the spring of 2002, fuckers, but nice try.

I will be SO ready for a beer(s) this evening!

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

Quincie -

A few years ago, they tried this shit with me too. I simply had to send a copy of my federal return from those years or, in one case, just called and asked what documentation was necessary. The Comptroller's Office of Maryland does this A LOT. In my case, I think it was b/c I used my folks' address as my home address b/c the mail in the MS Delta was suspect at best.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

If only Mr. Q actually had copies of his federal return from 2001! There is a reason why upon our marriage I assumed all tax-filing responsibility.

He'll just have to go through the pain of requesting a copy from the IRS, I suppose. But yeah, he probably filed 2001 with the Bethesda address, inviting MD to jump all over his ass!

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly. They won't proceed to a court action or anything until they are sure that you really do owe them money, so just be able to prove that you didn't earn any taxable income in MD that year, and you're good.

I would also suggest gathering up any information for other years that might cause them to get suspicious. They came after me two years in a row, and, on the second occurence, I just plopped my premaide packet into the mail and they backed the fuck off. I may have highly extended credit, but its all good! I pay my bills, yo!

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

dude I hate this city so much.
I put in that basically 80% of my income this year was already taxed by VA and they're still fucking me for $2000, I guess because I'm filing as resident of DC vs. a resident of VA. They've really designed this to fuck people who move into the city from another state, AFAICT. you don't get the double-taxed income subtracted from your DC taxable income total, you just get a credit for the taxes you paid to the other state. Which in this case just means I'm still out some atrocious amount of money paid in taxes this year but what I expect from selling a bunch of mutual fund shares to pay off debt.
Fuck all.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

(this is why people who give a shit about their $$$ and not much else ALL live in VA)

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

OK Tom so should I be doing my DC taxes before my MD taxes or vice-versa? Note that I am asking this at noon the day both are due.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Do MD first and then whatever they tax you, DC will give you a credit for it. Though you're still a DC resident so just go ahead and break all your fingers with a hammer. I have no idea how in the world mookie did it with his $5 REFUND from this joint.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

I would still feel a lot better if you went ahead and just finished off that ill-advised mutual fund stock once and for all. I saw your portfolio when trying to figure out wtf you did last year last night, it's going south anyway, and we ain't exactly making enough money to offset the tax burden of every liquidating that money. And having money we can't ever use without massive tax burden is asinine. Rather get rid of it now and then put it in yr money market and then use it to pay off if they knock you again next year (which they might not since you won't be taxed in two places for the same withdrawal).

Or tell your mom to take it, dude, since her name's still on the acct. Her fucking problem.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Pffft. I done filed, received my VA refund and spent it all before March. What's important here is that if somebody doesn't finish the goddamned TR Bridge resurfacing soon, we're gonna have a major me+clock tower+sniper rifle incident on our hands.

PS All this talk of money markets and mutual funds and portfolios and liquidating frightens and confuses me. Checking account + 401(k) + student loan debt + overpriced NoVA apartment = I R POOR.

phil d. (Phil D.), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

at least DC didn't tax me for my jury duty money!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha Maryland I showed YOU, didn't I? NOW WHO OWES TWO GRAND OH YEAH YOU DO!!!

Well that was a pleasant surprise. Now on to DC, who will no doubt kick my ass.

I'm never moving again, by the way. This two state thing is really, really aggravating.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Your pain is my pain. I had to file in three states this year. I got HAMMERED. This is the only place I've ever lived where I have to pay "pet rent" and COUNTY taxes.

ng-unit, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I also had to file in 3 states this year but thankfully made no money so who cares. You guys should all thank god that none of you:

1) lived in AZ for first few months
2) moved to Jersey but worked in NYC
3) then moved to NYC
4) then had your parents "forget" to not claim you as a dependent on their taxes, forcing you to file as a dependent to not get yr ass saaacked at a later date

all in one year. That was the only year in my entire life I've not gotten a really big refund actually.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

last year was the first year I saw a big refund of any sort
mostly because when I was in the military and my permanent address was in ALABAMA the comptrollers of ALABAMA apparently felt that exactly what the military was withholding was what I owed them and any income from interest on my obsolete trustafarian shit was taxorama delight for their plunder

dude I am in the worst mood today over this crap I swear

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm so against the idea of even pretending to do work this afternoon I been reading wikipedia articles about HARRY POTTER

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I to this day am baffled by the NYC tax system, I mean you pay tax to the state and then special taxes to the city even if you don't actually live in NYC. The city one I get but wtf does Buffalo need some poor bastard in CT's $$$ for? Other than the fact that anyone who lives in CT and works in NYC is an ass to begin with.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm on hold with the DC tax hotline because apparently I am too stupid to figure out this stupid out-of-state income tax credit. I'm stuck on question 'b' of Calculation K. I'm very close to just making up a number.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

how much did you pay to maryland, total, minus the refund?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

I mean you better not have done gone found the secret loophole I missed thanks to stupid fucking TurboTax but that's what I had to do.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

you had me at wikipedia articles about HARRY POTTER

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

MD wanted 1545 for my five months there and I WAY overpaid through paycheck witholdings, so I'm due a fat refund. What I can't figure out is my "income subject to income tax in other states and received while a resident of DC." I mean I got to subtract out my 7 months of MD income received while I was a DC resident earlier in the process, so my adjust MD income reflected the part-time resident thing, so it doesn't seem to make sense that I would get to do it again. I realize I'm not making any sense. The DC hold music is horrible Kenny G shit. Argh.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

severus snape is apparently very good at occlumency and there is a strong theme of bigotry vs. tolerance throughout the series

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

tolerance is some muggle bullshit

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Also Tom explain me: "DC taxpayers may claim credit for income tax paid to a state if the income taxed by that state is derived from that state and is of a kind taxed by DC." I mean you paid VA taxes but your income is "derived" from MD (where LM is incorporated), right? So do you really get to take that credit? I DON'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND FUCK YOU DC GET ONE (1) COMPETENT TECHNICAL WRITER!

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

someone recently told my gf wife that she looked like the girl from harry potter--henrietta or something? neither of us knew what to make of this.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

seriously turbotax, you get screwed completely but that's likely to happen anyway and you don't have to think very hard

whatever total you paid to maryland for taxes, that total gets plugged in as a credit for DC.

ignore random clauses intended to prevent people from claiming credits for taxes paid to states on types of income that only certain other actual States tax (though show me a kind of income that DC doesn't tax and I will certainment put my full will into making only that kind)

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think it matters where your employer is incorporated (or we'd all be paying delaware taxes), just where you live. therefore, claim that bitch.

xp otm

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

I also had to file in 3 states this year but thankfully made no money so who cares.

me too. it was a pain, I made so little I should've been able to efile for free, but then had a 1099 that made TurboTax tell me I had to upgrade to deluxe version ($39.95) to file & too late to do it any other way. however, I immediately sent them a detailed complaint message b/c the deluxe thing was NO help on filling out my 1099 (FIX your SOFTWARE please) and they promptly agreed to refund my money. sweet.

show me a kind of income that DC doesn't tax

http://www.vintagevantage.com/uploads/crack_2.jpg

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, if you complain about their fucked up program that doesn't even work properly on Firefox (uh hello drop down menus that don't work, wtf) you get a refund??? Snap!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is up with being charged to e-file? why do i have to pay to make it easier for the irs?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah and the cost goes up every year. What's lame is they advertise ONLY $9.99!!! and then when you sign in it's like "Oh but actually YOU suck and need our $50 version" and you're like, I just have a fucking W2 and a couple interest statements, you jackass, I'd rather MAKE my own program. Whatever, as long as it means I don't have to go to the post office ever.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

no what's lame is finding out AFTER you've already done 2/3rds of the process that your bank offers you a 20% discount on turbotax fees but you have to go through their partnership site to get it.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

bittorrent, yo

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, my bank does the discount thing too and I tried logging out and logging back in via bank site to get that, and it didn't work. at which point I was pissed off sufficiently to demand a refund for the $39.95 'deluxe' federal filing because their shitty software didn't work.

I am considering writing them again asking for the 15% off from my bank to apply to the state filing fees.

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

You might have to find the 'contact us' link via Intuit.com and not Turbotax itself, they hide it pretty well. ya know it can't hurt to complain and ask for a refund, I was just really really specific about how the software didn't work & thus I couldn't use the popup boxes that should give the info I needed for the 1099 form, and voila, refund. I don't feel like I'm scamming here actually, it's such BS that they made me upgrade mid-return and then the software didn't freaking WORK for the very forms which allegedly required an upgrade. What am I paying you for? Fix your software before tax day. sheesh

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, finally done. Tom, I finally tried to stop reading too much into Calculation K and when I finished the worksheet it was just like you said: what I owed MD I just flat out subtracted from what I owed DC. Why couldn't they have just come out and SAID THAT (obv. this is one of the things you get with TurboTax--decent communication skills). So now DC owes me! But instead of being happy that everyone and their mother owes me money I feel very wary that I have just fucked up my filings and it will all come back to haunt me.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah dude, either you have hella withholdings or you've figured out the zone or something, because I'd be a little freaked too by that after everyone else's tales of nightmare.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Calculation K sounds like a band I'd go out of my way to avoid
