On a forum full of journalists, this must be a pretty banal announcement, but I just had my first article published in the LA Times

Hardly banal at all -- but that said, obviously this wasn't your idea of a debut.

2+2=5

they gottu, Monday, 3 April 2006 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you can say that again.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

lame

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

eh

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

this is cold comfort but the punishment doesn't fit the crime. however your response was dignified and mature. mine isn't: fuck the riaa and all music cops. can't believe the FBI wastes our taxes on this. and fwiw i've never file-shared or illegally downloaded.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Was this article part of your sentencing?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

No, it wasn't. Sentencing is next month.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

how likely is prison looking?

(btw: good luck, dude)

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

damn that's a harrowing story.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Prison is looking for me to be pretty unlikely but still a possibility. I don't want to jinx it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

You have to figure the public apology is going to count for something, no? Especially if you offer to donate any fee you might have got for the article to a charity.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

i really admire the way you've handled all this, mickey: i know that might not mean much in the general scheme of things, but your story's been an eye-opener to me and ... yeh, like m coleman says, "dignity" is the word. best of luck for next month.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

I haven't gotten any fee from the article. I never really raised the issue of pay with them. Will they pay me? I still haven't signed the legal papers for them to publish it or anything.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Grimly Fiendish, thank you, seriously. It does mean something to me. I wouldn't have ever mentioned this whole incident on ILX or anywhere else online if I didn't want others to know. And the whole time I've had cowardly trolls, sometimes anonymous, sometimes not, doubt me the entire way, so comments like yours mean a lot to me. I wonder exactly what it's going to take before they believe me.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Contact them saying you want the payment to go to charity and then tell them it's Amnesty.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

how come I thought Mickey was british

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

latebloomer: someone's been drinking my youth! (latebloomer), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I doubt it, but how can I know?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Er, there's no excuse for the LAT not to pay you.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

ahaha i hope all your ilx threads end up in court

+++++, Monday, 3 April 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

latebloomer: someone's been drinking my youth! (latebloomer), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow, it doesn't even sound like you were that big of a deal in your warez/piracy/wahtever group.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

an essay about piracy

What next, lines?

Still, this seems about the right level of punishment for such a minor crime.

Good luck.

-- Still suspicious of him being an RIAA/MPAA astroturfer (dr_...) (webmail), April 3rd, 2006. (ex machina)

busted! a conspiracy involving the FBI, RIAA, Reuters newswire, Los Angeles Times editorial board, and a guy with a belly button ring. the perfect scam.
