This is totally an April Fool's joke, right?

In the new song, Martin rails at how recent events have "smashed my illusions about Tony Blair/His shoes, his suits, his terrible hair." In a subtle nod to Mr Cameron's reputation for voguish footwear he sings: "It was the converse trainers that did it for me/I got them in orange, wait till you see"

gooblar (gooblar), Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

"I invited him round to explain himself to me and a group of like-minded friends - about how he was going to make poverty history and all that.

"But he never turned up. Madonna walked out, and Stella [McCartney] was totally gutted."

he'll be used by cameron and then "dave" won't answer his calls when chris wants to discuss options for replacing the trident submarine.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 2 April 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

yeh this was their April Fool joke as mentioned on bbc website (along with other papers AF jokes).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 2 April 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

I thot that was quite fun-ruining of the BBC, to do it on April 1st itself rather than waiting until the 2nd to point the jokes out.

permanent revolution (cis), Sunday, 2 April 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

i would've done it on March 31st ;)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 2 April 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

see the article's "author"

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 2 April 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone download the MP3 of "Talk to david" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 2 April 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

no: what was it? a recording of al4n rusbridgr saying: "you dick?"

I thot that was quite fun-ruining of the BBC, to do it on April 1st itself rather than waiting until the 2nd to point the jokes out.

er: the guardian also pointed out that it was an april fool, right at the end of the feature about great april-fool jokes.

although, really: olaf priol? it was a bit bloody obvious. as was their other one, in the "money" section, about "lip and pin".

Does yesterday's Norman Johnson count as April fool, too? Neither are funny, anyway.

The Onion >>>> The old "hey look down, ha ha, I've flicked your nose" gag >>>>> Guardian April Fool

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

i can't bear to read norman johnson, so luckily i don't know ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeh: the BMW advert stuck with tradition by being piss-poor too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

The MP3 was still there, last time I looked.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 3 April 2006 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

The back page of the Gurdian on Saturday also had one from Nectar. Full page advert saying how you could register your nectar points by scanning your credit card with your mouse. Laptop users could scan it using their trackpad. No indication at all it was an April fool though I presume if you went to their website it did.

According to yesterday's Observer, the Labour Press Office dutifully clipped the Guardian piece and faxed it off to ministers for urgent attention.

Please tell me that Chris Martin supporting the Tories was a spoof. Disillusionment with Labour is bad enough, but to lose respect for Coldplay and their music would exacerbate the situation.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

Given the growth of eco-tourism in San Serriffe (Archive, April 1) I am surprised that you did not mention the large number of Pica pica san serriffa, an indigenous sub-species discovered in the highlands and named for the President by his cousin Oddie Pica, the eminent ornithologist.

hey there, guardian letter-writers. why waste valuable time at the keyboard when you could be stuffing your face with polenta and being hypocritical about things? a simple "dear the guardian: hello, i am an unfunny wanker, kthxbye" would have sufficed there.

i mean, really. san seriffe might have been funny back in 1904, but IT'S NOT ANY MORE. SO SHUT THE FUCK UP, OKAY?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

how many april fools things were there in the grauniad?

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

But how many Pica pica san serriffa can you fit in a 35mm film canister etc etc....

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

how many april fools things were there in the grauniad?

ones i saw:

the chris martin thing (which i thought was quite good, although i didn't realise the indy had done a similar thing last year)

the unfunny lip-and-pin thing in the money section

the BMW ad for speed cameras that knack you for going too slowly

the thing on the back page i missed completely

think that's it.

what did other papers, eg the indy, do?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

so this sans serif thing isn't a...

oh fuck it!

tbh i woulpdn't bat an eye if cold-play *did* go tory.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I would probably neither notice nor care.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

when i first saw the headline, before i realised it was a spoof, i actually said to mrs F: "oh good, another reason to hate that fucker martin."

i really do need to work on my bitterness issues.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

"i actually said to mrs F: "oh good, another reason to hate that fucker martin."

I suspect you weren't the only one. In fact I know you weren't, as I did exactly the same thing.

In fact, I reckon the only people who didn't react in that way were the two people who wrote letters to the Guardian about how ashamed they were.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

"Son of Tory MP backs Tories" shock horror April Fool probe.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

A good lie = probably true to some extent anyway.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Does that mean we can get our "True or Pete" points back, then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

In fact I know you weren't, as I did exactly the same thing

oh, that was you, was it? mrs F was wondering.

:)
