What are your experiences of using www.pandora.com? Some of its suggestions are decidedly bogus, but it hits the spot more often than it doesn't.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

i've used it a few times - it was good actually! i think i actually like it when i throws up the bogus stuff. i started on a romanian pop song once and it ended up giving me some j-pop and then madonna. it was a great learning experience.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the bogus stuff has its charms, and you do ask yourself about the approach taken by the 'genome technology', but I felt in one instance that it hadn't really grasped the aspect of the music that I was after. I wonder if they could arrange to come round to my house and we'd have a proper chat about what i'm looking for.

yeah, when i clicked on the "why have we chosen this" thing it tells me a load of things that i didn't necessarily care for (e.g. mild rhythmic syncopation) and other things that i'd have liked to have included (e.g. lyrics! happy or sad! does it have a banging chorus!!)

but still it is fun

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

when i told them i liked masta ace it played paul barman >:(

++++, Monday, 3 April 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

So, what's the verdict, ++++? Did you think the selections were any good (not being all that knowledgeable on that form of music, myself)?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

The sound quality's really good compared to the free version of Launch.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Launch?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

http://launch.yahoo.com/

Similar service that creates a radio station based on your preferences. I've been impressed by the libraries on both Launch and Pandora - finally get to hear out-of-print Kendra Smith, lots of ECM artists, etc.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, eazy.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

You've got to toss in lots of artists to get something good going -- I started out with Mission of Burma and got some godawful modern emo shit, but I have learned it nicely since.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:56 (twenty years ago)

Fair point, Colin. I stuck in High Llamas and the first thing I got was Phil Collins.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 08:38 (twenty years ago)

It's never heard of some fairly well-known British bands, and has offered me some American ones that are utterly unknown over here in the UK.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Having spent a fair amount of time with this today, I think it's fun, but it keeps trying to foist crap emo and 80s hair rock on me for reasons I can only begin to fathom. It's also a little annoying that it doesn't skip around genres at all -- I'll get a five song soul music set and then a five song death metal set. That's kind of a bummer.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I keyed in Augustus Pablo, and it started in a fairly obvious way, only to branch out into Tortoise and one or two other spacey things, before reverting to the reggae/dub theme.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

It took me from Mogwai to Kinski and made me buy a record.

I once entered The Cult and all I got was a load of dodgy hair met... oh wait.

I mostly like Pandora but I hate the phrase "Music Genome Project"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and all paths lead to Sebadoh, it would seem.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

nah its cool but im familiar w/ 99% of what it plays already so for real its just like real radio, aside from wack nerd rap i skip THUMBS DOWN the only new shit it actually put me up on was blue scholars who are pretty dope on a true skooly good-for-you steez

++++, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

it did remind me how much i love 'gettin jiggy wit it' tho - classic song

++++, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i put in some random song that i liked and it churned back later on a sundays tune that i liked. so it seems at least it likes like with like, like.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

*excelsiors*

++++, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

lolz I like how putting in M.I.A. gives every possible remix of "Calabria" in existence, including a reggae version wholly unlike every other mix out there.

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 August 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

wtf how is Vanilla Ice's "O.K.S." anything like M.I.A.

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

Fair point, Colin. I stuck in High Llamas and the first thing I got was Phil Collins.

That. is. awesome.

Abbott, Thursday, 14 August 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

It kills me that I can't get this outside of the US. Last.fm isn't quite the same for good radio (too predictable), though it is improving fast. For me, the key was the function allowing the user to randomise their stations.

moley, Thursday, 14 August 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

Install hotspot shield and you can use it outside the US, moley. (Also works for Hulu!)

Stevie T, Thursday, 14 August 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks Stevie! I'[m doing it now.

moley, Thursday, 14 August 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

listening to this now. The Wipers Radio Station: Why this song? "We're playing this track because it features basic rock song structures, mild rhythmic syncopation, extensive vamping, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation and many other similarities identified in the Music Genome Project." Also how do the dutch guys get it like a YEAR before yanks?

So that IPO didn't exactly go as planned.

"“In our estimation, Pandora is just not an attractive way to play. What's their competitive advantage? They don't have one,” said Rick Summer, an analyst for Chicago-based investment research company Morningstar, adding that he expects shares to tumble to $6.00."

This is a dumb comment. Do you listen to music or just skim through it, Rick Summer?

mike and the quantum mechanics (Hurting 2), Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

I mean yeah, the IPO was probably overpriced. But Pandora is way better than any other music streaming service I've tried. I mean actually I haven't seen anything that even provides a worthwhile alternative.

mike and the quantum mechanics (Hurting 2), Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

I really like Pandora, definitely, but I do think there is some point about how they really don't have a firm plan for generating revenue into the future. If Spotify successfully launches in the U.S. later this year and catches on like it has everywhere else, it may be difficult to see a long-lasting future for them.

So this is what my married friend's ad supported pandora page looks like today:
