“The United Kingdom ... shares with the rest of the world an increased threat of terrorist incidents of international origin.” Further down, the advisory reads: “Americans are reminded to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and to exercise caution.”

Yup. While visiting the World Trade Centre (as a great many of us have) was a totally risk free endeavour.

I wonder if any British school kids died in 9/11...

The district has an unofficial policy of rejecting all international student trips for safety reasons.

Maybe if Britain asks America if they can buy some of their SPECIAL AMERICAN TRAINS THAT DON'T BLOW UP, this could have a happy ending!

Alas, no

One of the posts on the discussion board makes the fairly cojent point that they live in Florida => driving to and from the airport will be the most dangerous thing they could have done.

The News-Press message board makes amusing reading, especially the person who objects to someone saying Britain has always been America's strongest ally by pointing out that they fought a war of independence to escape British oppression.

From the WHO's World Report on Violence and Health:
Apart from the United States of America, where the rate stands at 11.0 per 100 000, most of the countries with youth homicide rates above 10.0 per 100 000 are either developing countries or those experiencing rapid social and economic changes.
The countries with low rates of youth homicide tend to be in Western Europe – for example, France (0.6 per 100 000), Germany (0.8 per 100 000), and the United Kingdom (0.9 per 100 000) – or in Asia, such as Japan (0.4 per 100 000).

And this company's site is truly disturbing (Not just in a voyeuristic, thank-fuck-I-didn't-have-to-raise-my-daughter-over-there way. It's scary that a profitable market should even exist for a company like this.)

So, fuck the marching band. If Browder is really concerned for schoolkids' safety he should be arranging to ship the entire Lee County school population over here ASAP.

March 29, 2006: Stoughton, MA
A 17-year-old male was arrested after police stopped his car in a middle school parking lot, next to a high school, around 1:00pm and found gunpowder and other bomb-making materials in the car.

It's stupid. it's not rational. but are they the first people ever to do a stupid irrational thing?

i remember in 2003, when the iraq war was about to start - good times eh? - working in a pub frequented by the Wells Cathedral Choir in Somerset. they were due to fly to the US for a tour but it was called off because of similar "safety fears".

I came though cos plane tickets were cheapio as a result.
