ILX's two favourite sons together at last.

I just thought this was worthy of note. In the latest issue of Bizarre magazine, available from all good newsagents (and some bad ones as well lol amirite?), a quick skip to page 48 will confront you with my three page article on ever-popular white supremacist lesbian sun-goddess worshippers and modern culture-phobes the Aristasians (recently brought up on ILX by Momus whilst he was losing an argument).

That alone wouldn't be worthy of a thread. However, if one turns to page 113, they can read a short interview with the horror actor Robert "Freddy" Englund, conducted by a hot up-and-coming journalist by the name of Calum Waddell. It's nice to know he's still gettin' paid.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

"brought up on ILX by Momus whilst he was losing an argument"

That really narrows it down.

Did you write for Bizarre at all when it was edited by its creator FJ, Dom? She's one of my best and oldest friends.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Much as I'd like to, I'd be embarrassed to be seen buying Bizarre... especially if Diane Abbott was there

Dadaismus Is A Very Magic Fellow (Dada), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Does she stalk you or something?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Well she was in Waitrose the last time I was forced to shop in there - pushing a trolley with a copy of, you guessed it, the Daily Mail in it

Dadaismus Is A Very Magic Fellow (Dada), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe she needed it for Research Purposes.

(Surely there must be other Bizarre retailers near you? Ones that Ms Abbott doesn't shop in?)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

you forgot to mention the review of mar155a m3rch4n7 in page 88 dom!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Dadaismus Is A Very Magic Fellow (Dada), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly because magazines are better when they're edited by friends of Martin!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Bring back Fantasy Zone!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Right, now I'm off to track it down.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

i used to write quite a lot of stuff for bizarre, in fact i was the mag's first film editor. there were lots of interesting hacks doing stuff for it - ken hollings, jack stevenson, mark pilkington, cathi unsworth, edwin pouncey etc. the big prob was that pretty much every lads mag eventually started doingl the gross-out stuff - bizarre's main usp and certainly its most popular feature - making those kind of pics rarer and more expensive, until of course you cld get all of em for free on the interweb. circulation was steady - round abt 90,000 - but even gd cover mounts etc. didn't significantly increase sales - any changes to content/style etc. just pissed off the incredibly loyal core audience of goths + pervs. as it was the content had to be toned down once it got circulation in some supermarkets.

john brown publishing flogged off the mag (along w/ Viz and Fortean Times) to IFG, James Brown's company, abt 3-4 years ago, for a VERY gd price. the whole thing quickly went to shit - staff left, writers went elsewhere, etc. at one point andy capper, a mate of brown's, was gonna be the new editor until he decided to go to vice uk instead (another momus connection)

i'm saddened to hear that calum is now writing for bizarre, but not totally surprised - it's certainly a step up from the dark side mag and last time i looked bizarre was even more of a loaded clone w/ extra cock piercing

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Bizarre was just Loaded for goths all along?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

a loaded clone w/ extra cock piercing

Now it has an extra cock writing.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 31 March 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Calum will end up richer than any of us.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 31 March 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

teh_kit!!1 has 5 friends (g-kit), Friday, 31 March 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

mattdc you are partially right, but back in the day Bizarre was one of those mags where you COULD smuggle in interesting ideas/ppl just so long as you had the required number of amputations/porn stars/whatever - the music page, for example, was consistently OUT and eclectic and not v. gothy at all

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 31 March 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

KEN C!

Mind you, she would have gone ballistic!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I believe Miss AMP used to write for them back when it was still good. There is no publication on earth that the Shimuras have not touched in some way. Heh.
